Vertigo's Psycho said...: I love the way the title is referred to, but not actually stated ("Sammy, remember when we were kids? Remember what we always used to say to each other?"). It's a beautiful scene in a beautiful film (#1 on my list of favorite modern dramas), and I can only hope the forthcoming Ruffalo/Lonergan collaboration is in the same ballpark.; 1:11 AM

adam k. said...: Do you think Ruffalo deserved a lead nom? Russell Crowe aside, 2000 was a very strong year for lead actors. I can't say Ruffalo was necessarily better than Bardem, Bale, Hanks, Crudup, Harris, or even Futterman for that matter. Aside from Bardem and Bale, I'm not really sure who I'd choose.; 11:53 PM
adam k. said...: Come to think of it, it's kind of a Gyllenhaal in BBM situation. Love the performance, but couldn't quite justify giving it a lead slot in such a strong year. So nomming him in support would just feel so good, even though I know it's bad.

Actually, with Ruffalo, I think I'd place him above at least Futterman and Hanks, so he'd get a slot in my book anyway.; 11:56 PM

Vertigo's Psycho said...: The Ruffalo comparisons to Brando were apt, IMO. I'd unhesitatingly give Ruffalo Best Actor for 2000 over anyone- I was blow away by his astounding, finely shaded performance (the naturalness, the sensitivity, the immaturity/old soul mixture, the humor, the anger) and subsequent viewings have done nothing to alter this opinion. I can't see any other actor playing the role with the same distinctiveness- Ruffalo "owns" the role of Terry. Although physically Mark didn't match up with the also-perfectly cast and brilliant Laura Linney, from their first scene together the two of them are so convincingly in synch you never doubt they're siblings who share a rich history and a deep bond.

I don't have any problem with Ruffalo's screen time- Linney's Sammy has more scenes, but the film's about Sammy and Terry's bond, and Mark is definitely the male lead (Culkin and Broderick offer excellent male supporting performances).

P.S.- Kamikaze, quit cheating yourself, watch this wonderful movie, and become a Ruffalo fan. You know you want to.; 5:17 PM
