Well, whatever you do, however terrible, however hurtful, it all makes sense, doesn't it, in your head? You never meet anybody that thinks they're a bad person.
I may be in the minority on this, but I think 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' deserved Best Picture, Director, and Actor. It's really that good a film (and I know how awesome 1999 was for film)
What I love about this moment is how well it sums up the character of Dickie Greenleaf in one line - how casually cruel he is even as he's purposefully flirting with Tom. And Jude is just so so brilliant here. Matt too.
exactly. both of them were completely on target throughout the whole movie.
Even though Ripley is one hell of an opportunist, you can't help but feel sorry for him. that's what i love about the movie. you're totally on Ripley's side even though he's the "evil" one.
and Jude Law added loads of charisma and sex appeal to Dickie. I can't think of a movie where he's been better.
Such a flirt. This was Jude Law's best performances, IMO - at least that I've seen. Haven't been as impressed by him since (though he was quite good in "A.I.").
I saw Jude Law in Hamlet on Sunday and he was amazing. Completely revived my dormant love for him. Plus, despite his security details best efforts, he was super charming and generous with his time outside the theater.
This is my favorite Jude movie and performance, along with Cold Mountain. I've loved him in Gattaca, Wilde, Immortality, Huckabees, and Road to Perdition, to name a few, but Ripley and CM are at the top. This film was so beautiful, and the beauty of the setting such a contrast to the less-than-beautiful things that happened in the film. Jude and Matt worked beautifully together. I think this was Minghella's best effort, and he was robbed of awards. Very much robbed.
rosengji, I will be traveling to New York in October to see Jude as Hamlet! I'm so excited, it's hard to wait! From London to Denmark to NYC, most every comment/audience member response I've seen has been much the same as yours.
jude's dickie greenleaf was one of the most memorable screen performances...the beauty and talent of jude shown through. i have seen him in hamlet in london. absolutely breathtaking. so much so i'm flying to new york to see it again.
Jude Law gives nothing short of one of the greatest performances of all time here. He was natural, whilst his character was so carefulwith how he presented himself. He was sexy, disarming, pig headed, scumbag, but you still, like Tom, still wanted to be him. I could go on...
this contains the 3 best performances of the leads careers and blanchetts best support turn, paltrow of course was receiving a backlash in 99 and got no love for what is indeed one of her best roles, law will NEVER be this good again and why no 99 actor nom for damon!!!

mr ripley i am a big fan of the film. saw it twice in release (not common for me)
i think Jude deserved the Oscar but I'm not sure i can support nominations for Blanchett (spectacular-spectacular) and Damon (very good) if only because the year was so ridiculously genius in various acting categories if you know what i mean.

ah, Dickie. it's too easy to see why Tom loved you.
But seriously, this movie is high on my list of favorite films.
I love Robert Hamer's quote.

I loved Gwyneth in this movie as Marge...ha! I love that name.

Can a blogger get a shoutout for Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie Miles?

The bath scene is so arousing. Law makes straights go gay. I think I would have let him drown me with his firm butt.
euh! the original french movie was better.
