This is Meryl Streep as Suzanne Vale in Postcards from the Edge. Great movie. I'd also recommend
reading Carrie Fisher's original book of the same name. This is arguably my favorite Meryl Streep performance (yes, I argue with myself about such things). I alluded to just that favored status in my review of another musical comedy performance of hers in A Prairie Home Companion which you can read here if you somehow missed it. And I'm only pimping that review again because I'm feeling the guilt about it being so long since I wrote one that good. Oh to find the time...

Love the movie, love the book, love Meryl's performance. I particularly loved her singing at the end. Why doesn't she sing more? I thought she should have sung at the Oscars instead of Reba.

Another great moment: Shirley MacLain's transformation in her hospital room as she prepares to meet the press.

I do love that Shirley's proud march from the hospital is in Nathaniel's "She's a Bitch"...

Wow, '90 was a great year for Bes Actress nominees. (And quite possibly my favorite year since I've been alive ... '91 is a close second if only because there were three out-of-this-world nominations vs. four). Two amazing villians, a huge star-making, top-grossing turn (that arguable reinvigorated the rom com ... apologies to Meg Ryan's "Sally") and Meryl Streep's best performance ever (I haven't seen Mr. & Mrs. Bridge). Sam is right. Streep should have sung.
