This Link Roundup Will Soon Be Adapted Into a Stage Musical

Towleroad Far From Heaven being adapted into a stage musical. I've been burned on this sort of thing too many times but at least it's by the composer of Grey Gardens and that had a few lovely tunes.

And would make a good stage-to-movie candidate actually...

NYT
the latest injury from the set of the Spider Man musical on Broadway. Wednesday matinee cancelled. I am 100% certain that someone will one day write a bestseller about the behind-the-scenes of this disaster prone production
Cinema Blend Peter Weir not interested in a sequel to Master & Commander. Awww. Maybe they should just adapt it for a stage musical instead. Kidding.

Movie|Line has a jolly interview with Mike Leigh on the eve of the release of Another Year. I love this bit on why he'd never make a superhero film (no, really. the question was posed to him in a way that's not as crass as it sounds)
I use film to make a personal kind of film in a very specific, particular way. And there is no more reason for me to do what I think you're suggesting than there would for me to give up being a film director an become the pilot of a jumbo jet flying across the Atlantic. Or a brain surgeon or, indeed, a coal miner.
I love thinking of Mike Leigh as coal miner. Tee hee. Come to think of it. He would make a GREAT director for a coal mining movie or a... wait a minute. I have it. Topsy-Turvy demonstrated that Leigh can sell a musical number. So... Mike Leigh, directing the acclaimed musical Floyd Collins about that explorer trapped in a cave!

Floyd Collins is so pretty. Let's listen to a couple of its songs.

Her Awesomeness Audra McDonald & Hair's Will Swenson doing
"Through the Mountains" from Floyd Collins

Matt Doyle (Gossip Girl) doing "How Glory Goes" from Floyd Collins.
This song is perfection but it must be hard to sing because there are a lot
of bad versions on YouTube. This version gets better as it goes.

My brain does like to wander. Obviously needed a break from thinking / writing about Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar...

Moving On...
Pop Eater have you heard this crazy story about 80s star Marilu Henner? Seems she has something called "superior autobiographical memory" - fascinating story really and totally unrelated: I've always thought Marilu was a hilarious celebrity.
Go Fug Yourself Fug or Fab Style: Mila Kunis
In Contention Jafar Panahi banned from making films. So terrible. As Guy says, this puts the silly annual Oscar bitching into perspective.
AV Club Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg offered $1 million to box each other for charity cuz they both starred in boxing picture, see? This story cracks me up on so many levels. Like, no movie stars would risk their billion dollar faces for charity. The only risk movie stars take with their moneymakers is plastic surgery.

Tired of critics awards yet? You can say so if you are. The London Critics Circle have offered up nominations. Sadly, The King's Speech -- the only British film that doesn't need any Oscar boost -- is the only one they're willing to back for crossover attention; it shows up on both their "Film of the Year and "British Film of the Year" lists and doubles up on Helena Bonham-Carter and Colin Firth in two acting categories, too. (sigh) Whew... I thought Colin Firth was in danger of losing his Oscar momentum there for a second. Thank god, they threw their weight behind him.

Not to be a theatre geek, but excuse me while I go freak out over Audra's awesomeness.

("How Glory Goes" IS ridiculously tough to sing, and yet Audra's rendition is completely brilliant - you should check it out.)

What pisses me off is the near-assured Oscar nomination for Helena Bonham Carter, despite the lack of any real enthusiasm for her performance in The King's Speech. Jacki Weaver and Olivia Williams are considered dark horses, but HBC is a done deal? What the hell?!?

I did a brief write-up of the Far From Heaven musical announcement today, too. It's the right team for the right material. The Grey Gardens songwriters do wonderful, character-driven songs, and the Take Me Out playwright nearly won the Pulitzer for tackling all the same issues as the film. I approve.

OtherRobert -- hopefully the bookwriter and the composer realize what almost no screen-to-stage teams seem to realize: YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO ADAPT EVERY SCENE. IT'S A STAGE MUSICAL. you don't recreate the scenes and add songs. You integrate. The songs are supposed to sell the story. Not be "breaks" in the storytelling.

Andrew -- i should check Audra's version out? Hello I bought her CD titled that the second it came out like 10 years ago ;)

Robert -- who knows.

HBC has been snubbed for glorious performances in the past, so she's owed this. I would love to see her win, and I'd just pretend it's for Wings of the Dove, Fight Club, or Margaret's Museum. I'm also planning to pretend Bening is winning for Mother & Child as well, to make Portman's loss sting less.

In a Mark Wahlberg v. Will Smith boxing match...Hilary Swank wins.

Jonathon - lol.

Mike -- Portman's not going to lose. relax. But you have the right idea. I'm planning to pretend that Colin Firth is winning for A SINGLE MAN instead so that I can be okay with him beating the others this year.

Does anyone else find it interesting that Julie Taymor keeps saying that everything is okay, they're just working out the kinks in the Spider Man musical when there's ample evidence (from the NY Times, no less) to the contrary? Is she directing the same thing people are watching in the theaters?

Oh, Colin Firth... you should have won last year! Now, when you inevitably steal the Oscar from E, F, or G*, I'll have to be mad at you (at least for a few weeks).

*Eisenberg, Franco, and Gosling. Isn't it funny that they line up like that?

I'm waiting for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark to get its own Burden of Dreams/Lost in La Mancha-type documentary. At this point it seems that the making of this show is far more interesting than the show itself.

@Bryan -- Don't feel too bad. I'm almost certain this award would've been Bridges's had Firth won last year. His overdue status coupled with the narrative verve of one role winning two different actors Oscars (The Godfather redux) would've sealed that baby up.

I couldn't help but lol at the category Moët actress of the year. It sounds so glamorous, but it could also be read as the champagne itself, and refer to a sparkly, well-promoted performance but giving you a terrible hangover once everything is said and done. So then I was relieved The Blind Side was last year.

iggy - lol.

Will you be doing a 'yes, no, maybe so' for the trailer of Joe Wright's Hanna?
p.s. don't know if you know that the JCM directed Dior short film is also online.

I've said the same thing about Taymor, Spider-Man the musical, and the future book/movie. It'll be like "Me and Orson Welles." Hey! Maybe Zac Efron can star as the actor playing Spiderman himself.

Nathaniel, I should hope you'd bought it (I was just teasing). That was supposed to be a smiley face at the end of the post. Ha.
