Sad news. Australian costumer designer Marit Allen died this week. She's the woman who brought you those shirts hanging famously, one inside the other, in Brokeback Mountain as well as that black sheath that the nude backside of Nicole Kidman slipped into in Eyes Wide Shut. I haven't updated my costume design shrines in a long while but I did do a Marit Allen tribute page in 2005, my tiny way of honoring a fine designer that AMPAS never recognized. This year Marit designed the costumes in both Love in the Time of Cholera (now playing) and La Vie En Rose (now on DVD)related: Oscar 2007 Costume Design page

Very sad. What a respectable and diverse body of work. She will be missed.
It was nice that her work got one hell of a showcase back in fall 2006 when Focus Features joined with the Human Rights Campaign to launch their “Brokeback Mountain” wardrobe auction on Ebay.
Verry sad news. I hope she'll receive an Oscar nomination-and ever an prize- for the wardrobe of "La vie en rose" or/and "Love in the time of cholera". Like Peter Finch for acting or Conrad L. Hall, an special recognition for all her work...
Marit Allen was half Norweigan, half English. She was born in Cheshire... She wasn't Australian. She was based in the UK and was working on a film in Australia when she died suddenly.
