Overheard (Grown Ups Buyer's Remorse)

What did you see over the weekend?

Do tell.
Strangely, I went movieless.

Well, except for that weird couple of hours where I accidentally left the TV on and kept hearing and glimpsing an absohideous Rob Schneider "movie" (not to be confused with brillz Roy Scheider!) in the background. Something involving him having animal parts.

I bring this up because:

a) This same weekend, whilst innocently waiting for my bestie in the lobby of a theater -- airconditioning. we weren't seeing a movie but Gay Pride bar hopping -- I experienced the horror of a grown gay man telling complete strangers that he had just bought a ticket to Grown-Ups (also starring Schneider)
"Yes, I know it will be stupid.

Maybe I should have bought a ticket for the Joan Rivers documentary instead?"
Ya think?

b) I am hoping to create a false replacement memory by retrovicariously enjoying your movie weekend instead. Help me! How was it?

"I Heard of It" The Pull of The Familiar

Year after year I continue to be stunned by the near omnipotence of familiarity when it comes to ticket purchasing. With so much media noise about "what's good" in the form of blogs, reviews, articles, and whatnot, it's still nearly always marketing dollars and pre-established "names" that determine what people spend their money on. Even when people didn't like one movie in a franchise, they'll go again. I've previously referred to this as The Blockbuster Loop.

Actual conversation overheard in an elevator last weekend:
Movieless Woman: What's that?
Bootleg Loving Woman: [Holding a bootleg DVD of Prince of Persia] It's good.
Movieless: [Pointing at Jake Gyllenhaal] Who's that?
Bootleg: The Prince! It's good.
Movieless: You watched it already?
Bootleg: No, we watching it tonight. It's good.
Movieless: How do you know?
Bootleg: [exasperated] I heard of it.
Movieless: [pause] I wanna see that Robin Hood.
The conversation continued briefly after this. "Movieless" had not heard of Prince of Persia (or Jakey apparently). So "Bootleg" turned to me (!), the complete stranger eavesdropping, for backup. "It's good, right???"

Reader, I just smiled and shrugged my shoulders, feigning ignorance. That's what's called a leading question and I don't think she was looking for critical discourse.

What struck me most about the conversation was the equation of "heard of" = "good." Even Movieless, deprived all of these years of Jake Gyllenhaal, confirmed this. Hadn't heard of equalled skeptical. She wanted to see Robin Hood; "Heard of" = "Good". Everyone has heard of Robin Hood. Therefore Good. That's how it works. Honestly, have you ever met anyone who loves that movie? How did it do so well? It wasn't word of mouth. It was the 'I heard of it' [sic] factor.

Top Ten of 2010 Thus Far
  1. Alice in Wonderland [heard of it x all living things + Johnny Depp]
  2. Iron Man 2 [heard of it x everyone who was conscious during Summer 2008]
  3. How to Train Your Dragon
  4. Shrek Forever After [heard of it x past nine years]
  5. Clash of the Titans [remake + 3D fad + hey, it's jakesully]
  6. Shutter Island [heard of x Leonardo DiCaprio + hit book]
  7. Valentine's Day [heard of x at least a few of the cast members]
  8. Date Night [heard of x two mega small screen stars]
  9. The Book of Eli [heard of x Denzel Washington]
  10. Robin Hood [heard of it x all living things + Russell Crowe]
Just about the only arguable exception here is How To Train Your Dragon but even that is based on a hit children's book. Incidentally, of the top ten of the year so far it's the film that has had the slowest profit decline from week to week. It's now just 2 million away from becoming Dreamworks biggest animated feature outside of the Shrek franchise. So the "heard of it" factor is really about what it's about in a better world which is your classic garden variety Word of Mouth.

Some established brands, sequels, adaptations. B.O. rank for 2010 thus far

Once you fall a little further in the box office race, the familiarity begins to fade... a little, with more titles that aren't completely reliant on instant familiarity. But it's still an important factor. Consider the success of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. (While it's only earned $7 million here in the States, that's a huge fortune in the current climate for subtitled features where films are lucky to hit the million dollar mark. That's three times what Let The Right One In earned in its US run and that film seemed like a Word of Mouth sensation. It would have easily hit 8 figures a decade ago when audiences were so much more willing to see foreign films). The Girl... is of course based on an international best seller. It's hard to go a day on the subway without seeing someone reading it. Heard of it!

