April Showers at the Bates Motel

april showers, weeknights at 11:00

Today I was going to write about what might be the most famous scene in cinema, or at least one of the most written about. I chickened out.

(If there's a shower scene you'd love to see covered in this series, I'm open to requests)

the shower scene in paranoid park was a good one.

Well, there's Monroe in the shower in Niagara...Hugh Jackman in Australia...and Sissy Spacek in Carrie...and Brad Davis in Midnight Express...

The shower scene that scared me to my very core was from 'IT'. After seeing that, I couldn't take a shower for about a week.

That shower scene from THE GRUDGE where the hand comes out of Sarah Michelle Gellers head is pretty freaky, but nothing holds a candle to PSYCHO!

Ok, then again there is the shower scene from EASTERN PROMISES, that was brilliant.

And, oh my favorite shower scene of all time is from SCHOOL TIES!

Mysterious Skin has a pretty memorable/horrible shower scene.

I don't know if you can count this as a "shower":

Warning: not safe for work. Well, not for all audiences, in general.

It's watersports scene from Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón.

BTW, and related to another post, maybe John Waters should ask for financing help to Almodóvar's El Deseo. As a way to acknowledge his influence on his earlier works, at least.

Yikes. I'd forgotten about Mysterious Skin.

How about MASH? Or blue-faced Eileen Brennan in Private Benjamin?

Dressed to Kill
Psycho (1998)
most Bond movies have a shower scene, as I recall.

do waterfall scenes count?

Nat, I recall that you mentioned that you had the DVD of Rocco and His Brothers. Have you seen that yet? I'm hoping you'll write something about that film, which has a pretty interesting shower scene. That picture you had a couple of weeks ago of a dripping wet (and gorgeous) Takeshi Kaneshiro brought that scene to mind, oddly enough.

I think we spent a week on the shower scene in my Hitchcock class in college and it felt like we could have gone on talking.

Does the Jackman scene from Australia count? I think it merits, at least, a frame-by-frame screen cap phantasmagoria. Please?

I always liked Matthew Broderick's little b@%ch fit in the shower during "Election". "Can I have an A? Can I? Can I?" and for aesthetic reasons, Christian Bale "American Psycho"

Paranoid Park is a great suggestion because it reflects how I view showers mostly, encapsulating complete detachment from the world. Showering is a very relaxing and alienating experience. A hot shower, that is, because cold showers have the opposite effect.

And, to tie in Gus van Sant, you could have provided a brief, comparative analysis of the shower scene in Hitchcock and van Sant's Psycho. There's some playful postmodern theory to dig up within the construction and art direction of the scenes.

This is a great series, too, since there is a variety of iconic shower scenes in films. I'm not so hot on the film but perhaps you can feature Kevin Spacey's "best part of the day" in American Beauty.

Speaking of Van Sant, why not the shower scene in Elephant? I think it is a fundamental scene in that movie.

A bad shower scene: Kevin Bacon's full monty in Wild Things. Not because I'm prude straight guy, but because that scene is all about the most gratuitous nudity ever seen.

What about Memento?

I think there needs to be more fight/shower scene combos.

Preferably with Guy Pierce.

Don't forget about Barry Levinson vs. a showering Mel Brooks in High Anxiety.
