Emmy Nominations Tomorrow

I just remembered that the Emmy Nominations are nearly upon us. I try not to think about them too much because I am always sorely disappointed.

Lost Causes I'm Rooting For: Anything Friday Night Lights -- yegods that show is brillz but particularly Connie Britton and Zach Gilford. Plus Enver Gjokaj for season 2 of Dollhouse. It seems like that was cancelled a hundred years ago but it only ended this past January. He was quite awesome/rangey as Victor even doing impersonations that were on par with several Oscar winning mimicry efforts. Because he was doing excellent work in the genre of sci-fi though, nobody noticed. He has only done 1 (just 1!!!) guest spot job since Dollhouse's cancellation. I am normally not this cocky about things I've never done but I swear to god they need to fire that entire town's casting departments and just replace them with me because they are CONSTANTLY ignoring people who've already proven their worth. That's like burning money!

Nail Biter: All three principle Mad Men women (and a few of the guest stars too) and 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski. The shows are popular with Emmy, the actors less so. But so much deserve.

Shows That Will Do Well That I Like: The United States of Tara, Modern Family, Nurse Jackie, Mad Men and Glee will obviously be there but in what numbers? I cracked myself up reading my review of the Glee pilot this morning. I was worried that they wouldn't let Matthew Morrison sing?!? Hee. I also said the show had a light touch. Wow, that turned out wrong. I love the show but boy did they abandon that light touch for full throttle AND YOU AND YOU AND YOU YOU'RE GONNA LOVE ME!!! belting in record time.

UPDATE: the nominations have arrived.

I'm wondering if Glee will get any acting nominations apart from Jane Lynch (please tell me that's a given - right?). I too would love to see Krakowski nominated. And I'd like to see Kaley Cuoco rewarded for her "straight guy" work with Jim Parsons.

Kristin Chenoweth for playing April Rhodes as if the show belonged to her (which it did, in a way) and Damages (even though I heard it may be getting canceled, Glenn is just unlucky.)

if anyone deserves the Emmy this time its TY Burrell from Modern Family...he is just excellent in it.
and Courtney Cox should get that nomination for Cougar Town...I know its atrocious mostly but I have a soft spot for her, every time they go...all the FRIENDS got nominated for the Emmy except...thats just sad because Cox was really great as Monica is a lot of episodes!

Courteney Cox deserves a nomination for Cougar Town and so does the show. It's gotten so much better.

And Rico Rodriguez for Modern Family as well. That show should get 6 acting nominations...Burrell, Rodriquez, Bowen, Vergara, O'Neil and Stonestreet.

I'm really pulling for Merritt Wever, the totally deserving secret weapon of Nurse Jackie!

I'm really just hoping that a bunch of the Modern Family cast is nominated, which is certainly possible. And even though there's only a 1% chance of it being nominated for anything, just ONE major nomination for Better Off Ted (Portia DeRossi, please) would make me ecstatic. Aside from Lynch, Morrison, and Michele (the most likely), I think it would be great if Chris Colfer and Dianna Agron could score nominations. Agron in particular, because even though she's one of the weakest singers, her performance has a lot of nuance in an ensemble filled with hyper-stereotypes.

Fingers crossed for...

Jane Krakowski
Neil Patrick Harris (Supporting and Guest on Glee)
Matthew Fox (who I love on 'Lost,' even though everybody else hates him)
Lisa Kudrow for guesting on Cougar Town

and, of course, COURTENEY COX. 6 years after the fact is still stings that she's the only Friends actor that went Emmy-nom-less, and the only actress not to win (hard to do when they won't even nominate you!).

I really hope 'Community' gets some love, especially Danny Pudi, I think it is on par with 'Modern Family' but always gets left out of the conversation. The Community episode 'Modern Warfare' was the best single comedy episode this season, give or take South Park's '201'.

And Nick Offerman for 'Parks and Rec' would be a great pick for supporting actor.

I would love to see Chris Colfer get in for 'Glee', but that seems unlikely.

I agree about Cox for 'Cougar Town', and would also throw in Busy Phillips for supporting.

