NYFCC (same as it ever was)

The NYFCC have announced the results of their collective "best of the year" and you can see the results here. Suffice it to say: it's more of the same with Scorsese, Pan's Labyrinth, United 93, and the Mirren & Whitaker steamrollers. Discuss in the comments if you're so moved. But why would you be? same as it ever was. same as it ever was

p.s. if you're just joining us the Oscar prediction updates were completed prior to the critics awards. The next prediction overhaul will come after the dust has settled from the Globe announcements (Thursday) and critical prizes.

At the very least, I was expecting Cruz and Gosling to show up.

Helen f*cking Mirren wins again - it still baffles me why people love this overrated woman so much.
HATE her - it is doubly frustrating since my three favourite actresses (Streep, Dench, Winslet) will be beaten by her.

Sasha Baron Cohen showingf up again

thank god Cruz was totally ignored, her performance is so overrated, good performance, but not good enough to get all this buzz, great film & ensemble...but that's it...

Mirren and Whitaker have gone 6 for 6 so far. That's absurd.

This race is becoming simultaneously the most fascinating (the ascension of Borat, Clint's second-coming) and most snooze-inducing (Helen and Forest winning everything, Clint's second coming) I've kept tabs on in some time.

I'm at least glad United 93 is not being forgotten completely...even if it's not by own estimation the very best film of the year. And at least Helen Mirren is on her way to winning an Oscar...can't complain about that. Kind of disappointed by the general lack of Little Children love (thank God for the Haley mention in the NYFCC--one of the few fresh choices in a sea of growingly stale ones). Blah we'll see.

Well, quite frankly, I don't give a damn if they look the same because I'd rather United 93 get another Best Picture title than seeing stuff like The Departed up there (although I haven't seen The Queen so I can't comment on that)

While I'm not at all surprised that Mirren is cleaning up in Best Actress, even if it's a shame because the Best Actress category this year is so good. I am quite surprised about Whitaker. Sure, he may be good and all, but his performance (from the reviews) didn't sound like the kind of performance that sweeps. Not at all. I expected some critics to go for Gosling, maybe a few for DiCaprio and even some for O'Toole to give him a nudge towards Oscar. Hmmm. I suppose this just goes to show how bad the Best Actor category is this year.

But, really, if Sasha Baron Cohen gets an Oscar nomination out of this I think I would produce a sound on audible to dogs and various breeds of bears.

hey people garner major critical play and miss out on oscar all the time. If you're a longshot, you're a longshot irregardless.

Oh, yeah for sure. But if the critics are going to be all insular in the big four categories (atm, we can't say they're picking favourites in supporting or the other categories outside of Newcomer) then I'm glad it's United 93 coming through over The Departed. And I'm glad some people like Sasha Baron Cohen are managing to get notice even with Whitaker there.

Btw, nice usage of the Talking Heads, Nat...the tune is now randomly stuck in my head. :D

I'm so glad about the cruise toward victory that Mirren's highly deserving turn is getting-it's about time that a woman over the age of forty gets an Oscar.

Jeers, however, to Whitaker. I can't stand another middling character actor winning here for playing a real person.

Altaf,
She hasn't won the big one yet. A little optimism can't hurt.

Frankly, I'm happy for Helen Mirren. It's nice to see a woman over 40 (as John T has pointed), over 60 in her case, receiving the recognition that she is. And, hopefully, if the current trends are any indication, that category will be filled with 3 - 4 women over the age of 45 (or 55). Wow. What a novel idea. We can only dream.

I think that tommorrow will also have a big frenzy, with the noms for the Broadcast Critics.

i'm surprised Happy Feet won with both...that's kind of sad to me.

I think that Happy Feet will take the Oscar. It has gotten a big plus from being in the National Board of Reviews Top 10, and I think that it is also in AFI, but I could be mistaken. Anyways, it's the frontrunner after sweeping the critics this past weekend.

I too am happy for Mirren, even though I don't think the performance is in the same league as anything she's done on Prime Suspect, or even Elizabeth I. But I'd like some Streep, Dench, Winslet or Cruz love to be shown soon...

Helen Mirren "overrated"??

Forest Whitaker a "middling character actor"??

There are some real screwballs lurking on these boards here.

NATHANIEL R said...

misty I think when one hears Helen Mirren described as "overrated" it's probably a case of people's reactions to this performance. Certainly as an actor with a long, adventurous, and impressive filmography she's worthy of excessive praise.

but, yeah, even I myself find this particular performance overvalued. I greatly enjoyed it. But better than Dench or Streep or EVERYONE in such a strong year? Weird.

One can only assume it's the "playing a real person" thing rearing up again. That is just the undefeated bait of bait, apparently.

that's also helping Whitaker of course but both of them are terrific talents so it's nice that they're getting attention. One just wishes that there was a little variety is all...

Mirren IS overrated IMO - I have thought so even before The Queen (which is one of her better performances).
She was brilliant (and deserving of an Oscar) in 'Gosford Park' though.
I would be happier about this trend to award older actresses if it was Dench or Streep both of whom I love.

Mirren's performance is fine... but it really ain't alla that.

She's done outstanding work in her career but this performance is just...fine.

Judi Dench, on the other hand...

Yeah I also don't get why Mirren is getting so much over-the-top sweep action in such a strong year. It's rather like Philip Seymour Hoffman's sweep last year.

I think it's the real person factor multiplied by the impulse of "OMG, this person's been great forever and they've never won anything. We have to give them an oscar RIGHT. NOW. they'll never be playing this iconic famous figure again." Whatever.

I'm hoping the NSFC at least will mix it up some, as they often do.
