FB Awards: Action, Music, Sex... Roll Credits

Whew, that took... a good long while. The 10th Anniversary of my film awards kept getting bogged down but now you can see the rest of the nominees for the 2009 film year in categories like Action, Sex Scenes and Musical Sequences, as well as Credit Design, Openings & Endings. Done! I finished it as my birthday gift to myself this morning!

The last page also has nomination tallies for all 42 categories. Inglourious Basterds far outpaced the rest of the field with The Hurt Locker, Avatar, Nine, Precious and Where the Wild Things Are also making strong showings. Two films I really loved (Summer Hours and Whip It) didn't do so well. Those kinds of weird things always happen with awardage, a very imperfect science that's not, uh, really a science. It's more like a scrapbook. And when I "flip" through the scrapbook again in a year I'm going to really wish I was seeing more of Summer Hours and Whip It.

I expect there may be a few errors on the pages as I was working quickly, so if you see them you may notify me politely or ignore. Meanwhile, how has 2009 settled for you? Aren't you glad we're well into 2010?

Pssst. Now that that's complete I can start updating those Oscar predictions tomorrow.

Dammit! I keep forgetting birthdays these days. Thankfully I'm not too late this time.

Happy birthday Nathaniel!

I think completing the FB awards IS a way of celebrating.

I loved the cretit sequence of Coraline too. A lot!

A YES for the Julia and Where The Wild.. opening scenes.

More YESes for the ending of Hurt Locker, Where The Wild.. and Nine. For me that ending saved the movie.

I didn't really like the Thirst sex scene although I definetely think the tranformation scene (oh, that music) was one of the best of the year.

I love the musical scene from An Education.

But how could you not choose that desperate monologue where Julia asks from her old friend to be a part of her plans? I thought it was volcanic!

I'm very much looking forward to those updated predictions.. some additions you should consider: McAvoy in Actor (he's been garnering excellent reviews over the years and it's about time they reward him), Manville and Williams in Actress (raves from Cannes)

Removals: Farrell from Actor (his role is supporting in The Way Back)

And Happy Birthday!

I'm glad you found a place for that underwater love sequence in Whip It, Nathaniel. One of my favorite scenes of the year.

Happy birthday! Thanks for doing the FB awards, it's always fun to read your choices for the non-traditional categories.

P.S. I saw 'I Killed My Mother' at SIFF, loved it! I probably wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for this blog, so thanks!

Aah, excellent. I love these awards. And thanks for the shoutout in the musical sequence category. I saw the picture and thought "didn't I screencap that moment?" and whatdaya know?

2010 is, so far, kinda dire, but I fear I've missed a lot of stuff so it could be better than I am imagining.

Oh my god, any scene from Julia could have made it in. The two that hold most strongly in my mind are the monologue to the old friend (like James T said) and that frighteningly histrionic confrontation with Elena over the money.

Absolutely thrilling film.

(500) Days Of Summer had SO many good scenes. The musical scene, the break-up scene, the scenes in the cinema, the expectations vs. reality scene...pretty much the whole film, really!

And how about the scene in Inglorious Basterds where Soshanna puts on the make-up?

I also really liked the last shot in District 9, where Wikus holds the flower.

Happy Birthday!

Happy (belated) Birthday Nathaniel

Thanks for completing your splendid awards:)

I'm about one or two away from being done with 2009 but i'd have to say, overall it was a excellent year. No 'A's (Hunger is 2008 for me) but quite a few A- and B+ ratings.

I keep thinking my top ten is fairly settled then I see the likes of Goodbye Solo and Still Walking to give me a real (nice) headache.

I have strong reservations about one of your Nine honorees, but I understand your justification for that. We just have completely opposite opinions about that sequence, chiefly surrounding the presence of a certain "singer" appearing in the film at all.

However, recognizing the greatness of Coraline's not safe for children huge production number with French and Saunders more than makes up for it. And the love for the credits sequence. It's beautiful. I still believe the film would have won Animated at the Oscars if it wasn't 3-D. Watching the film without glasses just shows how detailed the film actually is.

Happy birthday, Nathaniel.
