Ho Hum

With a relatively empty movie weekend ahead, are you catching up on something you missed or taking a break from moviegoing [gasp]? Share your plans in the comments. I'm going to my first Jewish wedding. Will it be anything like Yentl?

I did not get to see District 9 (whoops) so I'm going to get to that this weekend.

(500) days of summer finally came to my local theater this week so I'm gonna see that.

I'll be catching Inglourious Basterds tonight. Other than that I'm all caught up. :)

Hopefully I'll FINALLY be able to go see "Inglourious Basterds," I've been so busy with personal stuff that I've neglected QT's latest. :(

District 9 finally!

Antichrist is opening today in Brazil. Yaaaaaay!!!

Taking a break. Seeing Inglorious Basterds mid-week (to a sold out night show no less) elminated all the movies I needed to see. Going to a birthday party for my cousin.

Time Traveler's Wife worth seeing? Anyone? Bueller...? I'm reading the novel right now.

Definitely not seeing any new releases, if anything, I might go see Inglourious Basterds again.

Other than that, it's looking like a Netflix weekend -- I currently have American Beauty, Finding Neverland, and Manhattan Melodrama.

Haven't seen any of them...Which one should I watch first?

Hmmm, see "Basterds" again or pack it up and go home? I'm thinking the latter.

"Time Traveler's Wife" -- It was pretty skippable to me, but maybe you'll have more of an attachment to it b/c of the book. I was letdown by it without reading the book, so I'd guess that having read the book would only amplify that feeling. But Rachel McAdams looks gorgeous, and you see Eric Bana's bare ass a lot. It's your call . . .

I'm going to see if I can get anyone to go see 'The September Issue' with me.

My plans for the weekend are going to play board games for charity - http://www.playdateorlando.com

The Time Traveler's Wife - I read the book a few months ago and saw the movie last weekend. I knew the movie didn't get good reviews, but I was still disappointed by it. It's a watered-down version of the movie, with many of the characters absent and many of the plot points are glossed over or taken out altogether. Blah.

Empty? The new Final Destination is in 3D! This is an EVENT!!!

Hoping to see Ponyo.

are you seriously excited to see final destination?

Matt Mazur said...

I am eating Chinese food, not leaving my apartment and watching Carl Th. Dreyer films in a marathon. Very sad, yes, but hopefully fulfilling, all around!

Pivo said...

"i am officially jealous" = "estou oficialmente com inveja". Sorry, babe!

See Ponyo, everyone, it's wonderful. If you've never watched a Hiyao Miyzaki film, I think it's a good intro. I still have to see District 9, and then there's True Blood on Sunday....I'm all up for Evan Rachel Wood as a vampire queen.

Since the wife and I do not have any "Actress Psychic" contest updates to peruse, we will be going down nostalgia lane with "Taking Woodstock"...we are a lowbrow couple when it comes to cinematic tastes, we are.

On your earlier 'fill-in-the-blank' post: September 1st and The Film Experience website cannot return soon enough!

No, I'm done. I've watched 60+ movies this summer and it's about time I had a life again.

NATHANIEL R said...

glendon are you saying that movies ≠ life?

BLASPHEMY!

Henry said...

Hmm. I do have a full slate of Netflix for the weekend: Duplicity, Adventureland, and Sunshine Cleaning.

Seeing Taking Woodstock with friends tomorrow!

I am going to go and see The Final Destination ten times. I will not sleep, and I will only eat popcorn kernels left over on the floor and whatever is stuck to the bottom-side of my chair.

I just saw PONYO. It was just the thing after a double dose of Inglourious Basterds - which I loved. Among other things, the Ponyo score is wonderful. There's a piece which keeps all the thrills of "Ride of the Valkyries" and none of the menace.

@ Danny King: American Beauty, for sure. Great film with some absolutely unmissable performances (especially Kevin Spacey's).

Finding Neverland is good, but a bit bland for my taste. I was expecting so much more from a Depp-Winslet collaboration.

Haven't seen Manhattan Melodrama, myself. Wasn't that the one Dillinger watched just before he died?

Danny King said...

@ Rae Kasey:

Yes, I was intrigued by Manhattan Melodrama just after seeing Public Enemies.

