Didn´t see the glasses of the E guy that I thought was Willem Dafoe but is Philip S. Hoffman and it really looks like Catherine Keener, it´s Synecdoche NY. And people look very confident in B Ricci. I haven´t seen Penelope, is it good?
A is Nell I love that film! I thought C was going to be a recent movie, it looks like a frame from Control, but the brunette is very Anne Bancroft-ish.

How great is Jodie Foster in Nell? Oscar number three, IMO.
Fun post. It took me a while for the first one. I haven't seen that movie is years!
Kris -- me neither. It almost sucked me back in while looking for this image.
Cal -- It seems like her sincerity -- the character being totally without guile -- is too much for people and the discomfort makes the performance mockable i think for so many people but i remember it as being terrific.
but i can't stand by that first Oscar so i say Jodie only gets two ;)
On Foster: Really, Nat? Silence may be a great movie, but Foster wasn't a "Best Performer of the Year" in it. Sarandon would have been a better pick. In '88: I think Close would have been the pick. In '94: Judy Davis in The Ref. It may not be trying to open your tearducts like Foster's Nell, but she's a convincingly written and exquisitely delivered human being. Plus, with Thurman and Wiest on the table, she couldn't take it for Husbands and Wives.
I think she deserved her two Oscars and I can't see why people complain about Glenn Close losing the Oscar for Dangerous Liaisons and not for Fatal Attraction, since her turn as Alex is far superior. I think she clearly misses the point of Mme. de Merteeill. Too many ironic looks, too many breasts, too many overselling the disdain of the lines. Glenn Close is better when she goes emotion full throttle. When she tries to be bitchy, she becomes a subpar Helen Sinclair. Advice: be carnal, not a diva.
PS: I'd love more people people to see Jeanne Moreau FANTASTIC turn as Mme. de Merteiull. The movie is not as good as Frears', but that's what I call a great actress.
cal -- have you seen Annette Bening's Merteuil. VERY different take on the character than Close's but she's fab.
volvagia oh don't get me wrong. i wanted Sarandon to win in 1991. I just mean that it's very hard to gripe about Jodie winning for silence she's utterly captivating in it... but i don't count The Accused among her best work. I think she's better in both Nell and Taxi Driver. Much better.
and P.S. I love Judy Davis in "The Ref" with muchness. much love. love plus love. ;)
Bening is not my cup of tea (same problems of Close) but she was very inspired in Valmont, understating the evil, making it discreet, but still very charming. Merteill is not a Bette Davis routine, as Close sells it. It's more like a Anne Baxter thing.
Too bad Valmont is a mess. Meg Tilly vs Michelle Pfeiffer? Come on.
Only correct with A. Beautiful movie.
