Last Minute Jitters

I would just like it to be known that I suddenly feel like there are going to be a ton of surprises and that AVATAR is going to win

UPDATED: I am glad that my jittery pre-drunken prophecy did not come to pass. But my party was already hopping when I posted this and I really just posted it to say how thrilled I was that there was so much color in the dresses. So much color with few ladies opting for basic black.

You are drunk!!:p

Is Meryl wearing one of her costumes of Death Becomes Her??

Dean said...

Are you popping crazy pills at your party???

Burning Reels said...

Well done Christoph - nice little speech

Enjoyable intro by Steve and Alec...a little stiff here and there but some very funny lines

Anna said...

What kind of drugs have been slipped into your punch? Avatar has zero chance, as far as I'm concerned! Haha

Lara said...

Nat, sweetheart, it helps if you drink still water in between, the hangover won't be that hard.

Burning Reels said...

First minor surprise in Adapted Screenplay - I guess the Up in the Air steam really did lose it's way and it shall now be winnerless...could Sidibe be smiling later?!

PJ said...

Clearly Nat wasn't drunk regarding the surprises. Gabby for Best Actress?

Burning Reels said...

Well done Mo'nique - performance not the politics...there's something to ponder...

James T said...

PJ, that would be lovely!

Unknown said...

LOVED Mo'Nique's speech. She was right to call folks out on the politicking. Also loved the surprise win for "Precious" in the screenplay category. Won't be shocked at all of Gabby is named best actress later.

Burning Reels said...

Don't agree with your win Sandy Powell but very smart comment regarding contemporary films and costume designers

Dominik said...

Fuck fuck fuck I fell asleep, I missed Christoph Waltz winning. I suck! Hope it'll be on youtube or somewhere soon... argh....

Anonymous said...

Does anyone else get the feeling that they're presenting the Best Picture nominees in the order they came in during voting? The random order feel a bit TOO random...

Lucky said...

I think it's the first time that a script wins Bafta, BFCA, the Golden Globe and the Guild Award and doesn't win the Oscar. Weird. Up in the Air is like the Brokeback of writing.

Burning Reels said...

The Hurt Locker wins sound editing - i'm sensing a sweep...

Lucky said...

yeah, I was kinda hoping they would spread the wealth a little more this year. Now there's no way Avatar's wining.

Dominik said...

Hurt Locker wins everything. So Cameron has no chance. I don't have to run amok. So Nathaniel is drunk... *lol*

Dean said...

Yeah the order the picture nominees are being presented in sure is suggestive.

monkey said...

I think meryl streep and jeremy wil win beacause this might not mean anything but how they had the lead actors in a random order

Burning Reels said...

If Hurt Locker would of nailed the cinematography or score win, then I would be very confident

But it didn't...

Lara said...

Yay, editing for The sexy Locker!

honduran said...

I´m not feeling too confident about the hurt locker ....:(

Burning Reels said...

So Sasha, Tapley and co were correct about the Argentina entry - anybody seen this film - worthy winner?

Unknown said...

Michelle Pfeiffer paying tribute to Jeff Bridges. Nate has to be on cloud nine.

Lucky said...

Julianne Moore AND Michelle Pfeiffer on the same stage? Nat's got to be having an Actessexual Orgasm!

Fernando Moss said...

MICHELLE PFEIFFER! IN RED! LOVE HER!

Burning Reels said...

Haha you guys beat me to the Nathaniel creaming himself line...

Lovely lovely speech Michelle (easily the best of the five) - Jeff Bridges, Best Actor Oscar winner - so deserved:)

We had Michelle, Julianne, Kate Winslet and Jeff Bridges all in a matter of moments - the talent overwhelms me!

honduran said...

Best Actress! Cant wait! Carey or Gabby, please!

honduran said...

!!!!!!

The Pretentious Know it All said...

Taste these words in your mouth:
"Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock."
How do those words taste coming out of your mouth?
Like vinegar.

honduran said...

Sad about Carey, but

Kathryn Bigelow!!! YAY!

