Party Like It's 1999

Your wish is my command. Some retroactive pleasure for you. Let me know what you think and let me know what I'm missing. Very much a work in progress. I'll do other years if response is good.

You're amazing, thank you!

Re: What you've missed - maybe you should see "Cider House" and "Green Mile" just to see what Oscar loved so much (*cough*). I really enjoyed "Mansfield Park" though, and although "Hideous Kinky" isn't particularly great, Winslet is terrific (as always).

Re: Best Supporting Actor - what did you think of Harry J. Lennix's work in "Titus"?

Re: Best Actress/Supporting Actress - how about Kidman in "Eyes Wide Shut"? I thought she should have won an Oscar for that performance, in either category (that monologue...)

Re: Best Picture/Director - good calls on "Malkovich" and "All About My Mother" being top tier; personally, I'd give the former Best Picture and hand Almodovar Best Director.

More... more! :)

Myself, I thought that Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut added an extra half hour to the running time...

Every. Word. Was. Spoken. Oh. So. Freaking. Separately.

Yay, retroactive awards! I'd seen your 99 awards already, but this is still fun... since you appear to have changed your mind a bit since then.
I must say, though... you say 99 was a weak year for lead actresses, but you missed 2 of the oscar nominees here... considering that you loved the other 3 nominees, I suggest you seek out McTeer and Streep stat. I haven't seen Tumbleweeds, but I thought Streep was great, even if it wasn't her best work.
I also thought Cider House Rules was pretty good. The score in particular was quite nice. But giving Michael Caine an oscar? Why? He even had one already...

All that said, can't wait for 98, and beyond...

Woohoo, a blast from the past!

Little voice in head: I shall thwap you for using such a clichéd phrase.

Stop.

Anyway, this was awesome, Nathaniel. I, too, am looking forward to 1998.

I never thought us Film Experience readers would express a gentle support for a Miramax/Hallstrom collaboration, but I'd love to echo the Cider House goodwill. I think it's wonderfully well made syrup.

Each time I hear a Chocolat dissing, I flinch because of my own guilty enjoyment of it. Oh sure, it was never worthy of that Best Pic spot, but it did everything it set out to do. And I feel the same way (and more so) about Cider House.

All this happy talk for The Cider House Rules makes it easier to post my own 1999 awards. Which can be found here.

Also, some suggestions for the illustrious Film Bitch:

Limited role:
Allison Janney - American Beauty
Mary Kay Place - Being John Malkovich
Vanessa Redgrave - Girl, Interrupted
Gina Gershon - The Insider
Peter Gallagher - American Beauty

Sexpot:
Ryan Philippe or SMG - Cruel Intentions
The pie - American Pie
Catherine Keener - Being John Malkovich
Brad Pitt - Fight Club

Hero:
Ronna - Go

I'd throw in Being John Malkovich for best ensemble. Keener and Malkovick were the standouts, but everyone was great.
And for best line reading, Mary Kay Place's "why don't you alphabetize me? and remember... I comes before U" is a shoe-in in my book. Along with just about any of Catherine Keener's lines ("yawn, figure it out!").
Also, you mentioned Tina Holmes... what ever happened to her? She was getting "young Meryl Streep" comments for Edge of Seventeen... and then poof, no career to speak of. I'd much prefer her to the now ascendant Katie Holmes. Ew.
Edge of Seventeen as a whole was really terriffic also.

i love 1999, so many good movies, so many mistakes by the academy. i consider 'american beauty' one of the most overated films of all time, but i'd support a best supporting actor nod for wes bentley (whatever happened to him?)

also in that category - alan rickman in 'galaxy quest', william h macy in 'happy texas', jude law & philip seymour hoffman in 'ripley'. winner - hayley joel osment.

but tom cruise in 'magnolia' is on my list of the six worst performances ever nominated for an oscar.

actress contenders - frances o'connor in 'mansfield park' and franke potente in 'run lola run'.

toughest category? animated feature; hard to choose between 'toy story 2', 'the iron giant' and 'south park'.

Tina Holmes is currently starring in the final season of "Six Feet Under" in a pivotal role. She's pretty good too; I'd love to see her get more attention after this.

ooh, nice.
So she does in fact have a career? I should check her imdb site to really see what she's been doing. But I'd love to see her get some high profile film roles soon.

I agree with the Nicole Kidman love. I thought she was great. But the clincher moment in EWS? When she is helping her daughter with the homework and gives a slight upwards look to Tom and smiles. I dunno why but that bit seemed great - specially considering I watched it just this year. Great movie.

I would ask why you did not deem TITUS worthy of Art Direction or Costume nods or otherwise.

Chocolat and Cidar House Rules are much better than people give credit for. Chocolat especially I thought was a nice little romantic movie about one of my addictions (er, chocolat - not Johnny Depp)

My Best Supporting Actress of 99? Cate Blanchett for Mr. Riply... again, I don't know why - I just responded to it.

And Go is SO FREAKIN AWESOME.

...that is all

(continue plz nathaniel)

Be still my beating heart - Nathaniel thank you so much for this.

To my intense joy (baby cineaste in my old age status) I've actually seen quite a few of these. I'm so happy Topsy Turvey got a look in (more than a look in, sounded like quite a lot of love to me). Agree totally on Jim Broadbent. He's been a favourite of mine since way back when - such a wonderful actor and one of the biggest shocks of my actor watching experience has been to see him make it so well in film. He spent many years as part of a two man team doing stage versions of The French Revolution, The Gospel of St Matthew etc and was beyond funny in them. Some were eventually captured for TV and are worth finding if that's possible.

I also Agree that Kidman shouldve gotten nominated for Eyes Wide Shut, that scene in the bedroom with tom, when she is high and she confesses how she wanted to have sex with another man while in the marriage, is pure brillance, and that scene was actually Ad-libed, she said it in an interview, Stanly asked her to do it that way.

That scene wouldve made the perfect oscar clip if you ask me.....

I agree with Rob as far as Kidman goes for EWS the. delivery. was. too. stylized. for. me.

i. like. stylization. if. it. informs. the. characterization. but. i feel like it didn't work in this case.

Speed it up Nic!
