No time to digest this quite yet but the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF hereafter) has begun announcing their lineup which you can read at IndieWire. They'll be adding to that since they usually have hundreds of titles.
Though I doubt I'll be able to afford the trip up north this year, here's the ones I'm immediately excited about (for reasons either Oscar-watching or Other): Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (pictured left), Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, Im Sang-Soo’s The Housemaid, Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech, Francois Ozon’s Potiche, Rowan Joffe’s Brighton Rock, Susanne Bier’s In A Better World and John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole.

I love the line-up and can't wait to see how a few of them do----Especially Rabbit Hole! Kidman is back, and with the journalists too. She gets front billing on the AP article about it... "Kidman, Affleck films among Toronto fest debuts"
And does anyone else think that Paltrow has a chance coming from left field for Country Song? It's just that there is absolutely NO buzz about it, and if there is, it's very minimal. I think that she might be able to score a nomination, especially with that country-esque voice she has.
Pretty excited for this lineup even though it may give Swank a boost. Please, not again.
Reading the description of The King's Speech over at Anne Thompson's blog, one thing stood out: "Plagued by a dreaded nervous stammer and considered unfit to be King, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush)." Doesn't that just scream "LOUD, SHOWY OSCAR BAIT!"? I may be dreading Rush more than Swank this year.
Michael -- yeah. i'm trying not to think about Rush's hammy awards grabbing again. statues seem magnetized to him.
That's quite a line-up they've got.
On the TIFF website they're already buzzing about Kidman and Eckhart's performance, calling them "captivating". She's in, people. And she might win if Swank and Bening splits the vote. Wright and Watts will be the fillers.
I imagine that the TIFF organisers will want to sell the films and performances so people will see the films they've selected. I will wait until the reviews that can make or break movies come out on Rabbit Hole.
amy -- gotta agree with amy here. at least on the TIFF sales thing. I don't believe in waiting for reviews if i love an actor but festival programmers do have to describe all movies as good in order to sell their tickets.
Nathaniel, I don't wait for reviews, either. What I meant was that it will be the reaction from critics that will put her in the award race :). If the critics rally behind the performance AND film then she may get in but if they say "ok", "fine", etc., then nothing will happen especially since history suggests that Kidman will only get in if the film is acclaimed.
amy yes yes. that's true. especially on the "needs the film" part. They don't love her on her own like say Judi Dench or Meryl Streep.
Oh Nathaniel, I hope things change for you, I'm going to TIFF for the 7th year in a row and I can barely afford it. But I'm driving and no one can stop me! :)
Still no word on The Tree Of Lfe, The Rum Diary and The Way Back ? Maybe Venice when those nods are announced sometime this week. Here's hoping anyway...
No Bad Movies, according to Aaron Eckhart in an interview @ Comic Con, Rum Diary may be pushed to 2011 because Depp may not be able to promote it due to filming Pirates.....so who knows?
