What was the last movie that you watched...

.
... on an airplane?

It's JA from MNPP asking this while Nat is presumably still on an airplane, and while I'm thinking about my first trans-Atlantic flight which I'll be taking in a few weeks. I'm scared! I've never been on a plane for longer than three or four hours before, and now we're talking about close to nine! I'm going to have to stock up on lots of movies I think. I should probably avoid titles like Alive, Final Destination, and Fearless though, right?

A second question that that brings to mind: What's the scariest plane crash you've ever seen on film? I think the ones I named above are all pretty amazing, but I always hold a special place in my heart for that sudden imagined mid-air collision in Fight Club. Scary!

Um... safe travels, Nat! ;-)

Cast Away has the scariest plane crash for me. plane crash + water= doom. The last movie was Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Also related to crashing and burning? I'll let you decide.

Went to Paris last month and watched Australia on the way back. I don't know if it was the jet lag or the shitty airplane food, but I liked it in that weird, campy, laugh-at-the-dramatic-parts kind of way.

I particularly enjoyed the fact that Nicole Kidman's character moved in with a guy whose name she didn't even know. I mean, if I have a phone number from some guy whose name I don't know (bardude1) in my cell phone, I delete it the next (sober) morning.

Gosh. It was about 3-4 years ago since I got on a plane. I can hardly remember. Walk the Line? Maybe? I don't know.

BUT I'll be going trans-Atlantic on Monday. Can't wait!

I'm convinced that the only films ever shown on airplanes--when you don't have an option--are star-studded romantic comedies or unimaginative family films. They're genres that won't be dwarfed from the small screen (since they're already completely vapid, watered down and devoid of any true cinematic flair) and appeal to the widest audience--and lowest intellectual denominator. After I saw Hitch on a plane roughly two years ago, the only commentary I could possibly say about it was: "It's the perfect public transportation film." Yeah, it's awful.

Roughly a year ago, returning to Boston from San Francisco, I was greeted to the first 30 minutes of August Rush. Thankfully, I had enjoyed a bloody mary and at least four long island ice teas before boarding the flight. My friend and I spent those 30 minutes mocking the film--oh, it was so easy--and then promptly passed out on one another. Wonderful flight.

On a flight from NY to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, I watched Waitress. I was rather surprised I had enjoyed it, because I never had been interested in watching the film when it was first released, and the airline wasn;t offereing anything else to watch...

And I have to agree, the crash scene in Cast Away completely stopped my heart in fear. It was so intense and realistic, and it kind of freaked me out about flying for a few months...

I can't remember. I usually fall asleep on the airplane or read a book.

I can never sleep on an airplane. That's why I watch all of the movies. The last one was a while back. Across The Universe. I watched it on my blu ray a couple of months later and I liked it a whole lot more. If Julie Taymor finds out people are watching her movies on airplanes she would die.

I saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire near the end of a excruciating ten hour flight from Sweden to California, and all the sitting (combined with the airplane food) had given me a stomach cramp that felt as if someone was stirring around my intestines with a stick. I disliked the movie, as I did the other Potters, but then again even Citizen Kane would have been hard to appreciate under those conditions.

As for the scariest plane crash, I have to go with United 93.

My last airplane movie was (luckily) Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Last movie I watched on a plane: "Cheaper By the Dozen 2," which I watched with the sound off because I was too cheap to purchase the headphones. I learned from this experience that it is easy to follow the plot of a lot of films even without hearing the dialogue, esp. when people are mugging like crazy.

Scariest crash: I agree with Mikadzuki. It doesn't get much more terrifying than United 93.

I just got back from Seattle last night. I watched the first 3 episodes of True Blood on the plane.

First thing I did when I got home was put the first season at the top of my netflix queue.

I hope you're going first class because 9 hours in cheap seats at the botton of the plane will be one of the longest and worst (if the the actual worst) hours of your life. Last time I spent that much time in air was a American Airlines NY-Brazil flight that took about 9 and half hours - that after I have spent about the same time waiting on the airport.
To make it even worst I had the third seat of the middle row, so I've spend all that squished between two strangers. And to make what was painfull unbearable they showed I am Legend, Enchanted (god bless Amy Adams and James Marsden, but that movie was ....) and something else such as bad that I simply cant remember.
Really hope you'll be luckier on your trip.

I've never seen a movie on a plane.

Scariest plane crash is the one in The Aviator. Absolutely horrifying.

Oh boy, "The Secret Life of Bees," a.k.a. "Fried Yellow Honeycombs." So generic, so uninspired, so sticky-sweet, so magical-black-folk-save-the-white-people. The highlight for me was Alicia Keys, the only non-actor in the movie.

Scariest plane crash? Though you don't see it crash, I gotta say "United 93." That whole movie was so visceral and profound. Go Greengrass.

Most recently watched - Quantum of Solace and In Bruges.

As to scariest crash, I don't think United 93 really counts (love it, though). I guess, maybe, Final Destination. I feel like I'm forgetting some good ones though.

I "saw" the movie "The American President". Had already seen it though, so I did not buy the headphones. Michael J. Fox sounds so much better that way. (And to think that character grew up to host ABC's "This Week"...David Brinkley must be spinning like an uncoupled gyro in his grave...)

