Dreamgirls, "The Devil", and the Dauphine

One of my favorite below the line categories at the Oscar each year is Costume Design. This year's lineup is special because a) they're all worthy nominees b) some are even [gasp] contemporary entries and c) it's easy to imagine scenarios where different movies win.

So, who is going to take it? Arguments can easily be made for three of the movies, four if you're stretching. More on the costumes race here (return and comment. Agree? Disagree? And tell us which of the pictured frocks you'd most like to wear.

This is an exciting race this year. Not only because all of them could win but because they're all so worthy if they do.

Dreamgirls is obviously the safe choice (and who can fault it for that?), but I'm gonna be brave and predict Patricia Field. Yes, the costume branch is very biased against contemporary outfits, but it ain't just the costume guild voting. I think they may choose to surprise us ala Prescilla.

But, really, I'd be happy for any of them, but, yeah, Prada or Marie would be particularly sweet.

I think Prada and Marie are the ones to watch. I love when design elements integrate dynamically with the storytelling & both Prada and Marie are about the clothes on some level.

I think Prada is much more likely than Marie here, because many voters likely haven't seen/don't care about Marie, whereas Prada is a film many people will want to honor somehow.

But my brain says Dreamgirls will take this fairly easily. I want to predict Field for the upset, but that large and loyal Dreamgirls voting block will be voting for it here, where the dissenters will be split between Prada and other films. But Prada definitely has an edge in being the "hip" nominee that's all about the clothes, and being a big hit, so it's possible, especially if Dreamgirls is losing as much steam as some think.

And WHY ever did the CDG pick The Queen or Prada for best contemporary? Cause it's a best pic nominee? That is really disappointing.

*I meant to type "The Queen OVER Prada obviously.

Doesn't this seem like the easiest place to honor The Devil Wears Prada? Meryl Streep won't win, it was a movie built around costumes, so I view this race as even, yes, but with a tip towards Prada. Dreamgirls, I think, will be honored elsewhere, and voters will know that.

But what do I know?

To wear? Prada, obviously!

I think Dreamgirls appears to have the edge, but I have a sneaky feeling The Queen isn't completely out of this one...

This race makes me sad.

Marie Antoinette would have the historical drama vote if it wasn't a modernized retelling/not based in all history. Dreamgirls dies have the muscial and flashy votes, obviously, but The Devil Wears Prada is a film that most people has seen in this category, and it's all not that bad. And I didn't think The Queen was all that, so...

I rated this the Third most up-in-the-air race after Editing and Score, but this is incredibly tight. My vote would go to Marie, but how much of the Academy will agree?

My brain hurts.

I think Dreamgirls is the obvious place to put money, but my heart is with Prada, mostly because I was impressed when Streep said "The costumes are our special effects." It was a smart remark and very true, and 100% of why those costumes matter more than the others.

Hi Deborah!

great quote from Streep there and agreed that Prada relies on its costumes more than most of the films.

Thing is, we really can't begrudge Dreamgirls winning if it does.
