Birthday Boy

You totally won't believe this but I'm kind of an egomaniac. I know... you're probably slackjawed right now, stunned into silence with such a shocking revelation. But snap out of it. The festivities must begin.

My real life friends know that my birthday is a month long affair. It doesn't matter when it begins --just that it isn't some measly 24 hour celebration. So it is with them so shall it be with you, my abstract unseen minions. My birthday lasts for a whole freaking month. So wish me well. And keep doing it.

(Yes that's me from last years celebration, drunk with a "winner" ribbon hanging from my mouth. These things happen.)

Two friends surprised me a few nights back with a great dinner & show. So my birthday has officially begun and will conclude approximately mid June. You can join in too. Buy me things! (For the traditionalists out there my actual birthday is on June 6th but I wanted to give you ample time to choose your gift.)

Or you can donate to keep the film experience running smoothly which is an even better idea. I've added a donate button on the right hand sidebar. There's lots of things I'd like to do with the site but funds are running low. So please consider donating for my birthday to keep me in the Oscar prognosticating and general movie babbling blogging business for more years. If you're going to be a cheapskate or something you can at least send me a nude photo.

This fundraising birthday plea has been brought to you by Nathaniel for and on behalf of Nathaniel. Nathaniel thanks you in advance for your patronage.

A Question of Utmost Importance

Are bangs coming back in?

"A Message To Myself"

And now, by cinematic proxy, a 45 second portrait of my daily angst whilst staring at the computer trying to write either this blog or my other projects.

Subsitute the popcorn for cheez-its or any form of chocolate and it's almost a f**king documentary.

Win Lindsay Lohan & Meryl Streep!!!

Reminder. Enter this Contest

In regards to the title of this post: I'm not really giving away people -- not quite successful enough for human trafficking. But y'all can win A Prairie Home Companion poster for your bedroom / locker / padded cell. Here's how...

Send an e-mail any time between now and June 16th, 2006 to filmexperience@gmail.com w/ "prairie contest" as subject. The e-mail MUST include:

1. Name
2. Mailing Address (in case you win)
3. A very brief ode (one sentence or two) to ANY of the assembled cast members (love letter, stream of thought, poem, lyric, limerick, haiku --anything goes!)

Two winners will be chosen by random drawing from e-mails containing all three elements. PLEASE NOTE: I reserve the right to share any #3 element of your e-mails on the blog. The rest of the e-mail content will naturally be kept private.

But back to the movie. Given my extrovert-style affection for certain members of this cast, not to mention the man in the director's chair, you can imagine how breathlessly I await this film. I have not been invited to a pre-screening yet (grrrr -get to it publicists) but A Prairie Home Companion opens on June 9th.

I'm pretending it's opening on June 6th, because I know in her heart of hearts La Lohan really wants to take me out for my birthday dinner at which time I can take her gently by the hands for a 'come to Jesus' meeting with her about her fame and appropriate career models. Hint: Kidman. Ryan. Bullock. Roberts. Witherspoon. SJP. Etc... These are ALL better choices than a Tara Reid/Robert Downey Jr/Britney Spears fusion.

Brilliance Elsewhere. Go...

Not that they need the publicity but I'm loving Go Fug Yourself today. There's this divine post about the Eurovision Song Contest --an event I've never forgotten from my two years in Europe and something I also feel alarmed is not televised in any way in which I can get to it. Earlier today there was a uniquely sad/funny/smart plea-for-help from Ms. Spears herself --as channeled through the Fug Girls of course.

Brava.

IMDB (International) Surprise

I just need to take a moment here to give a shout out to that online movie bible the IMDB. I have my issues with them --the year they reference after the movie title is the big one-- but most of the time I'm just grateful they exist.

Whoever is doing their little flipchart birthday thing to their right hand side is really making me proud lately. It used to be that they would only display someone currently famous along with dead legends. Even if the currently famous weren't particular moviefamous at the expense of far greater people that they could visually reference. Lately I've noticed they've stopped ignoring foreign stars. This is a very good thing. Nikolaj Lie Kaas, pictured to your left, is up there today and that puts a smile on my face. He made my Top 100 Countdown if you'll recall and anyone who doesn't know who he is ought to rent themselves Lars Von Trier's The Idiots or last year's Brothers, immediately. Takk skal du ha IMDB. (That's Norwegian not Danish but I don't know any Dansk, sorry.)

