Breakfast With... Andy Sachs

Cup of coffee. Onion bagel with cream cheese. To go.

It's unclear if she chews but there's definitely some inhaling going on. This, the movie tells us, is the breakfast of "smart, fat girls*" Andy hasn't yet learned that she should be counting almonds or nibbling on a cube of cheese or seeking a stomach flu.

*As comically deranged as it is to call Anne Hathaway a "smart fat girl" aren't we glad that the movies took a chance on her? [Hathaway for the win!]

nice comment. except for the last sentence :P

MERYL! MERYL! MERYL!

[and yes, I've seen Rachel... I HATE Jenny Lumet for not doing justice to Debra Winger! underwritten like hell]

Okay, let me get this straight. Kate can finally get her hands on an oscar, and you still want it to go to an actress whose last film was Bride Wars. Okay ... I get that you prefer her performance (which I think is rather crazy since la Hathaway is in no way as versatile as la Winslet), but it's just wrong to root for newbie Hathaway when veteran Kate can finally get one. You just know Kate's performances can never live up to her previous level of greatness, so suck it up and start rooting for Kate, mkay ?!!!!

If we're doing the whole French thing, shouldn't it be L'athaway?

Jackie & Alex... i'm just telling it like it is (this year). i'm not sure I'm actually rooting for Hathaway to win (given the Oscar curse that could fall on her) but I think it's the best performance nominated.

I'll be thrilled for Kate when she wins, don't worry. Been waiting for it ever since Heavenly F***ing Creatures, people!

I can't wait till lunch. I hear they're having corn chowder.

Did you know that cellulite is one of the main ingredients in corn chowder?

Hey Nat, a little off-topic, but are there going to be anymore FBA nominees announced soon? I'm dying to see the cameo categories (always my favorites)!

Let's clear something up: Melissa Leo is the best of the nominees.

Though, Hathaway is a close runner up.

I'm with Nat. I'm super excited to see Kate finally win, but Hathaway's is the finest best actress perf. nominated. Hathaway has said herself that she may never get a role like this again. And, what a surprise it was! I never expected something so raw and human. I was blown away by her (and her movie)

p.s. i can't wait for DEVIL WEARS PRADA PART DEUX aka CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC.
i love amy adams...that's isla fisher? so, she was the one in TALLADEGA NIGHTS?
that was amy adams?
so amy adams was the one in WEDDING CRASHERS then, right?
THAT was isla fisher?
huh.
are we sure they aren't the same person? has anyone actually seen them both in a room at the same time? and if so, which one is the evil twin?

John T... SOON. I'm having some time management issues as you've probably guessed.

plus, i'm sorta stumped on those categories.

Speaking of Winners... When are you gonna pass out the FB medals? Or even the rest of the nominations for that matter?

Anonymous said...

Wow. I should read the rest of the posts before making my own snotty one. Ignore me.

abstew...we must be long lost soulmates...that what I was thinking!
LOL

actually, qualitywise, IMO Anne is my runner-up, after Meryl.

but let Kate get it... fine with me... poor Meryl :(

If you're stumped, then FYC...

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL (in the following remaining categories)

Kristen Bell and/or Mila Kunis for Sexpot of the Year... Jason Segel is a lucky man to have those two young ladies fight over him.

"Dracula's Lament" and/or "Peter You Suck!" for Best Musical Sequence in a Non-Musical Film. Are there two funnier musical sequences in film this year? I think not.

Jason Segel and Mila Kunis for Best Kiss

The Sex Battle. Kristen Bell v. Jason Segel and Mila Kunis for Best Love/Sex Scene. Hilarious.

Second Best Movie of the Year, IMO. Sweet, hilarious, honest. I was hoping for a Breakthrough Nomination for Jason Segel, but alas, he fell short. Best Actor for me this year, although I haven't seen Milk or Wrestler. But he's definitely better than Brad Pitt's makeup and Frank Langella's Nixon.

Isn't it hilarious when people refer to a 33 year-old actress as a "veteran"?

I mean, I get that Winslet has been around for a few years now, but still -- poor choice of word.

"Rachel Getting Married" HAS FINALLY come to the independent theatre here in my city and I can finally go see what all the buzz is about! (Guess I have Hathaway's B.A. nom to thank for that) Coming from a big dramatic family myself a movie that deals with REAL family relations is always interesting.

Speaking of Kate, any chance you can update the wins for her on the actress page with the Bafta and Chicago film critic award?

Kate Winslet could easily play Kym, brilliantly. She definatly could, and it would be amazing.

Anne Hathaway couldn´t play Hannah (or April) if her life depended on it.

NATHANIEL R said...

ah but Anne wasn't playing Hanna or April (both of which she's too young for anyway) but she was playing Kym. And brilliantly at that.

let's give her another 5 or 6 years before we see whether or not she can play disillusioned married women.

Marshall said...

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL was great indeed. I probably didn't like it as much as our friend above, but it's my favorite film so far from the Apatow machine. Dracula's Lament should have a Best Original Song nomination.

E Dot said...

If Kym was here and saw how some of you are slandering her name (and performance) she'd slap you like she did her mother.

Colin Low said...

What does winning an acting Oscar have to do with your versatility, anyway? Isn't the point that you get one for a great performance, period (or shouldn't that be the ideal, politics be damned)?

Also, bullshit on "Kate's performances never living up to her previous level of greatness", because as recently as five years ago she surpassed a ten-year career's worth of performances with Eternal Sunshine.

Cluster Funk said...

Right on, Colin! How unfair is it to award an Oscar to somebody who's "due" when somebody else gave the better performance. Let's give it to whoever deserved it THIS year and forget what's happened -- or who's been unrewarded -- in the past.

speaking about forgetting Sarah Marshall, what about Mila Kunis' "I can see your vagina from here!" as best individual line reading or something? One of the funniest lines of the year IMO, but I think I'm alone in this one.

Glenn said...

JackieBoy, Anne has Bride Wars and Kate has The Holiday. Nobody's a saint.

aclp said...

Nathaniel, I agree with you that Anne is too young to play both Hannah and April. But if you compare both actresses´body of work at the age of 26, you´ll see that Kate already had a much stronger body of work and a much more solid career back then than Anne has at this point.

At the age of 26, Kate already had Heavenly Creatures, Sense and Sensibility, Jude, Titanic, Hamlet, Holy Smoke and Iris under her belt.

I do think Hannah is a much more complex role (and much more difficult, technically speaking) than Kym.

I think other young actresses such as Michelle Williams, Evan Rachel Wood, Cristina Ricci, Sarah Poley, Maggie Gylenhaal could have played Kym just as well.

I dont think Anne´s performance is bad. Far from it. I just dont get why people are so hysterical over it. I dont get the fuss. If you read some of the reviews out there, you´d think she ís the greatest shakespearean actress who has ever lived and who is reinventing the concept of acting.

Her performance is very good. Is it Meryl Streep´s Sophie or Helen Mirren´s Queen good? I dont think so.

Is it the best of the year? Not in my humble opinion. Very good performance? Yes. THE single best? No.

Amanda, I think that Michelle Williams, Christina Ricci, Sarah Polley and Maggie Gyllenhaal are all too old for Kym. The one I would fantasy-cast as Kym is Hathaway's "Devil Wears Prade" co-star EMILY BLUNT. She's the right age, gorgeous and has definite skills to take the role on.