I've definitely been anticipating American Beauty for a long time, I'll probably watch that one first. As for Finding Neverland, I'm mostly interested in Depp's performance, but we'll see.

Nathaniel, dont be jealous about the brazilian realease schedule: Its a mess. We always get the Von Trier's before america (Dogville opened in 2003 here, and Nicole even won Best Actress from the "Brazilian EW". But somethings never see the light: Frozen River opened today in my city. Yes, that Frozen River. Rachel Getting Married was avaiable on DVD when it get a theatrical run in my city - one of the main city of Brazil, outside Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo - witch are the LA and NY of Brazil, and the only cities were Antichrist is being released today.
John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus was screened (comercial run) here for the first time last year.
Up only opens in the middle of september.
Serously, don't get jealous at all. This kind of thing only happens once in a while, like Dogville, Pan's Labyrinth and Antichrist.
The Transformers, X-Mens and Harry Potter opens at the exact same time (actually X2 open here one day before), but usually its a long long wait for the films to arrive.
I remember seeing Far From Heaven in May of 2003, 2 months after the Oscar, and that I saw The Triplets of Belleville at the same day I saw Troy (it was opening day for both movies) and if I not wrong Troy was a June 2004 realease.
I could go on and on, so don't get jealous at all.

Victor S said...

And I forgot to mention that Lust, Caution opened in Brazil a month ago.

i'm watching dvds of house md, that's what

NATHANIEL R said...

Victor S... so much for "day and date". wow, that's just bizarre. I wonder how that works financially for studios to have to concentrate on publicity for the same movie over about 3 or 4 years rather than all at once. strange. i'll never understand hollywood as a business. never seems very efficient... especially when you consider how much some crappy looking movies cost even before they get to the marketing and distribution part of the budget.

john said...

I intend to watch Penny C in Borken Embraces which has just been released this Friday in the UK!

Anonymous said...

do people in Brazil even care about the oscars in America?

Victor S said...

Yes, some people in Brazil are Oscar-freaks as much as the Oscar-freaks of everywhere in the world.
Nathaniel, the distribution sistem here is kind of the same of the US: The Big Studios: Warner, Paramount, Sony, Disney and Fox, which big movies usually get simultaneous release here. The arthouse, oscar movies from the special divisions of these studios - Fox Searchlight, Paramount Vantage, Sony Classics, NEVER get a simultaneous release and sometimes are sold to smaller distributors.
You have to consider that the international distribution rights sometimes don't match, so crazy things like might happen.
Like Slumdog Millionaire, released right after the nominations in Brazil by a smaller distribudor. Its a crazy mess, but the costs with publicity only becomes a problem with the blockbusters, and those get a simultaneous release.
The others are simply released, without big TV spots, letting much of the publicity be made by the critics, BIG posters and folders at the entrance of the cinemas and word of mouth, which still counts a lot here.

We went to see Julie & Julia. The last 15 or 20 minutes sucked ass. I was going along for the ride - enjoying Meryl's Julia Child impression - when all of a sudden, WHAM! One little scene changed my entire opinion of a movie that I was enjoying for nearly two hours.

Also, Streep's Child was so exuberant and full of life on the big screen. The real Julia's personality was never that joyous on the various cooking shows in which she hosted over the years.

NATHANIEL R said...

Billy... which scene was this?

Billy Held An Oscar said...

Nathaniel R -

The scene were Julie finds out that Julia isn't very impressed and/or hates the project/blog. It lost me right there. It instantly changed my opinion of the film. I

Donny said...

Ditto. We're led to believe that Julia Child would of course support this like-minded foodie that was taking inspiration from her struggles in life to change her own. But instead, Child doesn't support the blog and doesn't want to talk or meet Julie at all. It deflates the ending of the film completely. I didn't care at all that Julie went to the museum with the replica of Julia's kitchen in it. It colors the film so negatively at the end. I've heard afterwards that that's how it was in real-life (and the film whitewashed Julie big time), but the script could have supported the shift better than it did so the change wouldn't have been as jarring as it was.

NATHANIEL R said...

Billy & Donny.

i gotcha. I had a bad reaction to that too. Not because it was sad (I'm totally ok with complicating happy films) but because it was so rushed and only alluded to to the point where it was very distracting because of course you want to know more.

you want to understand the the film includes it (undeveloped) ... why?