If I were a young filmmaker with a truly original voice, I'd be sorely tempted to "reinterpret" some famous story or adapt a minor success book. Perhaps pre-established familiarity with an original spin is the best way to maintain your creativity and get noticed?

Overheard (What's Your Movie-Going Frequency?)

Two men sitting near me at a Tribeca Film Festival screening with badges... a sign that you're generally seeing lots of films. Nevertheless, they seem to have very different ideas about what constitutes frequent moviegoing.

Guy #1: What was the last movie you saw in a theater?
Guy #2: Oh it was so long ago. [thinks for several beats.]
Guy #1: That long ago?
Guy #2: [suddenly remembering] Up in the Air!
Guy #1: [confused] That wasn't long ago.
Guy #2: Before Christmas! It was... it was good. Travelling as much as I do, it resonated.
I'm with Guy #2. That is way way too long without a trip to the theater. Four months? Yikes.

When were you last in a movie theater? Please don't say "Before Christmas." If you do, say ten Hail Meryls as penance and get thee to the multiplex.

Overheard: The Blind Side

I am terrible about eavesdropping when I hear a movie mentioned. Overheard in midtown Manhattan yesterday between two co-workers.
woman: Did you see The Blind Side? We rented it last night. Sandra Bullock was so good in it. Because of that accent.

Honestly, I had a lump in my throat from the beginning to the very end.

man: [earnestly] It really puts things into perspective.
Puts what into perspective!?! Jesus. That super rich people have easier lives than poor people?

I wouldn't hate that movie half as much if it would leave me alone but people are still talking about it. For this I suppose we must blame the Academy slightly and Jesse James most of all.

Wild Things Overheard at the Cinema

Earlier today Nick overheard some things at the Chicago Film Festival which had me LOLing. I can't really compete with those choice bits but I do love to eavesdrop at the cinema. Exiting Where the Wild Things Are last night, I heard the following:
Asian Girl to White Guy: Maybe I would have liked it better if it were in Chinese.
Um...

I have no idea what she meant by that either but it amused me. I tried to get closer for context -- yeah, I'm curious (aka annoying) like that -- but to no avail. Exiting the theater was mayhem.

But it reminded me of a hilarious / horrifying thing I overheard a couple months back. Those following my twitter feed will have already heard this but in the airport in August I witnessed the following exchange
Excited Guy #1: Hey, did you see District 9?
Less Excited Guy #2: Yeah.
Guy #1: Did you like it?
Guy #2: (long pause) It was good. But not good in that Independence Day way.
What's the last amusing or horrifying nugget you heard at the movie theater?

And while we're here, would you have liked Wild Things better in Chinese? (Although...who needs words really with that movie? Lance Acord, I love you!)

Overheard at a Party This Weekend

Two guys discussing the Golden Globes
Guy #1: Well, the Globes do that. They like to pick movies or people who need an Oscar push -- try to help them out.
Guy #2: Back in '95 they tried to help Sharon Stone but Sharon Stone couldn't help herself.
Ha! True on so many levels... Naturally I joined the conversation after that quip.

Overheard at Work (Re: Into the Wild)

"I didn't hate it. I could see how anyone who was crunchy/granola would love it, though"

Overheard "Reel" New Years Resolutions

Briony: I promise to stop embellishing the truth.

Sweeney Todd: I will have vengeance

Robert Graysmith: I will stop obsessing on serial killers ... or, to be more specific I will stop obsessing on serial killers as soon as I finish this book.
and all the other ones I borrowed from the library. Really I will.
OK and the ones I ordered from Amazon. After that I will stop. I swear.

Leonidas: I vow to schedule that appointment with the otolaryngologist.

Agnes: I will no longer let the men in my life define me!

Plainview: I will drink all of your milkshakes

If you've overheard any new years resolutions from the stars this year, please share them in the comments. Maybe we'll add few to this list.
