Renée Zellweger

Oh Renée Zellweger, what a hot mess. I love Kathy Griffin's story about her in her latest stand-up special.

That film is full of wonderful little bitchy moments, and it's part of why I love it so much (brilliant staging aside). I don't have a problem with Rob Marshall directing musicals, but if Nine (which I did like) was proof of anything, it's that he's better suited to lighter, snarkier, razzle-dazzle fare.

Renee unfortunately is not taking any new projects and I feel it has something to do with her not being the conventionally pretty actress at a certain age

PLUS
that everybody just started to hate after her kooky performance in cold mountain and then she started taking herself a bit too seriously
and then everybody who hated her for that oscar just bundled against her

so i really do feel like the haters really killed her career and i feel Renee would be part of an HBO series next or in the next united states of tara -esque series

its not fair!

Or she's just enjoying being Bradley Cooper's girlfriend. /luckybitch

anon 4:39 --- stop commmenting under "anonymous" Renée

(I kid. though maybe a cable series *is* a good idea. it's not like she can't act. it's just that she's so freaking annoying. it needs to be harnessed to the right role.)

@ Anon-4:39
Renee should stick to comedy,Drama is not her thing, she always overdoes it,I adore her in comedies and light fare but in dramas she is actually pretty annoying with all the faces.

Since we're on the subject of Nathaniel's favorite actresses (100xlol), "Conviction"'s trailer is out there.

Swank seems to give an OK performance. I have a feeling she will be the movie-saver since it looks pretty cliche to me. Too early for all that, of course.

Nathaniel, you want to love her all over again. Stop living in denial.

Volvagia said...

I'm sorry, but is there even a chance to save Conviction? I say: Either it's one of Swank's worst movies, or it's her best. The latter isn't that difficult.

James T said...

Well, I disagree. The films that won her 2 Oscars were pretty damn good.

I just seen the Conviction trailer, and I have to say, Swank looks pretty good. Poor Annette Benning. lol

I still like her in the first Bridget Jones. Yes, I know, I know....but I do.

I didn't see the second one, for similar reasons to why I've never seen a Sex and the City movie even though I really liked the series. Why bite into a lemon just to see if it's sour? Sometimes you just know.

Volvagia said...

Boys don't Cry?: Well acted snore. Million Dollar Baby?: Sounds about the same. The only film that Conviction may be competing against for the title of "Hilary Swank's best film" is her Nolan film. Of course, that Fangland thing, with John Carpenter, MAY blow all these films out of the water.

While we're on the subject, I rather liked that Conviction trailer. I mean... I didn't want to punch Swank - so that's a good sign.

Can we have Nicholas Cage, Hilary Swank and Renee Zellweger in a remake of "Death Becomes Her?"

Even though I think Zellweger did an okay job, I still wish they'd cast someone else as Roxie. I think Marshall's original choice (if legend is to be believed) of Toni Collete would've been interesting, but my something just tells me that the prefect Roxie would've been Sarah Jessica Parker. I don't know if she was ever in the running, and if she wasn't, i don't know why not!

It's all besides the point. We'll never see the definitive CHICAGO, which would've been Fosse's. Minelli as Velma. Hawn as Roxie. And from what I've read Nicholson as Billy Flynn. Even with dreams of what might have been, you can't knock Zeta-Jones in this movie. And now if we can build a time machine to convince Hugh Jackman to take the part of Billy Flynn...

It's so sad because she was so good in Bridget Jones and Chicago but she got the Oscar for the completely wrong role. She got what should've been Holly Hunter's second Oscar. If Nicole Kidman hadn't been overdue (due to not winning for Moulin Rouge because of Halle), then I believe Renee would've won for Chicago and a lot of this hate would be non-existent. I remember being young and seeing Bridget Jones and Chicago with my mom and thinking she was really good...I never saw Cold Mountain..with good reason.

i actually think Renee is good as Roxie. i just hate her dancing and having seen Toni Collette sing and dance on Broadway (heaven) I was always just so haunted that she didn't get to do it.

and my #1 rule for musicals is that the cast need to be strong singers/dancers (Moulin Rouge! excepted because it's the exception to every rule)

but her gift was comedy and like so many stars who chase Oscar she had to go and get all serious.

Why does Renee Zellweger always look like she just bit into an extremely tart lemon.

Chris -- well, at least this once it serves the scene :)

No, no, no. I only support Hunter’s two Lead Actress nominations they’re her best work – she should’ve gotten another nominated for Home for the Holidays (Lead) and one for Crash (1996, Cronenberg) (Supporting).
I suppose we should be happy that Kidman is sort of like Cher – two nominations – they give it to them for the 2nd one no matter how worthy the 1st one was.

Philip, I (and a whole bunch of people) STILL wouldn't forgive Renée Zellweger for winning in 2002 for Chicago since she would have stolen the Oscar from JULIANNE MOORE that gave the most astonishing performance of the decade in Far From Heaven.

So no, Renée would be hated all along.

Jorge Rodrigues said...

And about that 'Conviction' trailer... It's screams WE WANT OSCAR! (!) Does it ring a bell (Amelia)?

Philip said...

Lol, I suppose that's true...forgot about Julianne. Probably because I've still never seen Far From Heaven, but I know how highly regarded that performance is.

And /3rtfu11, why no love for Holly Hunter in Thirteen? I thought she was spectacular. But I loved just about everything about that movie.

Jorge Rodrigues said...

:) Yeah Holly Hunter is awesome in thirteen. I hate Nikki Reed, so there's one thing to bitch about. :D

Philip said...

And adding to the off-topic discussion: Conviction looks alright, but I la la love the supporting cast.

MRRIPLEY said...

Shame the hate came after cold mountain my god how much did she not deserve that oscar!!! in 03.

i really liked her in chicago and it seemed like she may win after the sag too.

Her nomination felt lazy – she has one scene – I didn’t know it went this far!

Renee was pretty strong in "Chicago." Maybe she was outsung, and I wouldn't have picked her for the Oscar, but at least she nailed Roxie's desperate and cutthroat aspirations. Roxie wasn't supposed to be an aces singer and dancer. She was supposed to be mediocre compared to Velma and had to use her other assets to achieve fame. That mirrors scene is still a stunner (but maybe more credit should be given to Rob Marshall for that), and I loved the courtroom scene when the media leaves her to cover the new murdress. Sad what her career's devolved into now, but she's had a string of great performances to her credit, especially her great 90s films like "One True Thing," "Jerry Maguire," and "Nurse Betty."
