Globe Predictions

When I think of The Golden Globes my mind's eye often dives into Madonna's gargantuan gorgeous new mom cleavage when she won for Evita. The Globes are crazy, sucking on the teat of celebrity so shamelessly that I can't judge them for it so much as stick a kazoo in my mouth and party along. Madonna winning the top prize for Evita. That would never happen at the Oscars. But the Globes didn't care, god bless. Not that Frances McDormand didn't deserve it for Fargo mind, but my point --jumping forward a decade to 2007-- at least the HFPA doesn't always try to predict the Oscars like many of the other Academy-focused groups.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association don't get a lot of respect and they make terrible errors (usually involving aforementioned celebrity ass-kissing --Cameron Diaz for Gangs of New York still haunts me. One of the most idiotic dull nominations ever and it cost Michelle Pfeiffer needed momentum. Aaaaargh) but, then again, point me towards the awards group that doesn't.

MY PREDICTIONS
I'm opting for some surprises (see supporting) because I'd die of boredom if I didn't.

Questions: Who do you think is getting nominated tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn? Which film is sure to get a boost? Which film or actor will be cursing the HFPA for killing off their Oscar momentum?

Atonement & Cast big boost.

Brad nominated for Best Actor.
Viggo gets nominated.

Denzel may be the one cursing.

Superbad or Knocked up nominated for Best Musical /Comedy

Ruby Dee nominated in Supporting actress

That's all I got.

Persepolis in ineligible for Best Animated Film at the Globes, no? Just Best Foreign Film.

I really hope Helena Bonham-Carter is still alive for an Oscar nomination. I just love her and she deserves so much more loot than what she's been handed in past. She'll need tomorrow nomination to stay alive...

On another note, I really wish this was the year everyone just went with past winners for Best Actress. Weird, but I prefer Berry and Kidman to Cotillard and Page.

You're right; that Comedy Actress is a killer field. Praying for Russell, just as much as I know you're not (!), but... I honestly can't see them NOT nominating Katharine Heigl. She's in the mix. No matter who they have to screw over.

P.S. Adam - complete agreement that Bonham Carter has deserved more - even as a Judi Dench fiend, I'm convinced Bonham Carter should have won for 1997. However, I just can't get overly excited about her in Sweeney. The nepotistic nature of the casting leaves a sour taste in the mouth, particularly when this was a prime opportunity to give the role to someone we'd all be confident could deliver the goods.

I think Ruby Dee and Saoirse Ronan are the only potential spoilers in Supporting Actress, though I think your field looks really plausible.

If the Globes toss any Supporting Actor love to Sweeney, I could see it going just as easily to Sacha Baron Cohen.

Good list, but I can easily see a few things that might change.

* I suspect There Will Be Blood will be snubbed for BP, but Anderson will get the Best Director nom along with Julian Schnabel (whose film will also be shut out). Expect American Gangster to make an unwanted 11th hour comeback. Heck, The Great Debators might even make it on the list.

* Denzel will get a nomination, but for his work in The Great Debators, not this. Nicole Kidman will slog her way into the contender list with her Margot performance.

* I am expecting a Charlie Wilson shut-out. Nobody likes that movie, from what I hear. The Kite Runner, meanwhile, may surprise a few people.

* There really isn't any possibility of John Travolta getting a nomination... is there?

* The Kite Runner will be nominated as a foreign language film, and will probably win too. Stupid Golden Globes.

Anonymous said...

Just a hunch, but I think "American Gangster" gets left at the altar for good tomorrow morning, with zero nominations. That would be the knockout blow, I suspect, for its chances with the Academy.

Give Adam and Rob a ballot! Let's get Helena Bonham-Carter nominated before it's too late!

(On the subject of casting the role...didn't hubby bring in a gazillion actresses to test for the role before settling on HBC?)

Anonymous said...

Kidman gets the best reviews of her career since Dogville with a character that shocks and brings out intense reaction from people but she is not in the race. If Meryl had played Margot exactly the way Kidman played her, she would be ahead of the race.

And then with TGC, still nothing. It can only happen to you, Nicole.

Picture (Musical/Comedy):
Knocked Up instead of Once :(
Director:
Sidney Lumet instead of Schnabel
Screenplay:
Lars & the Real Girl instead of Atonement
Actor (Musical/Comedy)
Steve Carell and Don Cheadle instead of Hansard :( and Hoffman (double Blanchett is one thing but double Hoffman?!)
Actress (Drama):
Marion Cotillard and Laura Linney (both were Drama at Satellites) instead of Foster and Knightley
Actress (Musical/Comedy):
Katherine Heigl and Nicole Kidman instead of Bonham-Carter and Cotillard
Supporting Actor:
Casey Affleck instead of Travolta
Supporting Actress:
Saoirse Ronan instead of Jennifer Garner (can Juno really do THAT well?)

worse than that. i could even see them going triple HOFFMAN which horrifies me. the sad thing is the one he's most likely to get nominated for with OSCAR and GLOBE is actually the worst performance of hte three (charlie wilsons' war) --best this in year in THE SAVAGES i think...

i know that ONCE will probably get the boot but it's the last chance to honor it. do right HFPA!