For Scandinavian readers. Please click here than answer me this What are Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj and all these other Danish stars recording? Are they singing? Am i correct in guessing it's a tsunami relief song? Is it any good? And if so how do I hear this? I'm filled with questions.

And a comment starter for international readers: please feel free to name a favorite actor/actress from your home country in the comments --someone you feel deserves a more international spotlight. Who knows...maybe you'll help another reader to discover them.

Madonna's tour commenced over the weekend. Hanging herself from a cross, getting vulgar about politicians, s & m fetishes? Now that's more like it. Where did Madonna's legendary nerve go when that American Life video got all neutered --right around the time that everything at all critical of our country's administration was most needed? Oh well... the past. spilt milk. etc... Madonna is back and I'll play some Confessions as I work today in her everlasting honor.

Let's Start at the Very Beginning

For those of you wondering why I'm counting down the days (4) to a movie which I don't really expect to like all that much (X-Men: The Last Stand), it's like this: These mutants are a permanent part of my psyche. It all started at Christmas time in 1979 when there, next to my stocking filled with candy, fruit and other long forgotten knick-knacks, was issue #129 of "The Uncanny X-Men" (pictured to your left). I had read one previous issue purchased at a neighborhood Seven-Eleven (issue #125 I believe) and presumably somebody in my family noticed how thunderstruck I was reading it. And reading it. And reading it some more.

There's a thrill that runs through my body while watching these movies that has nothing to do with the quality, whether they its tentative and serviceable (the first) or confident and exciting (the second) or --well the third movie can wait for its adjective. Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Cyclops... they are as much a part of my biography as Madonna or Michelle Pfeiffer or any 80s cultural figure that I grew up with and became emotionally attached to. Seeing them come to life? Sweet.

But because of this I'll never be completely satisifed. The movie in my head will always be sharper, grander, more definitive and it will be undeterred by budgetary limitations or Hollywood's superhero formulas. And the casting?

Though they obviously done the world proud with Hugh Jackman (Ahhhh, Jackman) the ideal X-Men movie would cast each character as carefully. There would be no examples of "oops they played this character in a cameo so..." or "they have the physicality for it so who cares about the talent" and of course, no "bankability" concerns. For example: Storm. Halle Berry always was and always will be completely wrong for the part. I'm not saying this to offend anyone but I can only think it was a case of comicbook ignorance combined with racial myopia that got her the role.

"Storm is black. Who is a famous and bankable black actress? Halle Berry! The part is yours, Ms. Berry, come on down."

It's as if box office and skin color were enough. Berry's movie star persona (consciously sexy, emotionally fragile, etc...) as compelling as it can be in the right role, is just about the polar opposite of Storm's persona in the comic book pages (regal, a born leader/teacher, completely unconcerned with her own hotness). If they thought that Angela Bassett or Lynn Whitfield or any other known actresses at the time were too old or not secure enough investments, they should have gone straight to an unknown. There are probably hundreds of virtually unknown talented and beautiful black actresses out there that would have done more with the role and become stars in the process. Look how well the larger casting net worked for Wolvie. While it's true that Dougray Scott originally had that role and was better known (at the time) than Hugh Jackman, the shift to unknown as centerpiece hardly hurt ticket sales.

So, yes, I'm counting down. How can I not? But the movie playing in my own head will always be the one and only X-Men: The (Masterpiece) Movie.

Another trip down memory lane? Here were my gushy thoughts preceding the original film's release way back in 2000. Now that I'm sufficiently embarrassed, talk amongst yourselves.

Bridges "It doesn't matter if an actor is sweating blood or tossing it off, a great performance is a great performance is a great performance."

Technical Difficulties

As you can probably tell I'm having some technical difficulties. In my normal course of updating the sidebar I somehow lost, than screwed up the entirety of the sidebar. My apologies.

Enjoy this picture of Jennifer Connelly from the upcoming Little Children while I clean up.

Preferred Mutations

This was difficult but in deferrence to the preferred number at 6 things I've narrowed down my most coveted X powers to six. These are the powers I'd most like to borrow at will.

