According to Coming Soon (by way of the Sydney Morning Herald) filming has begun on Baz Luhrmann's Australia, a romantic epic to star Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.
The film is set during World War II. Nic will play an English aristocrat with a mammoth ranch in Australia and Jackman a cattle driver. How butch! Baz Luhrmann, one of my very favorite filmmakers only makes a movie every 5 years or so, so you can imagine how thrilled I am to hear that Australia has officially begun. How do you suppose he'll work that "L'Amour" signage into this one?

Maybe there'll be a flashback to Paris or something. Part of the movie takes place during the WWII bombing of Darwin, but I truly doubt a city such as Darwin would have a "L'amour" sign to be honest.
I cannot wait for this movie, which is bad because it won't be out until at least 2008.
Baz hasn't steered me wrong so far...
Maybe Baz could incorporate it into the outback pub. Can't set a film in the middle of the Australian outback without one of those! Perhaps on the tin roof or the pub wall?
Too much you think? Mmm... back to the drawing board.
I can't wait for this film either. Unfortunately, I think the newspaper was actually describing a workshop and not the start of proper filming. I believe that might be in March, so a little bit longer to wait. *sigh*. Here's looking at you 2008.
If you guys are eagar for more information about the film, Vanessa at Baz the Great (www.bazthegreat.co.uk) does a really good job of collecting and sorting all the news.
Well the Red Curtain trilogy is through, so maybe the L'amour sign is gone with it.
I can't wait to see what Lurhmann has in store for 'Australia' - what will the movie be like, since he says he's through with making movies in the style of the RCT?
As Kat was saying, Nicole and Hugh were in Sydney just before Christmas for the workshop at Baz's house of Iona, so that may indeed be what was happening and not filming of the actual film. Pre-Production is definitely started though.
Hmm, they actually mentioned it on the news that Nicole was back in Australia filming her latest movie, and the article does make it sound as if they've started.
I was excpecting this movie to take months to actually get behind the cameras.
It was going to start filming in March...but Imdb.com says that it's filming and other Kidman news her Noah Baumbach film is titled Green Mangos...I hope it'll be as good as The Squid and The Whale, but Luhrman said he's making another trilogy, or so I read in a magazine not so long ago and he says it will kind of be historical epics and that he still wants to make ALEXANDER with Kidman. He revived her career once with Moulin Rouge can he do it again with Australia???
Her career doesn't really need to be rescued. I mean, she has The Visitors and that His Dark Materials movie next year. It's not like she's Sharon Stone or something.
