But you'll still be here, right? Riiiight? It's Valentines Day. I'm allowed to be needy /clingy.

How could you not be anticipating ATONEMENT, like, at all? Joe Wright (y'all remember how good PRIDE & PREJUDICE was) directs Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Brenda Blethyn, Vanessa Redgrave, etc. in an adaptation of an epic, Booker Prize-nominated novel with a screenplay by Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons). I expect it to be a major Oscar contender, and even if it's half as brilliant as P&P was, it'll still be worth seeing fo sho!
Julie Taymor's next project "Across the Universe" looks splendid. The trailer just came out and it looks like it could be a Moulin Rouge-esque love story.
Where is the love for "The Golden Age" Nate?
it will be interesting to see how they translate Atonement to the screen, as most of the book's power comes from its more, er, novelistic aspects.
great book though; definitely looking forward to catching the film.
Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret" with Anna Paquin, Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo. Not sure why it's been so difficult to release. And Wong Kar Wei's "My Blueberry Nights" with Norah Jones and Jude Law. He's always interesting and not working with Chris Doyle on this one.
I just love your Top Ten. I want to see all of them.
Charlie Wilson's War? Mike Nichols is usually pretty dependable.
I tell you what, I read up more closely on ATONEMENT, and it totally would have made my list. It looks potentially great -- very interested to see if Romola Garai gets to make The Leap with it.
Nat, can we see the complete lists of each of the participants? Or just yours? Or everyone's at their respective blogs?
Any way to get more lists of worthwhile '07 releases would be neat.
Corey, my love for The Golden Age has gone the way of my love for Cate Blanchett.
Kin, in terms of the individual lists. i'm not doing any more posts but I'll say the ones that didn't make it from each of ours are:
NATHANIEL:
Savage Grace (julianne moore), Untitled (Kimberly Pierce's Boys Dont Cry follow up), 3:10 to Yuma (next Christian Bale -got moved to 2008 now), Coraline (another Neil Gaiman adaptation), Georgia Rule (actress heavy. i'm a sucker for that), The Other Boleyn Girl (Portman vs. Johansson), Eastern Promises (Cronenberg), Mongol, In the Land of Women, Atonement, The Brave One, Funny Games, Hairspray.
JOE:
Margaret (Kenneth Lonergan's You Can Count on Me follow up), My Blueberry Nights (Wong Kar Wai), The Brave One (Jodie Foster), Knocked Up, No Country for Old Men, The Namesake, Into the Wild, Charlie Wilsons War, Dedication, Ratatouille (Pixar), The Savages (Hoffman and Linney in Sundance hit), The Golden Age (Elizabeth sequel), The Other Boleyn Girl
GABRIEL:
Rescue Dawn (Werner Herzog with Christian Bale), The Golden Age, The Savages, Oceans 13, Wind that Shakes the Barley, Talk to Me, The Brave One, Sicko (Michael Moore), Across the Universe (Julie Taymor Beatles musical), Ratatouille, Sin City 2, Atonement, Year of the Dog, I am Legend, Shrek the Third, Fantastic Four 2
JA:
The Mist (Horror), Funny Games (Michael Haneke), Harry Potter 4, Coraline, I am Legend (sci-fi), Eastern Promises, Hostel 2, Spring Breakdown (parker posey and more funny ladies), The Host (Korean horror festival hit), Diary of the Dead, Sin City 2, Knocked Up, Dedication, The Signal, Year of the Dog, Savage Grace
LULU:
El Cantante (JLo and Marc Anthony), Across the Universe, Hairspray, Year of the Dog (Molly Shannon), Away From Her (Julie Christie stars -best actress hopeful), Jindabyne (Australian with Laura Linney), Sicko, Spring Breakdown, Grace is Gone (John Cusack, sundance hit), An American Crime (Catherine Keener stars in child abuse drama), Hounddog, Talk to Me, Never Forever, Eastern Promises, Margaret, Dedication, the Namesake (Mira Nair), Georgia Rule, Disturbia, Harry Potter 4, A Mighty Heart (Angelina Jolie), Boss of it All (Lars Von Trier)
"Across The Universe"...Julie Taymor, The Beatles, Bono, Evan Rachel Wood...a musical where the actors actually had to sing on camera.
Looks fantastic!
Also, The Golden Age!!!!
How could you all forget the Coens?!
- cal roth
Cool. Good work guys.
Of the ones not mentioned, I'm most looking forward to Atonement, Eastern Promises, The Brave One (Neil Jordan AND Jodie Foster???? What a potent combo that could be), The Golden Age and the Korean duo of The Host and The King and Clown.
Atonement actually scares me, because great contemporary novels I love generally make dismal movies (e.g. Beloved, All The Pretty Horses). So my recommendation - read and enjoy the novel.
On the other hand, and paradoxically, I'm sort of looking forward to No Country for Old Men, just because McCarthy so explicitly wrote it with an eye toward a screenplay. If you've never read McCarthy (shame on you) it's a very accessible place to start, although his latest (The Road) is even better and also very approachable.
Head to the library kids, the movies will still be there tomorrow.
How did you leave My Blueberry Nights off your own list, Nat?
and fyi, Harry Potter 4 came out in 2005... we're awaiting number 5, believe it or not.
I think in the list should be SAVAGE GRACE because its with the great Julianne Moore a great part for her and hopefully her first oscar.
Nate ~
I missed you ever speaking of your waning love for Cate ... where can I catch up?
Vince
notes on talking to her during a scandal
there you go vince.
and filmfan I agree.
The Road is a freaking masterpiece. Didn't care for No Country for Old Men, though.
As for Atonement, well, as anxious as I am, I'm definitely looking forward to it. Joe Wright and Christopher Hampton could be a cinematic dream team.
Thank you, Nate, for taking the time to repost. I remember that entry from October. Though, I have to confess, I didn't take it so seriously (maybe because I was trying to finish the novel and was still excited and giddy by the prospects the whole film endeavor offered?). Anyway, I finished the book, and still haven't seen the movie. But, judging from what I've gathered from that post and your review (it was really great and really wrong at the same time? (I'm paraphrasing)), I can kind of see where you're going.
Again, thanks for the response. And here's hoping her Australian theatrical sabatical redirects her to more well-examined film choices in her cinema career!
I know its super early, but word of mouth is that Chris Cooper's performane in Breach is fantastic. Do you think voters will remember this performance come nomination time at 2008?
Satoshi Kon's "Paprika" and Harmony Korine's "Mister Lonely"... hopefully those will get released this year.
For me its definitely Reservation Road, Love in the Time of Cholera, Across the Universe and Becoming Jane which has already started collecting ALOT of positive buzz here.
Not to sure about Atonement though, people were not that happy at an early screening of the movie held in Richmond.
Hello I'm Sofia Coppola's Nose
I think that we should consider "LIONS FOR LAMBS", directed by Robert Redford and starring Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Derek Luke, Michael Pena, Erika Christensen...
The movie opens next November 9th.
Hey,
Is there a good website where I can locate all of the releases for 2007 (at this point) so that I can make my own list?
Cheers,
Dave.
I am done with ths site, You have never been objective once in all the years you have been doing this, you pick the ten most anticipated by which actors and actresses you like....There are some movies out there that EVERYONE is predicting to win best pic, but you can't posibly pick one in particular b/c you hate one of the actresses in it! See ya/ I am gone for good