1. flight (Storm)
2. telepathy (Phoenix)
3. teleportation (Nightcrawler)
4. phasing (Kitty Pryde)
5. super strength (Colossus)
6. absorbtion/transferrence (Rogue, so that I can get my greedy hands on the other powers too. Or greedy lips if the mutant lender is hot)

Tarzan, Lord of the Bad Musicals

Remember last week when we took a tour of hairless nearly naked ape men to celebrate Tarzan's opening? Well... it was just an excuse to take a tour of hairless nearly naked ape men really. I didn't mean to celebrate the Broadway musical. I just wanted to clarify in case that post read like an endorsement. Because the new musical?

It.

Sucks.

I didn't even pay to see it and I want my money back.

I can't emphasize its suckitude strongly enough. If you're a tourist and you're thinking Disney + something I've heard of + fun night at the theater, please please please think again. If it has to be Disney go see Lion King again (but better yet see real musical theater like the hilarious Drowsy Chaperone or the brilliance of Sweeney Todd. The first 5 minutes of Tarzan, which is basically the shipwreck prologue, features truly great visual effects work. But that's before the songs and the story starts. My favorite part of the show was probably seeing the people ushered in after the prologue. If you're late to a show you have to wait until some sort of break to take your seat. In this case that's harsh punishment for tardiness because you've missed the best part. The rest of the two and half hours is t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e. But if you're late, it's your own damn fault. Don't be late to the theater. There's live actors on stage. They can see you being rude to them.

I don't even know where to start. Over-amped lengthy dreadful songs which don't know how to move the story, they just repeat the book. Hideous set (or lack thereof). Almost impossibly lame dialogue. Uncomfortable performances. The lighting received the show's only Tony nomination and you can see why --there are a few moments that work due to their lighting effects but the nomination still should've gone to Sweeney Todd which uses its harsh red light to considerably more dramatic effect than this show uses it's Wicked-inspired purples and greens.

The thing I found most confusing was that whoever created the whole shipwreck sequence also must have designed the rest of the show and that's just weird because the rest is garish or cheap looking. In one moment late in the first act, a giant spider enters the set hoping to feast on Jane. I suddenly flashed back to my high school float construction party (that's how amateurish the giant spider looks). There I am trying to watch a 15 million dollar Broadway show and all I can think about is building the float with my buddies Linda, Christine, Therese, and Annette!

Thinking about my high school girls is way more fun than sitting through the show so perhaps I shouldn't complain about the mnemonic mishap.

Paris is Only a City in France

I love skimming gossip blogs for daily amusements. The ones I check in with most frequently are popbytes, The Gilded Moose, and what would tyler durden do? (big dogs like pink is the new blog, A Socialite's Life, Defamer, and DListed are also much fun). But here's why I could never write one:

Paris Hilton

Just yesterday I was reading the sparkly Glitterati Gossip (another I enjoy) and she was spinning the oh-so-charming tale of two trashy talent-free rich & famous types (Paris Hilton & Brandon Davis) verbally abusing a trashy talented rich & famous type that I like very much (Lindsay Lohan). Seems that Lindsay is "poor" and therefore "disgusting" What that says about the rest of us who don't earn millions of dollars each time we complete a project at work we can only imagine. So obviously we are all worthy of Paris's contempt.

And yet... and yet... people seem to like her. Magazines puts her on the cover. To twist Paris' latest inane catchphrase : that's NOT sexy.

My feeling is this: We should only obsess on talented people! Any idiot can be born into a wealthy family. Celebrities who think they are above it all should only be entitled to that feeling if we have placed them up high on a pedestal because we had no other choice --because they have levels of talent chutzpah and charisma that no mere civilian could ever hope to muster if they had three lifetimes in which to do it (think Madonna!)

Here's the cool part if you love gossip...

Reportage on the rich, famous, crazy, stupid and celebrity obsessions in general would not suffer if we drew these lines. There's still more than enough trashy bizarre dumb talented celebrities to make for good copy (Courtney Love, La Lohan, Britney & Whitney, Mimi who is now emancipated, Tom Cruise, etc... the list goes on forever. Truly.) Why be obsessed with people who have only trashiness to offer? Why is everyone into reading about Paris Hilton? It's like celebrating that chick in junior high who made everyone else's lives miserable. Is it just mass self-loathing from the populace?

Join me in this cause people: Ignore her. If we do it for long enough she might go away. Refuse to buy magazines when she's on the cover --change the channel if she's on TV. Let us only celebrate trash when it comes armed with talent! I PROMISE you there will still be enough human garbage for our amusement.

This is hopefully the last thing this blogger will ever say about Paris Hilton. Unless she does start making lots of movies. *Shudder*
