So much for stereotyping all online critics as fanboys. Good set of nominees this year, veering from the usual suspects in a couple of key ways that are rather interesting.
Like Avatar for Director, but not Picture. No acting nominations that seem like completely lazy voting -- i.e. no one is getting nominated strictly because they were cast in a musical or a Clint Eastwood picture. Though I guess one could argue that three acting nods for Inglourious Basterds might be the online equivalent of those default kind of choices.
But most of all it's nice to see some critics group finally wising up about Tilda Swinton in Julia. I'm so proud of the OFCS today that I'm wishing I was a member but I have sadly never applied.

Ohhh...I would be so happy if that Best Actress lineup matched the Oscars! But maybe throw out Meryl (SORRY!) for Abbie Cornish. This is the best list I've seen all season.
That is five nominations too many for Up in the Air. I'd have liked to see those nods going to Viggo or Holbrook, Cotillard & Morton, and Precious. But anyway...
These guys get extra points for nominating Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor Two Lovers. He was so good in that movie. I wish he would get an Oscar nomination, but for many reasons that ain't gonna happen.
well this sure doesnt hurt inglourious basterds chances now does it? if laurent can enter the race ill be happy
even the online critics society, whose lineup in most categories is really respectable, failed to recognize how great samantha morton was in the messenger.
*sigh*
alison, i agree. i'm so happy somebody noticed finally how good he is.
Best Actor is pretty inspired with Sharlto Copley and Joaquin Phoenix inclusions.
Also loving the District 9 love. I really hope this film gets some Oscar love.
'Julia' is available on Netflix and can be watched online. How fantastic !!!
I LOVE that Best Actress line-up. Right now, that's who'd be on my ballot. Finally watched JULIA today and was simply blown away. Also nice to see Peter Capaldi show up.
Too bad the academy will replace Swinton with the weak performance of Bullock in The Blind Side (I guess box office really matters)...
Finally some recognition for Anthony Mackie! I'm stoked.
YES!!!! TILDA!!!!!
This is a great set of nominees!
Happy to see the prevalence of The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man and District 9.
Tilda!
Oh gosh she blew me away in Julia. FINALLY someone's taking notice...and Melanie Laurent was BRILLIANCE in Inglourious Basterds. :D
Tilda! That's pretty much all that matters. I think the world would implode if she somehow got nominated for Oscar, but just imagine...
I don't think it is really that far fetched Tilda could be nominated. She definitely has a chance.
Best nominations I've seen: Tilda, Joaquin, and Anthony Mackie. Three I would love love love to see get in.
As an OFCS member (sh! don't tell them I showed up here), I want to be proud and smug about Tilda Swinton, although for the most part I disagree rather badly with what we picked. Too much Up in the Air and District 9 for me, and I think Cinematography is a fucking joke.
Tim: so this is where we can come off to let off some steam? :)
VERY happy for Tilda. VERY disappointed about Firth. It's also a shame that neither The White Ribbon or Harry Potter could find their way into Cinematography.
*come, rather than come off, and here's my name for good measure (didn't expect a bunch of numbers to show up).
william... maybe it's a coded sign about the end of the world.. like in KNOWING. (eep)
tim... i didn't look at cinematography. Now, I'm scared to look. but i shall. right. now.
ok. i've just looked and it is kind of embarrassing. at first i thought hte lists were cool. but now digging deeper it does look like only 6 or 7 movies exist. and they're all "boy" movies... even in cinematography.
i mean A SERIOUS MAN and DISTRICT 9 for cinematography?
over BRIGHT STAR and WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE and god knows what else.
