Blame it on the Boogie

Boogie Nights opened 13 years ago today. Do you love it as much as I do?

No, no... you couldn't possibly. I love it too much. I cannot describe the muchness. (But I shall attempt to if you click on the "Boogie Nights" label and read various old postings.)

Most Awkward Moment Ever: In mall with parents. Teenage girl who kind of resembled Rollergirl was wearing rollerblades.

Mom said to Dad, "Boogie Nights." He and I both laughed, then my parents stared at me for a little while. Awkward moment lasted for a few minutes.

(I still love Boogie Nights. Though I prefer There Will Be Blood and Magnolia. And I still love Punch Drunk Love too, and Hard Eight is worth checking out. WE WANT MORE PT ANDERSON.)

I think one of the reasons I keep watching films is the vain hope that a character as mesmerizing, layered, and downright brilliant as Amber Waves will come along.

I love the movie...don't so much love the fact that you had to remind me that Philip Seymour Hoffman and Thomas Jane are both in it.

But seriously, love love love this movie. It is Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece. That PSH was not able to prevent it from being so beautiful is a testament to the film's powers, given that he was absolutely putrid...like, ridiculously hammy and just plain atonal, even by his standards.

THE PRETENTIOUS -- i'm so glad i'm not alone in finding Hoffman often NOT at the service of the movie he's in but merely servicing himself.

wait. ewww gross. that came out wrong.

HAYDEN -- amen. one of the best characters of that or any other decade really. top ten all time.

J.J. -- yay, welcome to the converted!

andrew r -- isn't it crazy how good every film is. I think he's the most consistently brilliant director working. or rather not working. ARGH.

Love, love this movie. The first half (i.e. The 70's), I feel is something truly special. That breezy pathos (if that makes any sense) is just really great stuff. i think the second half suffers from trying so hard to show the downfall after the decadence, but it hardly takes away from the whole. I think PTA's masterpiece is THERE WILL BE BLOOD (how do you follow that up?), but when something like BOOGIE NIGHTS is your second best film!? Yeah, that's saying something.

Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg were originally cast for Brokeback Mountain: yet he (Wahlberg) couldn’t bring himself to do it. This picture shows Mark has since lost his sense of humor or he’s no longer desperate to be taken seriously. As though he only wants to be seen as a tough guy meat head who does action pictures and the occasional weirdo romp with The Happening and The Lovely Bones.

it's incredible, i can't believe this was PTA's second movie because the cinematic maturity she shows in this is astounding. And the cast is marvelous

Love it very much, it's still my fav Anderson's movie and it boasts my fav perfs from Reynolds, Wahlberg, Graham and great Julianne

too many things, too many things, too many things

Mirko, yeah the amount of "career bests" in Anderson's filmography is downright frightening. He is so brilliant with actors.

ONe of my favorite movies with one of my all time favorite scenes, Roller Girl and Amber Waves doing that mom/coke scene.

I have this, i should watch it again.

Chris -- their relationship is my favorites "too many things, too many things" / "can i call you mom"

Daniel -- wow. ok. maybe Daniel loves it a teensy bit more than I do. But very few people do!

I loved this movie, such a masterpiece. I remember when I first saw the poster for this and I saw Julianne Moore was in this I just had this feeling she was going to get a Oscar nomination for this movie. Of course for me that year in the Supporting Actress category I thought the three best Supporting Actress performances were Julianne Moore, Alison Elliot "Wings of the Dove", and Sarah Polley "The Sweethereafter".

I also was introduced to the scenery chewing of Phillip Seymor Hoffman I cringed everytime he was on the screen, but he didn't derive too much from it.

The PSH haters again. sigh

cal -- i'm proud to have provided PSH haters with one lonely place on the internet to vent... it's not a popularly held conclusion but a deeply committed one with countless case evidence to back it up ;)

Wow, I can't believe someone doesn't like Phillip Seymour Hoffman either! I've been out in the lonely world for a while on this one. I think he comes across as very actory, very fake in everything I've seen. Is there anything good he's done? I'm still mad he won the Oscar over you-know-who...

one of the best movies ever. seriously.
