I really don't get the Academy handing DDL a second Oscar for Plainview. If it was that he didn't have one, OK. But it's the wrong type of part for a SECOND win. Of course, if it wasn't him, it was going to be Depp and based on his career I'd have no problem with that. My pick would be Pegg. He took a REAL cop (Not a total stick in the mud (The Wicker Man ('73)), goof off (Beverley Hills Cop), psycho (Bad Boys) or mixture of the latter two (Dirty Harry)) and found something there true, balancing out what could have been an over directed, over stylised mess, instead of saving it through matching it.

If you switch which part type when(extreme inhuman before subtle evocation) I could get behind both wins. I hold 2nd wins to a higher standard than 1st wins, and I question why more critics don't think that way. And yes, I am talking Hot Fuzz. I'm searching through film and there are so far 3 light comic turns, 2 dramedic turns and 5 Darker Comic turns I think are Best of The Year:

The Oscars aren’t about what they’d like to proclaim and pretend to be about. It has always been a patting on the back from friends. Many great actors who are dislike within the industry get denied nominations and actual wins. How can you judge a performance as the best? It is all personal bias. There are several different styles of acting that are appropriate for the character they’re playing and the film their in ---- but if you talk to a lot of critics they claim that was subtly, behind the eyes, none flamboyant performances as if that affects the causal movie fan ---- most of the legendary performances standout because of clever dialogue and showy moments of behavior.
Some 2nd Oscars are default – Field, Foster, and Swank.
I'm the furthest thing from casual. I love the stuff, and I'm trying to get into the classics before diving back into the new material. To see where it all comes from, y'know?
And by the way, you do realise that under your logic, Tony "Say Hello" Montana is a more legendary performance than Pacino's Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II. Montana is nothing but clever dialogue and showy moments of behaviour.