NATHANIEL R said...

Um wait. anon --you actually think COTILLARD will get snubbed? that's a pretty no guts no glory prediction

Other than Johnny Depp, the best actor in ST was a somewhat minor character - Beadle, assistant to the judge. I would love to see him get some recognition. However, I doubt if he will. Comparing the original show to the movie - I found Mrs. Lovett (Bonham-Carter) to be a total bore compared to the feisty / dolty Angela Lansbury. Bonham Carter didn't do it for me.

NATHANIEL R said...

pomocho. i would love a complete shutout for CHARLIE WILSONS WAR but this is the globes. and they love...

HANKS
ROBERTS
and
NICHOLS

plus there's the SORKIN factor. I can't see it getting completely shut out much as that would be a breath of fresh air.

Robert said...

Sadly I feel like Once will get hung out to dry, but I'm not sure by what film.

Some of my other guesses: They'll like Lumet and Devil. TWBB will be left out (too dark ala Munich). They give Hairspray nods for pic, Blonski and Travolta. Into the Wild snags pic, Penn, Holbrook and Keener. Leslie Mann and Knocked Up find spots. And here's me out on a massive limb: Brad Pitt sneaks in for Jess James.

Alas my ability to predict is always skewed by my cynisism toward the process. HFPA and their starphukking.

I'm thinking that Travolta will get upgraded to Lead Comedy/Musical. They love him.

"Atonement" and cast getting boost.

Richard Gere (The Hoax) receiving a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

Romola Garai receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

I've actually predicted a Brad Pitt sneak attack as well (with Affleck, unfortunately, in supporting). I wonder if the Globes can resist the glam factor in nominating both of the Jolie-Pitts. But that might be wishful thinking, since both of them could make my own year-end list (Jolie is iffy, at either 4 or 5 right now, and I've yet to see Atonement, Juno, or Sweeney Todd).

I'm also predicting (hoping for?) an American Gangster shutout, and for Charlie Wilson to find its only nomination in the form of Tom Hanks.

Anonymous said...

God, I hope I'm right then about Charlie Wilson -- because that movie is a pile.

And I really hope YOU'RE wrong about John Travolta.

And I hope everyone here is right about that darn American Gangster shut-out... though I sincerely doubt it. I can really see it playing the safe, middle-of-the-road nomination; mark my words that either this or The Great Debators will recieve the dubious honor of being one of the two BP nominees without a BD nomination.

Also: here's some silly nonsense from the Hollywood Reporter:

"Or as one strategist said, somewhat nostalgically, "There are many good movies but no great movies." In a year of hotheaded predictions, that may be the most accurate pronouncement of all."

Excuse me while I barf from the inaccuracy of that statement.

Anonymous said...

Mortensen's wishful thinking on your part Nathaniel. I think McAvoy's getting in instead.

There's no way they'll nominate Blonsky in such a competitive Actress Comedy year - even if musicals are their crack. More likely to be perennial fave Kidman.

Linney will be missed but can still stage an 11th hour Wattsian coup (c. 2003) at the Oscars.

PS. Shout out to all the actressexuals out there: this week's issue (Dec 7-13) of SCREEN INTERNATIONAL is an Actress special with loads of gorgeous FYC ads from this season's main players and nice spotlight feature on the ten women most likely to get near Oscar (and a little sidebar on the supporting women too). Nice issue to keep.

Anonymous said...

I really enjoyed American Gangster & I really hope it doesn't get shut out.

I'm hoping for a George Clooney & Michael Clayton Snubbed. I hated that movie, the only exception is Tilda.

Anonymous said...

Blonsky will get in.

3:10 to Yuma will get in ( I know it's a long shot).

Hopefully, The Great Debaters ( I've seen it & the standout is Nate Parker )or American Gangster will too.

Atonement will get the huge boost.

Hopefully Viggo will get a nomination.

Anonymous said...

Persepolis is not eligible for Animated Film.
At least one of the Brionys will get in.
If CWW is nominated for Screenplay, it will be nominated for Best Comedy or Musiaal too.
I doubt if both Blonsky and Carter can get nominated over Kidman and Linney.
Jack Nicholson has a chance as actor in a comedy or musical since The Bucket List is in the NBR top 10.

