Which scene...

...in which movie made you laugh as hard as you've ever laughed at the movies. And then some. (Did you have to be there or is it just as funny now?)

The most recent: Borat

1) The scene with the dancing penis as climax.

2) In the camp where Borat says something about stars and men and everyone stays silent.

Dumb and Dumber:

The final scene where Carrey tells the girls that it's the other way. Anyway, I hope everyone remembers what I'm talking about.

Oh, I just recalled another one.

Jennifer's body (trailer): Am I too big?

I think you mean "Bruno".

No, I ment Brüno. :p

Thanks, I'm really sleepy.

For me it is the scene in Nutty Professor 2 where the dirty ol granma is running through the meadow with her boobs going all over the place.

What made me pee a little......... the fact that the fake tits had nipples - NIPPLES PPL !!!!

The first time I saw Blazing Saddles I was dying of laughter... Especially the final sequence:

"Where you headed, cowboy?"
-"Oh, Nowhere Special"
"Nowhere special? I always wanted to go there"

Don't ask me why, but it's one of the very few comedies that's just stuck. Most I laugh at once and never again.

I can't believe I'm about to admit this...

Mine comes from "Ernest Goes to Jail" where Ernest is a juror and he bites his pen in half. The ink is spilling into his mouth and all over his face, so he wipes up the ink with a piece of paper and shoves it in his mouth, chewing it loudly like a piece of cud.

Yes, I said "Ernest Goes to Jail." Yes that scene is still funny to me.

The scene in About a Boy where Hugh Grant comes over for Christmas dinner with Toni Collette's family. The grandmother sitting in the corner of the room had some really random lines to say (example: "Are we having duck? How delicious!" or "'Shake Ya Ass'...is he Moroccan?), but the way she said them with her stiff British accent made me and my friend crack up for literally five minutes straight. We rewound that scene at least four times and laughed just as hard each time.

NATHANIEL R said...

I laughed really hard at Brüno too. weird that the laughs didn't feel that satisfying though?

This is very odd but usually when i can't stop laughing at a movie it's almost always about something that's not really all that funny but seeing it with a friend and getting the giggles and you just can't stop laughing.

this decade i remember hurting from laughter during Wet Hot American Summer but i have such a terrible memory so i can't remember which scene.

and I Heart Huckabees. there were a couple of things but when Naomi Watts said "fuckabees!" i lost it.

It's towards the end of Arsenic and Old Lace where Cary Grant is just sitting on the trunk shaking his head and mugging. I weep.

I have to say Deuce Bigalow (don't judge...) the scene where he meets Amy Poheler's character, which is the first time I ever saw her... That scene with them in the car nearly killed me, I was crying, laughing, choking!!...haha, it was phenomonal.

Glendon said...

Not biggest laugh, but my ultimate "You had to be there" laughter is from Balls Of Fury in total deadpan:

Ping Pong... is not the macarena. It takes patience. She is like a fine, well-aged prostitute... it takes years to learn her tricks. She is cruel, laughs at you when you are naked, but you keep coming back for more, and more! Why? Because she is the only prostitute I can afford.

And also "I'm going to go save the panda" (10 seconds later) "the panda's dead"

I don't think I have ever laughed at a movie as hard as I did at the climax of Little Miss Sunshine. I was with a friend at the theater and we were absolutely losing it -- literally falling out of our seats.

I also watched Everything is Illuminated with a different friend after taking the SATs, and I remember dimly being completely mentally spent, and despite having both seen it before it reduced us to complete hysterics -- way more than it really should. We were just looped.

You hit the nail on the head. Bruno makes you laugh, but it's not laughing from release...it's tense laughter...and unsatisfying.

Right now, because Mean Girls is on my mind the biggest laughs I can remember is Gretchen's meltdown instigated by the Christmas show. From the line Stop trying to make fetch happen straight into her rant about Caesar then the hoop earrings. I just find it freakin' hilarious. Damn, Lacey Chebert is awesome.

Paul Outlaw said...

Hmmm...wow. It's definitely a scene with Catherine O'Hara. And it's either in Beetle Juice, For Your Consideration, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman or A Mighty Wind. Yeah, the morning after the Oscar nominations are announced in FYC when Fred Willard catches her (on camera) taking out the trash. Never gets old.

Do tv movies count? My friend and I randomly obtained the 80s version of Alice in Wonderland. When we got to the part with Carol Channing as the White Queen, we just about died from laughing. Such a strange scene.

Maybe you just had to be there, but I couldn't breathe for awhile after laughing so hard.

I love the movies where a series of ridiculous events build up to an even more ridiculous conclusion, so I remember laughing really, really hard at Meet the Parents.