I think I have to go with the first plane crash in "Die Hard II" - for no reason I can pin down, the scenario for that one spooks me more than any other I can remember.

I just went to Paris and I watched loads of movies on my tiny screen... sadly, none of them particularly good.

Mexico -> Paris
Madagascar 2 (D)
Brideshead Revisited (B-)
HSM 3 (B-)

Paris -> Mexico
Ghost Town (B)
Hellboy II (B-)

However, on my previous trip across the Atlantic in February I did watch Rachel getting married, The Visitor and Hallam Foe, so it was definetely more enjoyable :P

The Godfather and The Godfather II.

My flight: Los Angeles - Moscow

Mikadzuki, Christine, Pomme & Kurtis O - DITTO, "United 93" is the scariest plane crash. The last five minutes of the movie was one of the most strongest emotional reactions I've ever had watching a movie.

On my last flight it was Flash of Genius. BOR-ING!

hmmm...i haven't been on a plane long enough recently to see a full movie, but i do remember seeing ALW's The Phantom of the Opera on a flight returning in Spain. Even though i saw it before, i was just too happy to have a movie in English. Gerard Butler was a great Phantom in imo, but his "deformity" was just a really bad sunburn.

Scariest plane crash? i'm trying to think of one, but i do remember in Final Destination when Devon Sawa's character had his vision of the plane crashing where people are flying out and the whole plane bursts into flames and incinerates people on screen.

yikes.

The last time I was on a plane was 2 years ago, and that was the first time in about 12 years, but I watched a good bit of "Three Kings", which was of course old by then but it was still my first time seeing it. It was being broadcast on TNT, so hearing the repeated "[Forget] that [stuff]"s got a little tiresome, but it was enough to make me seek out the uncensored version once I got home.
And is it cheating to say "Temple of Doom" is my scariest plane crash, simply because most plane crashes don't eventually lead to seeing a guy's heart removed?

Patrick said...

Oh God, The Shaggy Dog. I walked out.

The airplane crash sequence in ALIVE is terrifying because of its realism. It doesn't hurt that it's based on a true story, the by now legendary Andes case. You literally see the plane being torn down mid-air as whole seats just fly away with the people on them. And then it gets even worse... but I don't want to be spoilerish.

Tim said...

Patrick...you walked out of the airplane??

Plane rides are the best way to see those films that you missed out on and just don't really care about b/c the plane atmosphere is NOT the best environment for movie viewing. On my way home from Rome a few weeks ago I managed to catch "Marley and Me" "Twilight" "Bolt" AND "High School Musical 3" - made the plane ride go that much faster.

Favorite movie crash would definitely be 'Almost Famous'...even though there's no actual crash. Such a good scene/movie/turbulence awesomeness.

Drillbit Taylor was the most recent movie I watched on an airplane.

Let us never speak of this again.

Well I've been on two 18hr flights in the past months and I managed to watch a few.

Melbourne -> LA
"Frost/Nixon"
"The Secret Life of Bees"
"Twilight" (the only 30 minutes of sleep I got on this flight was during this!)
"Elegy" (my favourite of the bunch)

LA -> New York
I actually managed to sleep on this one so no movies.

New York -> LA
"Bolt" (so anti-feline)

LA -> Melbourne
I was in business class for this flight (such are the delights of being ordered off a plane due to sickness and being put up in the Hilton for the night and then having to fly back by yourself. the airline takes care of you and upgrades you to business class!) so I got some sleep, but still managed to watch some movies.

"Last Chance Harvey"
"Easy Virtue" (hey look, Jessica Biel can sorta act decent)

I feel like I'm forgetting one though.

One of the oddest movies I could've selected to watch was, of all things, "Synecdoche New York". As much as I want to see that (it's not out here until May) I didn't think an airplane was the optimal place to watch a movie of that sort.

hey look, Jessica Biel can sorta act decentYes she can. *resists bringing out placards again*

The only flight longer than an hour I've ever been on was New York three years ago- on the way there I saw The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but on the way back the tv thing was broken and after about an hour and a half of trying to get them to sort it out I gave up and pretended to sleep because I was pissed off. Fun times.

As for scariest plane crash I would agree on The Aviator. Best scene of that movie by far.

The last movie that i watched on an airplane was My Best Friend's Wedding...that was 11 years ago.

Definitely United 93 for the scariness.

I'm afraid I can't remember the last movie I saw on a plane -- and it was just a month ago... (Just checked at the American webpage: It was The Day the Earth Stood Still -- no wonder I forgot.)

However, United says that the next one I will be seeing is InkHeart, so I can't wait. Seriously.

And a few days later on Lufthansa: Last Chance Harvey. Sure, I'll watch it again.

The Great Debaters on the flight from New York (Kennedy) to San Francisco. I actually liked the film.

Scariest plane crash is definitely United 93. But the Cast Away crash is a good second place choice.

Knowing, to me, has the scariest plane crash and train wreck shot - from what I've seen. That people screaming and getting set on fire... greatly done and real as hell.
