Spectacularly Crappy Day...

...got worse. Phone stolen by five teen thugs. After ten years of living peacefully in New York City this is the second time I've been outnumbered and threatened in less than a month (in two different neighborhoods no less). What the hell is going on? May your weekend be better than mine. I think I will collapse on the couch and watch movies until I can shake it off. I need Poppy!

Yikes, that's awful.
*Sending cross-continental good vibes Nathaniel's way*.
Hope you feel better soon.

That's messed up. I too hope things get better for you quickly.

Good grief mate, are you OK?

You should probably get some gun training then ride the subways all day until you see someone else using your phone and shoot anyone who looks at you funny. That's what Jodie would do.

I'm so sorry. Screw them. They don't have us for moral support like you do. :) Watch Friends or Sex and the City! You will feel better.

how can that shit happen?! did you go to the police or there's no point in that?!

Nat, I'm so sorry to hear. It must have been scary. I hope the movies make you feel better and I'm sending my angry thoughts to those crooks.

Sorry to hear that!!
Maybe this'll brighten your day (a bit). I've seen Chéri last night (it just came out in France) and it's VERY good. Not as light as the trailers want us to believe, so MAYBE that Oscar nomination isn't just whishful thinking after all.

At any rate, it's her best in 16 years. It don't wanna spoil anything, so i'll just say that it was an absolute bliss to finally see her again in a film and a part that are worthy of her. Speaking the words of Colette by way of Christopher Hampton, directed by Frears, filmed by Khondji, dressed in a collection of gowns that will make your head spin faster than you can say "Oscar-winner Consolata Boyle": that was like a second coming, for a lifelong pfan who's been waiting for this since the age of, well... Innocence.

So, Oscar or no Oscar (who cares huh?), she's BACK!

Hope this sorta cheers you up!

ps. If anyone wants info on the film, I'll be glad to share

Julien K -- that's nice to hear! movies are their own reward as I always say (Oscar is just nice bonus occasionally)

Runs -- TOTALLY. Eventually in this city of 8 million I'll find the exact 5 and get my phone back! It is weird how incidents like this suddenly make you aware of why people like movies where ostensible good guys decide to go on killing rampages in order to punish evil people (even though killing rampages are evil themselves and it's such a pandering to our basest instincts move on Hollywood's p... oh never mind)

everyone -- thanks for kind wishes. I take a kind of small comfort in knowing that if they try to listen to the music they will catch the gay: madonna, rufus wainwright, abundant showtunes, etcetera...

Oh yeah, Rufus Wainwright will kill them, that's for sure

That pisses me off. Fuckin dickheads. If I were in New York right now I would be going Travis Bickle on those thugs. Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.

I was mugged by three thugs a year and a half ago. they didn't have weapons, so i got away intact, but they did punch me in the head. OOOOUUUCh!

I called the police and drove around until we found them. A witness saw it and was willing to testify in court. Luckily we didn't have to go that far cause they all confessed..

May you have justice too!

And better your cell phone than any physical damage.

Sorry to hear about it though. Try not to attach any meaning to it. It happens all over.

Good thing you're OK. Too bad the mugging didn't go more like the one in this clip (1:40):

you know. the most aggressive of them who swung a punch at me (meant to scare me cause he missed) also grabbed at my wallet and i instinctively protected it. WHICH IS HILARIOUS BECAUSE THERE WASN'T EVEN A QUARTER IN IT. the phone was worth a lot more than the continually empty wallet. (sigh)

It was strange to see the reaction of the subway crowd though. Most people pretended it wasn't happening (hi Seinfeld finale!) but the incident seemed to set off an intense couple's row: a nearby girlfriend totally got upset with her boyfriend 'you should have helped him' 'this kind of thing is what makes people racist' and so on and so on for several minutes afterwards.) another couple did finally intervene on my behalf (and were verbally abused for their trouble but the thugs did back off and promptly exited the train with my phone).

ouch, Nat, so so sorry sorry sorry.

my only experience w/NYC thuggery was quite similar, silent subway car and all. the funniest part was that they took my watch, realized it was a Mickey Mouse watch, and then gave it back.

big bummer!

(now to get all those phone numbers back!)

In the subway?! that's quite shocking to hear :(

Nick M. said...

In the subway--with other passengers? I often stay out very late in neighborhoods where I do not live and I hate cabs, so the prospective deterioration of the MTA seriously frightens me. May I ask what line you were on, and at what time?

I'm so sorry to hear about that Nat! What a horrible, scary thing to have happen. Sending you some good, warm fluffy vibes from Michigan!

That's terrible. Hope you weren't badly harmed.

NATHANIEL R said...

Nick M -- yes in the subway 2/3 line.
other passengers present.

Glendon -- i was not harmed at all but for my ego and pocketbook and my convenience. No way to contact anyone outside of email -- land line phones are SO passe ;) haven't had one in years.

But this is another example of why Happy-Go-Lucky is good for you. You know in the beginning of the movie when her bike is stolen and instead of freaking out she says "oh... i didn't even have a chance to say goodbye"

i am not quite at that serene place but I appreciate that a movie showed that you could be.

Alexa said...

Poppy heals all wounds from evil strangers. Glad you're okay!!!

What time did the assault occur?

OMG, you poor baby. Huggy vibes to you.

My weekend hasn't been much better. I got food poisoning on the last day of my NY trip and am now stuck at LAX all by myself for 9 hours. The airline did put me up in the Hilton hotel for the night though, so that was nice.

NATHANIEL R said...

sorry Glenn. holdups in travel are terrible

Well, I got mugged in NYC by two Polish sluts who stole my Dior handbag. I guess they were Polish since their accent was very similar to that of Meryl Streep in "Sophie's choice".

Jae Ly said...

Shame on those punks! :(

I'm glad u're OK though.

Saltire Flower said...

I read somewhere that the best thing to do if you're in trouble is to yell "fire". Nobody will come if you're being mugged or beaten up, but since nobody wants to burn to a crisp they'll come to save you.

Wayne B. said...

Sorry to hear some cowards f@$!ed with you and stole your phone. Hope it doesn't spoil your love for New York, you make it sound like a great place to live, well apart from these recent events.

Esther said...

I'm glad you weren't hurt. I've had stuff stolen before but I've never been mugged, thankfully. Take care of yourself.
