2008 The Girlie Show ?

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with last minute 2007 releases and upcoming awardage decisions --so many strong movies this year. How will I choose the filmbitch awards? So to play hooky from my "duties" I'm watching trailers for next year. After this manly holiday season of No Country for Old Men, demon barbers, There Will Be Blood, and Will Smith as the only person alive, next year is looking pretty girly.

clockwise from top left: Mamma Mia, Sex & The City, The Accidental Husband, and 27 Dresses

I have intense reservations about all of these and I fully expect to hate one of them, but for easy to identify reasons (Umaphilia, Streep, Marsden, SJP) I'm eager to see them, too.

One more thing: For reasons I shan't understand ever, the international trailer for Mamma Mia (below, thx) is more Meryl focused. Therefore better. What -- they don't think Americans worship LaStreep? Are they daft?

Is Sweeney Todd the best of the year??

i'm still buzzing from sweeney todd. that source material is indestructible I guess.

I have hope for Mamma Mia! I mean . . . the cast. Of course, I said the same thing about The Stepford Wives.

I think Mamma Mia could be a blast but I'm worried about a film directed by a stage director.

You saw Sweeney Todd??? Wow, I'm so glad you loved it. Whoda thunk it, huh? Hope it wins the globe. If CWW wins, I'll puke.

I'm sad, though, that Atonement isn't an A.

And I guess There Will Be Blood is the last major release for you then? Saving the best for last? ; )

The trailer for Mamma Mia made me cringe. I hope the movie is better. I love both ABBA and Meryl.

I'm a girl and I don't want to see any of these. :-(

BRING ON THE DARK KNIGHT.

You have the wrong trailer for Mama Mia. This trailer shows Meryl singing and what a voice. She can do anything! Also, she looks like she can easily be in her late 30's/early 40's. WOW!

so when do we get your scoop on sweeney todd????

Wow, you've really turned around on Sweeney Todd, Nat.

I'm assuming that the "hate" is for "Accidental Husband" because I hate it already - "let's humiliate a strong, independent woman for laughs before properly domesticating her." YUCK. (And what the hell, is Uma trying for "the next Julia Roberts"? oh uma, uma...)

The international trailer is SO much better - I loved LaStreep in Prairie Home Companion (amoung many other things) but her singing is what took me by surprise there. So - Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters in a musical? I couldn't care less about the ABBA music (and the lead actress looks slight) but I am so there. Streep just glows.

JULIE WALTERS!!!!!!

Why is Meryl even famed for drama? She is so much better at comedy -- more relaxed, exuberant and infectious. Oh boy, the kicks I get out of watching her have fun...

I freaking love Meryl Streep. I keep watching this trailer and I've never seen the broadway show because I HATE jukebox musicals (even though i love abba)

It's like she can make anything work.

redsatindoll --correct: accidental husband looks SO sexist. so of course the girls will eat it up. They love those sexist romcoms. is it masochism? patriarchal brainwashing? what is it?

glenn --not only Julie Walters but Christine f***ing Baranski. that's one fine hammy trio for musical/comedy. I am so there.

colin it's the late 70s to mid 80s. Streep was just knocking them out of the park every single year (one of the best runs any actor has ever had in the history of well, ever). Now, though, comedy is obviously where it's at with her.

I listen to the Mamma Mia trailer and cant help wondering what Meryl wouls have sounded like as Mrs. Lovett. But I digress...

I do love the part where she says "You sound like your having fun already". Its like there is a camera watching me jam to the song.

And isnt Dominc Cooper just HOT. I smell a hump day hottie coming in the ranks

So Johnny Depp can really sing? Is he winning the Oscar? What about Helena? Dish!

And what's so wrong about "Charlie Wilson's War" winning anything? It could be great after all, and that cast is stellar. When Aaron Sorkin's on, the man's amazing.

The "Sex and the City" trailer is fabulous. Can't wait until the film comes out. Ahhh, Carrie. <3

"Mamma Mia" though? Not feeling it . . . at all, going off of that trailer.

NATHANIEL R said...

No. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter still can't sing

--it's just as I said when i saw the three scenes a few weeks back. they do OK... but it is totally obvious that they are not "singers"

but, turns out, Sondheim's material is so masterful and Tim Burton is on top of his game in a way I haven't seen in well over a decade so it totally jumps that hurdle. They might've had a true masterpiece had they been up to the vocal demands.

as for CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR. i thought it was incredibly awkward in its tonal mix and Hoffman and Roberts both grated on my nerves

The trailer for "Mamma Mia" is surprising. I LOVED it.

Is there enough there for Johnny Depp to win his Oscar, or will voters find the film to be too bloody/gothic/cheesy/dark, etc.?

my current suspicion is that he will win IF the film gets nominated. If not I think it might be a big war for the prize. I love the years that are hard fought.

adam k. said...

Yeah I suspect if the film doesn't catch on in other major categories, Depp could have a hard time. But honestly I still have a hard time seeing him lose if he's nominated. It's just too perfect an opportunity.

BUT since There Will Be Blood could be just as big as Sweeney now with oscar, DDL will have plenty of heat as well. Before the TWWB resurgence, I was thinking it would be Depp easily. But if both films are nominated for pic and director and have wide support, it could be very hard fought... and of course the globes will tell nothing. Same as with actress. AWESOME

If the Globes leave us with Depp winning Musical/Comedy and DDL winning Drama, I think that there's the A vs. B race in Lead Actor, and they'll opt for the overdue choice that's never won vs. the former winner that's expected to be brilliant whenever he decides to act. I'm doubting that others can gain that necessary traction to overtake one of those two, unless "Sweeney" bombs big time, and "There Will Be Blood" is just too out there to deal with. It is exciting thinking about who could overtake those two if it came to that though.

Aw why do you hate Marsden.

Mama Mia looks amazing btw.

NATHANIEL R said...

huh? i love James Marsden. he was one of my favorite things about 2007.

Anonymous said...

James Marsden is so f-ing sexy AND beautiful (rare to be both, I think). And he looks amazing for his age (34). And he has that geeky thing going on too. And he can dance. And he has a lovely singing voice. And those eyes, cheekbones... Ah, let me count the ways...

(Though I prefer him with shorter hair a la Hairspray, than the longer floppy do in Enchanted.)

adam k. said...

Regardless of how good OR scary-bad Mamma Mia! turns out to be, I think Meryl can count on yet another golden globe nomination for this one. And I, for the record, think it looks super fun.

She'll have a big year with this and Doubt.

Haha, is it just me, or does Meryl have a touch of Cher in her singing voice? I freaking love that those two are friends.

And yeah, Meryl looks HOT and one could never tell she's pushing 60. Jesus. And thankfully, she doesn't look fake like Cher.

oh hahah nvm I read it wrong, I thought you said you're gonna hate 27 Dresses because Marsden's in it.
