OFCS Winners

The Online Film Critics Society announced their winners this morning. It's the expected winners who've 'worn a groove' as Sasha has been known to say. So everyone votes for them and shall for the rest of the season. For the most part. Hopefully supporting actress will shift towards Leo, Adams or Weaver for the win... all of them actually supporting players, and amazing ones at that. It's been a good year for actresses it has.

Is this awards season all a dream? It's happening on a loop.
No surprises in the winners so I had to goof off a little in the listing. Just trying to keep it fun.

Original Exposition. Ha.

This Hailee thing is getting old, especially when Amy Adams gives the best performance of her career and has been losing these awards to a 14 year old who apparently occupies every inch of her own movie.

I think voters are confusing "best performance" and "most precocious". I normally can understand why certain performances get attention even when I don't agree, but this is getting crazy.

People Seriously need to back off this Hailee thing. Does anyone realize Helena is stealing her own nomination? Category fraud isn't new, its not like we're witnessing a Big Foot type rarity here.

"Our Leading Lady of Ubiquity" is my personal favorite.

My name is Anonymous and I have a nomination fetish. I love it when teens get oscar nominations. Not that it guarantees my approval of the nom. I just think its really cool.

But in all seriousness, surely somebody remembers that Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lawrence, Tilda Swinton, Anne Hathaway, and others gave great performances too? Or did I just imagine that The Social Network was a good film at best, and that there were more than four actors worthy of accolades?

I just 'got a copy' of Inception out of an idea to write an RIP post for Pete Postlehwaite. I rethought that my idea was a terrible one. ANYWAY, I do understand the gripe of the exposition in the script. But the structure of the film itself is one for the ages. Or maybe that's what the editing was for.

Well, at least they didn't pick Mila Kunis.

[[Insert my typical Hailee hate post.]] Really, though, am I missing something? I hated everything about her performance. Such an uninspiring lead. When she fell down that hole I cheered.

NATHANIEL R said...

Kurtis -- but Mila > Hailee

haha. the point is it SUCKS that that's the two everyone talk about now. Hello JACKI WEAVER. the world is a sick place.

Could the Fighter ladies actually lose this? I've gotten used to the idea of Steinfeld's and Kunis's nominations, but never gave any thought to their actual chances until recently...

NATHANIEL R said...

Jonathon -- you are not missing anything. People like and feel for the character (I do, too) and thus elevate the actress. Happens all the time. see Hilary Swank's win in 2004 over 4 superior performances of less loveable characters.

Is this the part of the race where things start to get predictable?

Social, Fincher, Farrell, Portman, Bale, little girl committing category fraud, etc.

NATHANIEL R said...

Vince - yes. but i * LOVE * your Freudian slip there. You think Colin and your mind immediately races to "Farrell" ;)

NATHANIEL R said...

Poppy - that's true but Hailee and Mila are still the ones to blame if Jacki gets shut out (which I am more and more sure will happen. goddamnit) because Helena was never going anywhere. She was booked up long long ago.

The Toy Story thing made me laugh. Hopefully things get shaken up a bit by the SAG and Globe awards. They don't always fall in line with the critics.
As for the Steinfeld situation, I'm staying optimistic by remembering that Jacki Weaver seemed like a longshot from the get-go, and she's still one, so nothing has changed there. Kunis and Steinfeld aren't locks so she still has room to get in.
It helps that I thought Steinfeld gave a great performance. Obviously she doesn't belong in the category, and I hate fraud as much as anybody else, but I don't feel the double pain of also thinking she was merely adequate or worse.

Oh god, the whole Jacki Weaver thing is so unforgivable. It's not like it's even a strong supporting year where good turns inevitably get bumped. It's slim pickin's, and they're still all set to shaft the most deserving of the lot. Poor Mila Kunis -- it's totally not her fault that I've come to scowl when I hear her name.

NATHANIEL R said...

Mike -- good point. she was a longshot from the get go. I'm just so disappointed that my fellow critics (after LA & NY) just seemed to dump her en masse. ugh. i care too much about these things. must get distance!

It hurts me in tender places that Hershey is not getting more accolades for "Black Swan".

tender places like your fingernails? or shoulder blades?

I'm glad that everybody is criticizing Hailee fraud category...still think that the solution with the Academy could be one move à la Keisha Castle-Hughes, after all the race for the fifth spot is still quite open...

I think that Christian Bale is supporting and deserves every award. As for Hailee Steinfeld, I haevn't seen her, but The Fighter ladies are a bit lost in their movie.

I agree hailee should be free from this category fraud that the film company has been promoting her in. And give some room for the ACTUAL Supporting actresses. and what's up with the discontent with mila kunis gettin the attention instead of Barbara Hershey or other actresses in the supporting category? I think her performance is cunning and quite enigmatic but not to the extent where we r opaque to her intentions. Maybe she shes not gd enuf to win but definitely gd for a nom.

Mirko said...

I wanna Bale be an Oscar Winner...let's hope the Academy won't be too fond with Rush again...

At this point, I'd rather see Anne Hathaway get a nomination for Alice in Wonderland than Hailee Steinfeld ride category fraud in for True Grit; I mean, at least it would be a supporting role getting a supporting nomination in a film these critics groups have inexplicably embraced. To be honest, with the way her performance has been embraced, Steinfeld easily could have gotten in for Leading Actress. However, that would probably bump someone like Nicole Kidman who has pretty consistently been snubbed the last seven years (Dogville, Birth, Fur, and Margot at the Wedding), so I'll bite my tongue and hope it doesn't happen again.

Here we go again. Why even announce one's winners as an awards-giving body, especially this late, if it's just to say what everyone else has been saying all season long? At least be interesting and/or daring in one's choices. Don't show up two hours late to the party only to be the umpteenth person to bring cola. It's like they all aim to make us hate the films and performances we may have even rooted for at one point, unless your "The Social Network," whose greatness I'm still waiting to comprehend.

And as someone who's seen "Black Swan" twice now, will someone else tell me what Hershey did that was that much more special than Kunis to warrant her being singled out for her performance. I mean, I think she's quite effective, but I don't see how she's better.

Fernando Moss said...

I agree with Kurtis O., if this was a like 2005 where the best of the year (Maria Bello) got snubbed but you still look at the line up and find 5 amazing performances, it could be kinda understandable but well, it's not.

Nate, people also think "Social Network" and "Black Swan" can cure cancer.

There are some sites in which you are not allowed to say you don't like Black Swan. If you do, you are a worthless, brainless, souless human being who doesnt deserve to be alive.

I wouldn't count Jackie Weaver out of the race just yet. Remember that AFI award her friend Cate Blanchett presented her with? AMPAS loves Cate (they nominated her for Elizabeth: Armed & Dangerous, for goodness sake) and she no doubt has some pull within the voting body.
