Overheard (Grown Ups Buyer's Remorse)

What did you see over the weekend?

Do tell.
Strangely, I went movieless.

Well, except for that weird couple of hours where I accidentally left the TV on and kept hearing and glimpsing an absohideous Rob Schneider "movie" (not to be confused with brillz Roy Scheider!) in the background. Something involving him having animal parts.

I bring this up because:

a) This same weekend, whilst innocently waiting for my bestie in the lobby of a theater -- airconditioning. we weren't seeing a movie but Gay Pride bar hopping -- I experienced the horror of a grown gay man telling complete strangers that he had just bought a ticket to Grown-Ups (also starring Schneider)
"Yes, I know it will be stupid.

Maybe I should have bought a ticket for the Joan Rivers documentary instead?"
Ya think?

b) I am hoping to create a false replacement memory by retrovicariously enjoying your movie weekend instead. Help me! How was it?

Saw Toy Story 3. Had a good cry at the movies and a wonderful night out with friends afterward. Very cathartic.

Watched Glourious 39 on a bus to Boston. It was beautiful, but could have used some editing and an ending that made sense.

I was away on vacation, but last night when I finally got home I watched Pat and Mike.

Sticky and Sweet Tour DVD! I'd love to see a Film Experience grade/review/post about it. So many remarkable moments.

Me and the boyfriend saw two movies this weekend: I Am Love on friday and Toy Story 3 on sunday.

Both were very excellent.

You ever getting back to the charts?

And I saw Bright Star and Sixteen Candles,

Bright Star was very beautiful and well made but a bit too long, I'd still say 3/4

Sixteen Candles is just a really weird movie...

timothy -- yeah, that's a beautiful double.

I saw MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO for the first time. An absolutely mind-blowing experience.

I didn't see anything either, but I did get into a Goodfellas quoting marathon with my friend. This confused my girlfriend who, having not seen it, thought it was a serious crime film and the quotes had the two of us laughing like it was Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I watched Legion this weekend... Paul Bettany, Kevin Durand (Gabriel), and Lucas Black elevated the movie ...although the film wasn't a complete bust for me, I definitely would like to see a better film about badass angels...the ones with wings, not motorcycles.

A-Team at the cinema. Mindless and unexpected fun. Was amazed at the number of 'money-shot'/'close-ups' of Liam Neeson. Can't say that I was complaining.

I watched Lust, Caution and Casino, both for the first time.

Tang Wei...breathtaking.

Sharon Stone...I'm currently still of about 5 minds about her performance. Everything in her scenes seems tipped in her...focus("favor" seems like the wrong word to use). I don't think I've seen another film performance that hinges so much on your knowledge of the performer's personality.

In a fit of Michael Jackson nostalgia watched The Wiz the weekend. The costume and set design were fun and it held up surprisingly well.

Just a minute ago Charlotte Rampling flashed me: insta-watching The Swimming Pool in the background. With all these breasts flashing about, it's a good thing the job has central air or I might blow a circuit.

Was about to post my wonderful double header, but saw that my silly boyfriend Timothy already posted it! It was really really good.

wait boyfriends reading my blog separately? awwwww. how sweet. may you have many more extravagantly good double features together.

i saw the Joan River doc Friday and the Michael Jackson doc This Is It. The first was an insightful portrait of a complex, fascinating woman. The second was a horrible (and incompetently assembled) exploitation of a complex, fascinating man's death. Or, as my friend said when it was over, "Worst zombie movie ever!"

I went to go see Knight and Day and was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was.

Side story: Most of my friends went to go see Grown Ups (even though I told them it would be bad) and they thought it was horrible. I felt bad for them but when you don't heed good advice...lol

Josh -- re: your friends critique. OUCH. I am so glad that didn't get that weird BP nom some were predicting.

I saw Splice on Friday....possibly the worst movie I've ever seen.

So completely over the top and unintentionally hilarious and cringe-worthy at the same time.

Natali is officially a hack, if Cube didn't prove it enough.

Saw The Sweet Hereafter this weekend. It's an ensemble, through and through. Ian Holm was best in show, humanising his ridiculously see-through and poorly written character and, also, had the largest role, but was not a lead. As well, this cake had no flour. (If you want a non-linear story, some kind of frame makes it easier to digest the good elements and ignore the bad.) I was expecting to bite into a well baked item, but only managed to bite my tongue through the pudding.

This is going to be the summer we remember as the one where we never went to the movies. Wide releases that have been worth seeing have been very thin on the ground.

Catching up with TV, however -- I now love "In Plain Sight". I admire and respect Mary McCormack, and to copy the bar chart at the top of the Flick Filosopher site, Frederick Weller is my latest crush.

But this week there's Wimbledon!

adri -- frederick weller is definitely crushworthy

I saw Toy Story 3, too. Everybody in the theater was in tears, myself included -- and I never cry about anything, especially not movies, no matter how much I love them (Brokeback Mountain excluded -- the music alone makes me bawl). I want to see it again to make up my mind about it, though: something about the tonal shifts were a little jarring to me. But regardless: I laughed, I cried. That's certainly a sign of a film's success...

Saw Winter`s Bone, which I think is my favourite movie of the year thus far. I was going to see Cyrus too, but it was only playing at one time, very early in the morning, at a theatre two bus rides away. I had lofty ambitions to get up early and go see it anyway. That didn`t really pan out.