The thing 'bout the emmy is that they get it very very right (Tony Colette) or very ery wrong (Jonh Cryer!). So im not brasing myself for a miracle (Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad))I'll take the obvious (Jane Lynch (Glee)). If they screw that one I might have to Boycott!

Andrew -- TOTALLY (re: Cheno)

Scott -- i think so (re: lynch) but ya never know with first seasons/Emmy

Anon -- ABSOLUTELY (re: Ty Burrell). He's so wonderful on that show. And bonus points for him from me because i think he's terrific in movies too. Loved him as Kidman's husband in Fur and as Liv Tyler's man in Hulk. He takes these nothing parts and makes them interesting (to me). But he's just great on MF.

Luke --yes! she's so funny. anyone remember her from SERIES 7?

Michael -- I love Cougar Town. just sayin.

I'm rooting for a Best Comedy Actor for Jim Parsons.:)

They let Matthew Morrison sing? I thought they had him rapping more often then singing, and then only singing autotuned pop/rock, not the legit standards he could be doing with ease.

201 wasn't so much funny as sad. The ridiculously bleeped and bleeping stupid censorship is, if you feel like insulting the point that they were trying and failed to make because of their bosses, very funny indeed. (The "Censored" bars were Parker and Stone's concept to display the idea of being "ridicule free." The bleeped uses of the Islamic saint? They tarnish the episode we got. 200 or Medicinal Fried Chicken are better and less bitter sweet.)

Volvagia said...

I support a Jim Parsons win. That show is the funniest "old-school sitcom" since Seinfeld. (Friends is hit and miss, Frasier is one note and in general the old-school sitcom has been dying since the laugh track free The Simpsons.)

TIMOTHY OLYPHANT FOR JUSTIFIED. Whew. I really needed to get that out of my system...

I'd love to see Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel nominated alongside each other for GLEE. That'd be terrific. And I'm pretty sure NPH is in for GLEE as well.

My guilty pleasure right now is wanting Bradley Whitford to receive a nomination for THE GOOD GUYS. I don't know why I like that show...but he's soooo good in it.

EMMY TALK! I'd really love to see more TV, Nat, which you’ve considered now and then. Just know I support it.

Anyway, damn straight with Friday Night Lights. Especially Connie Britton. She's been gold-worthy in every episode I've seen, but Emmy won't even gift her (and us) with a "gracious loser" face. It might be wishful thinking, but I honestly think Zach Gilford has a shot at making the shortlist. Fingers crossed.

One thing I'm hoping for is AS LITTLE GLEE AS POSSIBLE!!! The show is absolutely atrocious. I can accept a directing nod, love for Lynch, Michele and Chenoweth, but THAT’S IT. I would really, really enjoy a Best Comedy Series snub. Especially if that makes room for Parks & Recreation, the best comedy that was on television this past year.

PS, this is occasional poster Jaydawg2089. I’m giving the blog thing a try myself.

Naveen andrews from LOST. One of the hottest men alive on TV and also an amazing actor in the part of Sayid.

Luke said...

Oh my gosh! I never put that together! I guess I was so mesmerized by Marylouise Burke and Brooke Smith... Okay, a rewatch is in order in honor of Zoey Barkow!

And as long as we're talking about Guest - I hope we see Ms. Baranski for The Big Bang Theory.

What should be nominated?

Everything about Breaking Bad and Lost. The end.

January Jones for the WIN!

Rosemarie DeWitt was genius in united states of tara!!!

I'm very excited actually. I want Christina Hendricks to get nommed! That vase-smashing scene is still one of the highlights of the show aside from the shocking ending and the gross (but incredible) lawn mower scene :)

Love Love Love Love Modern Family!! The best part of the show really is Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet. My gosh they're hilarious.

Despite the weird season that Desperate Housewives have, I think Dana Delany deserves a nod. Her big breakdown scene in the hospital was one of the most incredibly (Oscar-size) moment of the season and I totally loved it.

Jane Lynch is a given. She's so hilarious that they're crazy if they don't include her. Lea Michele, even though her character gets annoying, deserves a nod. Matthew Morrison, I love him and I think he deserves a nod, but all the rapping needs to end. He's not and SHOULD NOT rap EVER again. Glee has had a lot of wonderful guest stars actually. I think Idina Menzel was wonderful (that voice gave me chills on I Dreamed a Dream) so I think she deserves a nod. Too bad her character is more dramatic than comedic.