There were so many overrated movies this year.

Enchanted- Songs were terrible and the last act ruined it.
Knocked up- Not Funny & too long
Ratatouille- Average animated movie.
Michael Clayton- A boring episode of Law & Order.

If those are shut out then I'm happy, but I doubt it.

BEST Movies of 2007

No Country for Old Men
Zodiac
Into the Wild
Eastern Promises

If they are included that will make my week.

Movies I liked , but didn't love

Jesse James
American Gangster
Waitress

If these are included instead of those overrated ones, then that's cool too.

My take on what I WANT for the Golden Globes. Sigh

I'm glad you note the Globe love for Kidman. I really think she will get in there (although the Oscar is obviously Christie's to lose at this point). And Katherine Heigl has to get in there...although she will probably get nomed for TV too, and she's a good bet for a win there...

Anonymous said...

Best actress comedy/musical will be :
Adams
Page
Cotillard
Kidman

5th spot : Linney or Heigl

Anonymous said...

No, no, no. I don't think Cotillard will get snubbed. I moved her to Drama instead of Comedy.

Both Cotillard and Linney went Drama at the Satellites. Why would they switch it up for the Globes? Especially, like you said, Comedy is a TOUGH one for the ladies this year. They'd both fair better in Drama. At least I think so, I can see them both getting Drama nods at the Globes.

NATHANIEL R said...

hmmm. well according to THE ENVELOPE (Unless i missed some change) Cotillard was deemed a musical/comedy category thing (despite that it's a non musical non comedic performance. ugh) but maybe i missed a press release that changed that.

Glenn Dunks said...

Anon 7.57 the HFPA placed Cotillard and Linney in comedy/musical category.

My globes predix are on my blog. Some noteworthy bits in mine are:
Sean Penn gets a director nod but Into the Wild doesn't for best picture.

Frank Langella and Josh Brolin for best actor.

John C Reilly for best actor m/c for Walk Hard.

The Lovely Laura Linney shut out of best actress m/c although perhaps she could be a spoiler for drama with her Breach or Jindabyne perf. I can dream...

Wilkinson snubbed for Michael Clayton. I don't know why I did that.

I really really wanted to predict Clint Eastwood for original score, but I'm not sure even the HFPA could be that much of a starfucker.

Anonymous said...

If that fat pig Blonsky gets in at the expense of Kidman or Linney, I'll blow chunks. And Travolta? why Nathaniel? WHY!?!?!?!

Anonymous said...

I predict:

* triple Hoffman,
* Cohen gets a Supporting Nod,
* Eastwood for Score,
* a nod for Cronenberg,
* Adrien Brody for Actor/Comedy,
* a nod for "Pop! Goes My Heart".

I don't really believe any of these will happen, but hey, it's the Globes.

As long as they don't double nom Depp for both Sweeney Todd and Pirates. I'm guessing Paul Thomas Anderson only gets a screenplay nod. That man gets led around a lot only to get screwed over by the "major" awards.

And won't someone please think of the James McAvoy!

Sometimes I long for a world where there are no awards season. Then we can enjoy whatever movie we like without preconceived notions and immaturity.

I thought this was supposed to be fun? It's not a life or death situation. If your favorite movie or performance doesn't get in OH WELL. Are you going to dislike the movie or performance if it doesn't garner a nomination? Grow up.

I've thought all year that they'd go Depp-crazy and nominate him for both. Also, I think Cohen will get in for supporting. And that both Kidman and Linney will get in via a 6-nominee list.

I also think McAvoy will make it. Perhaps I'm being naive, but I think here's where Atonement will stake its claim.

Anonymous said...

Jose, I have MUCH love to Michael Cera. I see him as a young Jim Carrey in terms of comedic abilities, not necessarily performance style.

If he got a nod for Superbad I'd be happy, though I don't think he truly deserves one (even though he's terrific in it). I think it be unfair to single him out over Jonah Hill.

Maybe a supporting nod (highly unlikely) for Juno or perhaps a SAG nod for Superbad ensemble. That was a stellar young cast.

Maybe even a breakout for him at this years Film Bitch...?

c.p. iñor said...

I would die of happiness if Cotillard gets snubbed... so I guess I'll be alive after the nods.

Anonymous said...

I'm a bit of a Cotillard supporter myself. I wasn't wowed, but I wasn't unimpressed, either. I do prefer her performance to Christie's although only just barely, but I guess it's irrelevant since neither will be touching my own list. Am I the only one who's all about Linney, in either of her performances, this year (except for certain days when I'm all about Wei, but you get the point)?
