Joan Crawford vs. Kate Winslet

Weirdest news of the week coming at'cha right now...

Kate Winslet, who we all thought would lie low for a bit after her Oscar win, is going to play "Mildred Pierce". Yes that Mildred Pierce! It's the restaurateur/mother/martyr role that won the immortal Joan Crawford her long coveted Oscar. HBO is expected to win the rights to the film which is, according to Variety, not a feature remake so much as a miniseries adaptation of the novel that the 1945 classic was based on.

But still...

What's infinitely better news than another classic being reworked? A classic being reinterpreted by the one and only Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven), that's what. If you they have to remake classic cinema --and they don't have to but never mind all that -- at least get someone with a true voice involved. Haynes has already made a mini masterpiece by riffing on the films of Douglas Sirk. He's adept at cinema on cinema or any kind of text on text for that matter. But will lightning strike twice? And for the small screen?

Joan Crawford could not be reached for comment but we hear she's pissed.

And you don't want to mess with Joan Crawford.
"CHRISTTTINAAAAA" "KAAAAAAAAAAATE !!!"

Lol. I heard about this a couple of months ago, but they were just rumors, so I guess it's true.

Kate really hasn't filmed anything in about a year. So I guess that's long enough of a break for her.

I'm not complaining.

I guess I'll be the one to say what everyone else will dread me saying - I am looking forward to this. Give me Kate, any way, any time!

Oh my God... You know those dream projects you think up and know will never come true? This would be one of them. I saw that Patricia Clarkson is being thrown around for the role of Mildred's bff? I would DIE. Or Laura Linney as the bff? How about the role of Mildred's playboy boyfriend? Bradley Cooper? How about Robert Downey Jr. as her charming business investor?

(Sorry... I just really really love Mildred Pierce.)

Kate must do her homework now! I year is sooooooo long for an actress, she should start filming RIGHT NOW that Mildred Peirce tv movie and some movie!!!!!!!! both could be released in 2010 perfectly

Well, she's a great actress but I don't like she does TV. I prefer her as a cinema actress, like Penelope Cruz.

LOL at the Virgin Meryl Streep! Probably Meryl wants the role of Mildred Peirce...

There were rumors that Winslet was being courted for the upcoming A Little Night Music revival with Angela Lansbury (Trevor Nunn's "concept" is to cast most of the principals far too young). Glad to see she has something lined up. This could turn out to be really awesome or just... interesting.

And in Oscar news, it looks like Judi Dench may miss the Oscars this year (I'll be really shocked if she isn't nominated):

Kate ain't messing around or resting on her laurels, is she? Love it. There's potential for this to be one of her best roles (the material's certainly there for that), which is a staggering thought in its own right. And with HBO and Todd Haynes at the helm, hot damn, I'm excited about this one! I'm all for a new miniseries adaptation of this work.

I'm with Cocoa Dior. Give me Kate any day, any how. I'm in. But I wonder why Kate, though. Never thought of her as a Mildred Pierce sort of character...and she seems so young. Joan Crawford needs to get a grip though.

I came.

Why would Kate be contented with one oscar, when some other gals have more than one. Mark my word, if she lives a long time, she will try to be nominated as many times as Streep and win as many times as Hepburn.

I'm so happy right now. Carey Mulligan rave. And now this. Ah.

Love it. Tod Haynes YES. I think they'll go back to the book and make it all kinds of sleazy. Definately need Jonathan Rhys Meyers in there as the boyfriend who sleeps with her daughter. This is great.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it when I hear news here first. Which, happily, is almost always the case. And what news!

EMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYY!

That felt good.

I think that this is great news, and I'd love to see Kate Winslet tackle this role. I wondered what her next move would be, and this would be an insanely great coup for HBO too. Anything to get that god-awful taste of "The Reader" out of my mouth. Yay Kate!

Words cannot describe the film-gasm that this post invoked.

I can't wait until Kate blazes up the screen again but I have reservations for her taking on this project.

And it's been driving me crazy ever since I saw the original, but if they were ever gonna do a remake, the should wait five years or until Abby Breslin is old enough to play Veda.

but who will portray Veda?

Cooper is weasel enough, but who can be a teen bitch *and* sing opera?