The Pretentious Know it All said...

So just so we're clear, the tally is
Sandra Bullock - 1

Julianne Moore/ Michelle Pfeiffer/ Glenn Close/ Sigourney Weaver/ Kathleen Turner/ Angela Bassett/ Debra Winger/ Emily Watson/ Annette Bening/ Samantha Morton/ Laura Linney - ZERO

Happy Ending! At least.

Burning Reels said...

We never do get those big surprises anymore do we?!

Ah well...

Highlights:
Jeff Bridges (and all that was around him!)
Mo'Nique's speech
Sandy Powell's speech
Streisand handing over to Bigelow - smart choice

Lowlights:
The Original Score dance routine
Young Victoria winning best costume
The usual cutting off the winners' speeches

The Know Nothing, it's tragic isn't it?

Are you JOKING me? No liveblogging past 8:30 and the last big of sagistic Oscar advice is that Avatar would win?! Fuck you, you've gotten so insanely lazy this year...you aren't even covering Kathryn Bigelow's win, which you supported, or anything else. Do you understand WHY people read your blog? What people come to you for information regarding on days like this?

I'm a loyal reader and I'm insanely disappointed. Not to say I can't form my own opinions, but come on...this is your JOB.

Anonymous said...

Michelle Pfeiffer presented Jeff Bridges' Oscar-nominated performance and you choose not to write a word about it as it happens? What's the point of having a blog?

Burning Reels said...

Haha then you pay him to be your blog slave 'anon'!

He's probably enjoying himself at his party - that not allowed?!

Dominik said...

So... no surprises this year! I'd really love what you've suggested before... all voting bodies having to vote at the same time next year... they're so copying each other... glad to see Kathryn Bigelow holding two oscars in her hands though... g'night everybody!

Lara said...

YES! So happy for The Hurt Locker and Kathryn Bigelow and everyone involved!
A bit sad that IB didn't win anything besides supporting actor.
and, the know nothing know it all, I feel your pain.

Anonymous said...

Well, there's ad revenue and other reasons for having a popular blog...it's not like he does this for his health. It's not fair to give up on the biggest night of the year when you have thousands of people looking to read your reaction to the event you spend months building up to.

adam k. said...

Um, dude, anonymous, this isn't his job.

Cue Nathaniel saying "I wish!"

Sandy Powell's speech was indeed awesome. LOVED her. The whole diva-esque walk to the stage was classic.

I actually really enjoyed seeing Sandra win too, despite my critical faculties. She's just so darn likable. And career-wise, the win made sense.

But the real highlight was seeing the whole Sexy Locker crew up there at the end. It was so obvious who the cool people were all season long. The Queen of Directors and her man harem brought out the sexy in full force. Man, I keep imagining the crazy drunken orgies they must've had on those hot nights during the shoot in the Jordan desert... and I'm only like 60% kidding about that... all those guys seem SO bi-curious/persuadable... and there's not much else to do in the Jordan desert, after all...

Congrats to that whole team. Well deserved.

@anon. It's not his job; it's his hobby.

honduran said...

Anon that´s not the way of saying things, be polite.

And yes Nathaniel i hope to see more covering this year, love your work though, been following you since 2006-2007 season. Keep up your good work. That´s what makes this blog really awesome :).

Anonymous: Why you so mad, bro? Big James Cameron fan? This is not Nathaniel's job, it's his HOBBY; a hobby he spends an inordinate amount of time, effort and creativity on. You can bet that tomorrow and in the coming days there'll be a deluge of Oscar talk on this blog, but tonight let him enjoy his party.

James T said...

Happy, happy, happy!!

It's funny that I did a live-blogging for myself. I actually had a good time doing it.

Agustin said...

all those anonymous can go to hell
you don't fuckin pay him
i really liked sandy powells acknowledgement to people not working on epics and dead monarchs movies..
also loved moniques anti politics speech
I'm glad for my country for its second win, but having seen The White Ribbon I'm kind of disappointed. haven't seen the other 3 though
and i hated how they cut off the speeches, they went with other peoples shots, so you didnt notice they were cutting them off, really tacky
I love NPH but only understood half of what he said, probably sound problems..
I'm really glad, though, that the best of the 10 won.

