Twelve years ago today A Thousand Acres premiered.
I love how incongruous this photoshoot was with the material it was promoting. Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange look like they're reliving their childhoods and they're just happy-go-lucky. Not so onscreen. They're all kinds of miserable in their tragic King Learish farm wives movie.
Lange is up for an EMMY tomorrow night for Grey Gardens [editors note: I'll be live-blogging. Be here!]. La Pfeiffer is also in comeback mode after a well deserved hit Hairspray and a probable Oscar campaign for Chéri. That said, "Comeback" is such a weird and misleading concept. It feels like these 80s superstars have always been with us. There's an ineffably endearing quality to that kind of longevity, don't you think?

This is the closest you've ever come to saying "endearing" and "Jessica Lange" at virtually the same time! I'm so happy, and so proud of you!
Pfiffer has no shot at a nomination.
oh anonymous... only 3 best actress competitors have even opened. let's not pretend we know anything yet... i can guarantee if you took a snapshot around the web of the best actress category in sept of each year it would be an abundance of misconceptions.
but yes, she's not looking like any kind of sure thing.
gorgeous pic - 2 of my faves
(*crosses fingers Pfeiffer doesn't go back into hiding)
Michelle Pffeier not only deserves nomination, deserves to win an Oscar for Cheri, for her legendary status and for her breathtaking talent¡¡
Oscar for Michelle¡¡
And it's not important if it has or not a shot at a nomination.
She deserves Oscar, this is the important thing
I think Pfeiffer still has a chance.
She has a better chance than ALL three of the young newbies getting nominated (Mulligan/Cornish/Sidibe).
Right now, it seems like they all could. But, odds are, it won't happen.
I think Michelle Pfeiffer will get in the shortlist alongside Streep, 2 out of these: Mulligan, Cornish, Ronan and Sidibe... and one out of these: Swank, Swinton and Gainsbourg...
I think it would be swell if the lineup ends up being: Mulligan, Pfeiffer, Ronan, Streep and Swinton...
but of course we have a long way to go yet...
I happen to think a 1,000 acres was mishandled and contains one of lange's best ever performances and although pfeiffer is nearly her equal, the way lange listens to pfeiffer's confession about being abused is definitely the best piece of acting fron her since frances and was a big shame that 97 was so competitive.
mr ripley -- it may surprise you to hear then that i thought Lange was best-in-show in 1000 Acres too (yes, above Pfeiffer). Breathe Nick, breathe.
that said... what an inert mess that movie is.
vatz at first i thought you were crazy to suggest her chances are better than the newbies but then I realize that you said "ALL" of the newbies. indicating that she has a better chance of getting nominated then the combination of all tree of them to which... hmmm, i might agree there.
jessica lange is one of the best actresses of all time and it's great to see her mentioned here. it is sad that she is rarely seen. i am hoping that she would once again be given a chance to star in movies that would exploit her acting prowess.
Jessica was nominated to the Golden Globe for best actrees in dramatic role for A Thousand Acress
haha I love how I threw you for a loop, nate. sorry to hear about the one hour of SVU torture. I think mulligan a lock. bright star will be good i'm sure, but not the piano. it will be cornish, sidibe or neither. if sidibe doesn't get a nom, I can't wait for all the hollywood is racist talk. the last time the academy nominated three newbies was 2005. but all three had extensive and/or box-office/ratings friendly tv/filmographies behind them. so did all three 2001 best actress newbies. they were all well established. a year ago, I only heard of cornish and had never seen her in anything. and all I knew was that she *may* have broken up the marriage of one of the 2005 newbies. what a small world hollywood is. vatz/vincent