And this movie is totally forgotten now, but I was weeping with joy by the end of Rat Race. Jon Lovitz busting into a Klan meeting accidentally dressed as Hitler? Amazing.

Several moments from Flying High! (aka Airplane) and Borat (I very nearly fell out of my seat at the cinema). I once saw Zoolander as the third film in a midight movie marathon and while I generally loathe the movie, the scene where Will Ferrell hypnotises Derek had me howling. And at 5am I was the only one in a 500 people cinema doing so.

Of course, I couldn't go past I'm The One That I Want and Notorious C.H.O.. They give me laughing pains every single time.

The final photo montage in THE HANGOVER had me crying.

The other would be Bill Murray trying to kill himself in GROUNDHOG DAY, and especially when he wakes up and smashes the clock.

Also, the first time I saw HIGH ANXIETY (Mel Brooks) was hysterically funny, but maybe you had to be there for that one.

The Incredibles

when Elastigirl goes to Edna's place and she's crying and Edna hits her with the newspaper... I'm laughin just by remember it.

Nathaniel: you must must revisit Wet Hot American Summer. The scene where Janeane Garofalo and Joe Lo Truglio completely destroy the infirmary in search of the phone made me fall out of my seat screaming with laughter. The rest of the movie is hysterical as well, but that scene just gets me every time.

Most recently, in "Bruno":

The scene in which Bruno and some silly celebutant whose name I can't remember discuss whether or not Jamie Lynn Spears should keep her baby given the look of the Ultra Sound images. "Keep it or abort it?" My cheeks were soaked in tears.

...and then came the montage with the screaming penis...

Hannah and Her Sisters.

Specifically when Woody Allen comes home and starts pulling religious items out of a grocery bag. There's a rosary, a bible, a picture of Jesus, and a loaf of wonder bread.

OMG, and "Fuckabees!" was/is such a side-splitting moment for me. I've popped in the DVD numerous times simply to watch that scene.

And, now that I'm thinking about my DVD library, Parker Posey's extended dog toy freakout in "Best in Show" is extraordinary. "A pet store down the stairs?!?! What are you, a wizard!?! A genius?!?!"

Ahh, love it.

Max: "The phone, the phone!! Where's the FUCKING phone?!!"

I'd have to go with something from Drop Dead Gorgeous. Either the anorexic winner from the previous year's pageant performing "Don't Cry Out Loud" from her wheelchair, Denise Richards dancing with a plush Jesus that is velcroed to a cross on wheels, or the Saint Paul Pork Products commercial.

I think the hardest I've laughed in a theater was either the farting scene at the dinner table from The Nutty Professor, or the Jerry Springer scene from the second Austin Powers movie.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

the scene where they're driving the wrong way on the freeway and they squeeze through the two mack trucks and steve martin momentarily sees john candy laughing hysterically while dressed as the devil. it's so awesome.

MrW said...

Two scenes are on my mind.

The first would be Jon Lovitz "speaking" in front of WW2-veterans in 'Rat Race' (still one of my favorite films for just laughing out loud), the other would be the finest slapstick scene ever filmed, Woody Allen and Diane Keaton hitting each other with a bottle over the head while actually trying to hit Don Francisco in 'Love and Death'.

This is in no order. A lot of scenes in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstien, especially the scene with Hackman as the blind man. Many parts in the first Airplane. Heck, every scene out does the other in that movie. Pee Wee Herman as the Hamburger Dude in Cheech and Chongs Nice Dreams. Also when Cheech meets Timothy Leary in the padded asylum. Some scenes from their Up In Smoke too. When the cop pulls them over and has been following their van with pot smoke coming out of the exhaust and he asks them if he can have a bite of Cheech's hotdog. Team America where the guy gets kicked out of the bar too drunk and the lady screams at him up in the window. Many scenes in that too. Me. Myself and Irene. Dumb and Dumber. Lately...The Hangover and Tropic Thunder. Original Bad New Bears many scenes with Tanner. When the kid gets hit in the nuts and the coach yells " Stretcher ! " And in the background you can hear someone say " A stretcher for his balls ? " Classic. And I have to admit when Jack goes bat sh*t crazy in The Shining there are some laugh out loud funny parts in that. " Wendy...you hurt my head real bad ", then deviously looks for her reaction. Many classic comic parts in that film too that probably aren't intended to be funny and are.

Movie Dude said...

Oh yes, the wrong way scene in PTA, and the farmer who says " ah don't worry about her she's tough, her first baby came out sideways, she didn't scream or nothin " I almost fell out of my chair. Lots of classics from John Hughes films particulary Ferris Bueller and Sixteen Candles.

Two scenes from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang:

Harry finds the corpse.

Harry has trouble with numbers.