Breaking Bad`s Dean Norris MUST get a Supporting Actor nod. He was amazing. Actually, if Breaking Bad just wins all the drama awards (except Supporting Actress, in my perfect world that goes to Christina Hendricks) I`ll be happy

It's a shame that Cox wasn't nominated for Friends but she was unlucky. I don't know if you remember but they submitted themselves all as supporting for the first 4-5 seasons, and then they all submitted themselves as leads.

The truth is the first 3 seasons the Emmys only cared about Lisa Kudrow (Schwimmer scored a not in 96), who won in 1999 and was nominated three times previously(yay). When they started to pay notice to FRIENDS, Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc were the true stars of the ensemble and so got nominated A LOT. And you have to face it, her character was the weakest link of the series, so it was only natural that Emmy darling Aniston would continue to be nominated alongside LeBlanc (Perry was a fluke like Schwimmer, he got one Lead nom).

The truth is, they never really cared about Friends. In the meanwhile, they showered Everybody Loves Raymond and Frasier with awards. Poor taste.

And this year, I'd love to see A LOT of noms for PARKS AND REC which is the best comedy on TV and BETTER OFF TED should get Harrington and De Rossi a nom (it won't, obviously) in comedy and I'd love to see some Emmy love for SONS OF ANARCHY (Katey Sagal) and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and Timothy Olyphant and Matt Bomer.

What I'm praying for?
ZERO noms for 24, ENTOURAGE,
And I'm betting GLEE will be much more snubbed than people think it will. It's very outre to their taste. Remember Pushing Daisies
people?

Anna Paquin, Nelsan Ellis, and Rutina Wesley for True Blood. It would also be great if the show got a Best Drama nomination, but that seems very unlikely, since they didn't go for it last year.

Daniel Armour said...

I don't hold much stock in the Emmy's but if Matthew Fox doesn't get nominated for Best Actor - Drama then I won't bother watching the show... which wouldn't be different from any other year but still...

For Glee, Lynch is a given (and most people are saying she's close to a given to win); Cheno as guest actress, likewise, and I imagine Lea Michele will get nominated.

The thing that I expect will most disappoint me about Glee's nominations is on the male side, where they have a number of terrific actors in the supporting category (Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer, mainly) who are going to be overlooked. Well, always next year.

I do think Glee has the potential to become one of those shows that really floods the Guest Acting categories every year (30 Rock does now, The Practice on the dramatic side would be another example). Apart from Chenoweth, one could easily name a number of other high-profile guests (Harris, mostly notably), plus the lower-profile Mike O'Malley.

Andrew David said...

I guess Jane Lynch is a shoo-in nomination for Glee, but I would love to see Jayma Mays nominated as well. Emma is such a beautiful creation.

Otherwise I'm in it for my usual (unsung) favourites... Rutina Wesley for True Blood, Jennifer Carpenter for Dexter... and Christina Hendricks of course.

Andrew David said...

Oh, and I'm surprised that so many people have mentioned Chris Colfer for Glee... I don't think he's particularly impressive, nor are any of the actors who play the students (although Lea Michele and Dianna Agron are probably the best). From the main cast, it's the adults who do most of the heavy lifting in the acting department. Glee has that amazing triumvirate of comedic women: Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays and Jessalyn Gilsig, who just got funnier and funnier in the first half of the season.

Jorge Rodrigues said...

Jayma Mays did not submit herself for Emmy consideration. At least she's not on the list.

NATHANIEL R said...

Jorge -- oh, that's sad. She's probably my favorite performance.

No one in particular -- as for nominations from my favorite shows. I differ somewhat than what i think i see in voters. I don't necessarily want entire casts from my favorite shows to be nominated. I really value standout work enough to not want that to happen.

I don't wanna name names but TRUE BLOOD is a perfect example. I really love the show but I'm not sure any actor deserves a nomination. I think even the best performers on that show are kind of uneven from episode to episode... or even within episodes.

i hope i'm not making True Blood enemies because I'm a True Blood fan!
