Please Calm Down

<--- Melania (who you met a few posts ago) and I are off to see The Golden Compass. Less than three hours to go. Wheeee. I am really trying to contain my excitement in order to prevent hopping up and down and other sudden movements. Melania is very skittish. If you're attending the sneak preview please enter and exit the theater in an orderly fashion so as not to startle her.

In other news: Some updates to the Oscar prediction pages and tomorrow I'll try to have that Max Von Sydow interview up --am experiencing some technical difficulties.

Re: Ruby Dee's nomination

I have yet to see American Gangster (somehow, with car trouble and limited time, it has escaped me), but I love the idea of Ruby Dee finally getting an Oscar nod, and I think most of the older members of the Academy will as well, so I agree with putting her in the top five.

When was the last time a completely foreign-made film won Best Picture?

I'm also doubting Atonement's winning chances. Too British. Acadamy obviously like to reward those films with people from their own turf.

re: The Golden Comnpass.....

Awful. Really, just a dreadful film. I fully blame Weitz - he simply has no skill for this kind of film. The entire thing is very amateur; he has no idea how to handle fantastical elements without making them come off as very silly and laughable.

(I haven't read the books.)

Came back from the sneak preview.

It won't be everybody's cup of tea, but it's a great family film.

I think you should put Sacha Baron Cohen in Sweeney Todd on your chart. Right now, I don't see him anywhere. But apparently he steals the show. The film would have to be big in order for him to shortlist, but it could happen... especially if globes get the ball rolling. Anyway, I think he should be at least as high as Rickman.

Since so many of us won't have the ability to discuss The Golden Compass and others have already taken it upon themselves to discuss the new Oscar charts, I will too:

Apart from Blanchett and Bardem all your supporting predictions are, SHOCK, actually supporting performances. And, from your words, really small performances too. Holbrook (who I've seen and is lovely but I'd hardly be calling for an Oscar), Von Sydow, Redgrave, Macdonald, which is nice to see.

If Jolie makes it along with Cotillard and Christie then that'll be a triple pre-summer lineup.

Some of your Oscar write-ups aren't loading in the proper boxes in the best picture page.

What did you think of Kidman in Golden Compass ? Is she really that good ? I can smell BAFTA love after that Guardian review

NATHANIEL R said...

she's, hmmmm, what's the word... a-w-e-s-o-m-e

that said it is not an awards type role. sorry

Anonymous said...

True, but that's what they said about Weaver in Aliens and Guiness in Star Wars...

NATHANIEL R said...

the thing with Kidman though is that the role is incomplete. It's a terrific start but Mrs. Coulter only gets more complex as the books continue to grow...

its kind of like judging performances in LORD OF THE RINGS. they only reveal themselves fully when you have the entire trilogy in place

GOLDEN COMPASS has a very fine soundtrack. If it gets nominated for nothing else, that stands a chance.

My God, what a horrible film! The other adjective that I keep coming up with is "stupid." I have not read the books, fyi.

I am beginning to hate Kidman for what she has done to her face--namely, her hair and the lips. On screen, they looked like they would burst any second...painful. Does she have no one around her telling her that she was at her cutest with red hair and her natural, thin, gorgeous lips? Forget the botox, put down the collagen needle Nic!

What about a Cera for supporting in Juno? He's had a heck of a year.