Loathe to elaborate in case some people haven't seen it... but hopefully that's enough for those who have seen it to know what I'm talking about.

Also, more recently, (500) Days of Summer:

"She took a giant shit on my face. Literally."

"Literally?"

"Well, no, not literally. That's disgusting. What's wrong with you?"

Most I laughed at a film ever has to be "Uncle Fukka" in the South Park movie. It caught me totally off guard and once I started laughing the song was just relentless so it never lost momentum or got any less funny. Me and my brothers were literally in the aisle of the cinema unable to breathe because we were laughing so much. Granted, I was 13 years old, but I think the film still stands up.

Glenn said...

I didn't like Wet Hot American Summer. I'm not sure if it's an American thing though. Like, we don't have summer camps here so maybe I just don't "get" it.

And, yeah, Showgirls. "I've got towels" makes me howl to the moon.

Recently - table cloth trick in "You, the Living". It was freaking hilarious, and curiously enough, it's so funny because you know perfectly what's going to happen. I cried with laughter for a few minutes and I'm glad I watched it on DVD because I couldn't put myself together.
Other scenes I can think of are Ariadna Gil blowing into a trumpet whilst having sex with Jorge Sanz in "Belle epoque", or Marek Kondrat opening corn-flakes in Polish "Freak's day" (he won Polish Film Award in 2002, competing against Oscar-winner Adrien Brody - "The Pianist")

Oh, and the courtroom scene in "Bananas" when Woody cross-examines himself.

The one movie I literally fell on the floor laughing with (as did many others in a packed screening) was "This is Spinal Tap". I was out of control in so many scenes:

-choking on someone else's vomit...
-loudest being "11"..
-Stonehenge
-pickle in crotch

It still resonates. I am still laughing a generation later.

The fart in Step Brothers. Then especially Mary Steenburgen telling the guys that Richard Jenkins character heard about the fart and asking him if he couldn't hold it in. Scary primal laugh noises ensued.

The one scene that still gets me in the chest waxing scene "40 Year Old Virgin".

I have my regular laugh and then I get this loud hyena style laugh.

I had that same reaction when I saw it by myself and when I went on date to the same movie.

When my friend and I saw "Cabin Fever" in the theater she laughed herself to tears when the weird country kid yells 'pancakes', does a karate chop and chomps on the guy's hand.

5 scenes that came to mind(in no legitimate order):
-the jon lovitz hitler scene in rat race
-the dinner party scene in auntie mame
-the movie theatre entrance scene in the last dragon
-the hearse car chase in friday foster
-the brian boitano sequence in the south park movie

its hard to pick moments out of any of the major mel brooks movies (saddles, frankenstein, spaceballs, history) or airplane, so i had to obstain from choosing any over the others despite so much utterly hilarity

When I first watched Magnolia, my brother and I could not stop laughing when Julianne Moore repeatedly said "Shut the f*** up" Great scene and performance. I still chuckle whenever I think about it too much.

My brother and I also laughed during Girl With a Pearl Earring (we're kinda strange), when Colin Firth says "Drop it" to Scarlett when she's washing windows. I know it's a weird one, but her facial expression and the sound of the wet rag hitting the floor made us laugh soooo hard.

And most recently after rewatching Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. So much in that film makes me laugh hysterically, but I always loved how Candela thought everyone was the police at the door the best. Her delivery of "Ay, la policia" was perfection.

One of the most under-appreciated classic comedies is Tony Richardson's 'Tom Jones'. Hugh Griffith in particular (and Edith Evans) are hysterical. Apparently Hugh was actually drunk during the shoot which is probably what makes his scenes funny beyond belied. With Edith Evans its her accent which provides most of the comedic effect. I highly reccomend this movie to anyone. Gawd, its brilliant.

In "Airplane", there is a scene where someone is becoming hysterical, and is slapped by someone to 'snap him out of it'. When it doesn't work, someone takes over for him, then someone else...there is a line of people all the way to the back of the plane to take a whack at the guy, including this sweet old lady, queueing up with a revolver. As soon as I see her, I lose it. Every time. It never gets old for me.

There are two that immediately come to mind, one potentially controversial so I apologise in advance for appearing insensitive.

The scene where Malkovich enters his own head and sees everyone uttering his name as their solitary language, including the cabaret singer seductively crooning "Malkovich..." sent me into stitches. This wins the prize.

The close runner-up scene was in the Passion of the Christ where the little dwarf baby cradled by the devil slowly reveals itself from behind the Devil's veil. I actually missed the 10 minutes that followed due to hysterical fits of laughter, and had sore muscles the next day as though I'd been working my lats at the gym for two hours. I was not prepared for such a ludicrously staged attempt at representing evil. Good times.
