Heroics and Dastardly Deeds, Circa 2009

I should be finished wrapping up the unfortunately delayed FiLM BiTCH Awards for 2009 in the next few days. (This past spring roughed me up... ouch. Coming back to life now). But while I knock off the rest of the categories backstage enjoy the finalized nominations for Best Cameos/Limited Roles (with gold medals for Carrie Preston and Robert Duvall) and Best Hero, Best Villain.

Which do-gooder would you call on if you needed rescue and which villains do you most love to hate?

I think you may have forgotten about Lynton Barwick from In the Loop for Best Villain. Implicitly, he is the cause of In the Loop's version of the Iraq...anyone of these mad libs: War/Quagmire/Oil Raid.

Your winners for Limited/Cameo roles are both nominees on my lists. If it weren't for Mo'Nique and Waltz, I'd probably have given Keener and Duvall the wins, too. Stunning limited performances.

And the obvious choice for rescuing hero is Coraline. She's smart, sarcastic, and has awesome blue hair. Other Mother may be my inspiration here, but she ain't got nothing on The Fabrication Machine. How many of those cute little sack toys does it kill over the course of the film? More than I care to remember.

Waltz and Mo'Nique are limited for you? Then, the supporting categories are who?

Best Cameo Actor/Actress: I agree.

Best Hero: Anyone but Jake Sully, please...he's a cliche.

Best Villain: Loved the inclusion of Lamia.

Fabrication Machine from 9 stunk. All it did was kill 5 puppets.

But the other 4 are great.

Yeah, maybe Jake Sully out and Rockwell in Moon in. What was that movie but a 90 minute hero's origin? As well, I would add Anti-Heroes to the fun mix every year. There's enough cinema about anti-heroes to justify such a category. (In the Loop's a parade of them (George Miller's masochistic bravery, Toby's "stop the war" affair, Malcolm's incessant profanity and anger), but Observe and Report would be, I think, the blatant winner for Best Anti-Hero if you decided to hand out that prize. That no one nominated Rogen for actor in a comedy is natural, yet sad (ungimmicky dark comedy turns never get much attention, even in retrospect.))

That is, if I actually had a blog.

anon 6:45 -- clearly i have gone senile as she's only one of my favorite young actresses in the world. have fixed.

anon 10:12 -- judging on many comments I'd received this year, I'm guessing i'm in the minority about The Messenger but I wasn't wowed by any of the individual notification scenes, especially not Buscemi's which struck me as too much of an acting exercize. Those scenes only got to me collectively. I was much more entranced with the central three characters.

volvagia -- i thought Rogen was pretty terrific in Observe and Report so if i had a golden globes type ballot i would maybe have voted for him in comedy.

The Other Mother all the way for best villain. I've never gotten the Teri Hatcher hype (particularly on Desperate Housewives) but she's excellent her. "Is that any way to talk to your mother?"

I was particularly enamoured with Charlize in The Road. I don't if it was just me, but it was one of my favourite supporting performances form last year (limited or otherwise). (so obviously, Viggo for hero of the year)

(Off topic, but oh my, wasn't Meryl Streep something special in The Fantastic Mr. Fox...if I was going on line readings her "We die, unless you change." always makes me lose it, and she gives the best reading of the "I'm pregnant line" ever. Weird that my favourite performance of hers since The Hours was just her voice...)

If we gonna start on Mrs. Fox line readings nothing can beat "If what I think is happening is happening - it better not be."