Robert Hamer said...

Hellz. To. The. Yes.

Kathryn "hotter than hot" Bigelow actually won Best Director! For the year's best film, no less!

honduran said...

Lets forget about anon, i´m so happy for Kathryn Bigelow right now!

Jacob Passy said...

To anonymous:

I shall come in defense of Nathaniel again, as many others have. He never live-blogs the Oscars. If you were a loyal reader, you'd know that.

Besides, what could he say that you didn't know already - especially since your presumably watching them yourself.

Tact, people, tact. Be thankful that Nathaniel still does this year after year, for our (and his) pleasure.

James T said...

Nathaniel is

1) an Oscar lover

2) a blogger

He had to either enjoy the show to the fullest or watch it and post stuff.

Anonymous said...

Cannot believe Avatar lost, it is defining piece of cinematic history, a mindblowing piece of moving art, and it lost to a movie that had a terrible 3rd Act.

Anonymous said...

If only. Save for Kathryn's win and Jeff's repeat of Kate Winslet's audience call from last year, this was a rather boring show.

Lucky said...

It was so cool to see Bigelow win, but everything was kinda staged in a way. It's obvious they knew she was winning. Barbra Streisand presenting? Best Actress after Best Actor? Ok, that might be kind of a stretch, but they never do that.

And also, I'm so happy Kathryn won for a "boy movie", and she never played the "woman card" in her previous speeches when it could've been so easy to do so.

I'm happy El Secreto... won, 'cause I'm from Argentina, but it's kind of bittersweet too, 'cause nobody really thinks it deserved it. I should watch the nominees. Nice shoutout to Chile.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous......please step into the real world and get a freaking LIFE. So you like his blog, you think that gives you some kind of entitlement on his time? Lunacy

Bryan said...

I think I prefer having previous category winners presenting the best actress and actor oscars instead of their co-stars.

How does everyone else feel? Did you like this year's presentation of actress and actor more or less than last years?

Burning Reels said...

I enjoyed parts of it Brian - at least the previous winners were presenting the actual statue..it was a nice mix but of course whether you get a pretty speech or not directed at you is solely dependent on whether that person is a good public speaker or not

The Fabulous Baker Boys nostalgia was definitely one of the moments of the night..i'm in the mood for watching it again!

Burning Reels said...

Sorry, Bryan:)

Dominik said...

@Bryan: the winner of the same category opposite sex past year presenting... that's perfect, and has always been! So next year's presenters should be: Christoph Waltz, Mo'Nique, Jeff Bridges and (alas) Sandra Bullock

Robert Hamer said...

"...it is defining piece of cinematic history, a mindblowing piece of moving art..."

Give me a fucking break.

Caroline said...

For all the changes they put to the telecast, it was no more interesting than last year's. For some reason, it just didn't feel very Oscar-ish.

Maybe that's because we had TAYLOR LAUTNER, MILEY CYRUS, KEANU REEVES, ZAC EFRON and a shitload of other irrelevant actors (Demi Moore? What?) present awards?

Much as I love Neil Patrick Harris, that number was useless. The John Hughes tribute was outrageously long when you think about all the other geniuses who never got the time of day at the Oscars, and the fact that 3/4 of the aging audience had clearly never seen his movies.

And Jason Reitman and Tarantino lost their screenplay Oscars? Fuck that. Did anyone care about the screenplays for Precious or The Hurt Locker?

Only good part of the evening was when Kathryn Bigelow won and when the camera panned to Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem sitting together. I wish Jack Nicholson would come back :(

And the anonymous guy can screw himself. Nathaniel does such a tremendous job all year and surely deserves a well-deserved break on his favorite night.

Glenn said...

Yeah, if Nathaniel was getting paid money to liveblog the Oscars then I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate, but he's not so he decided to spend the evening in the company of friends after slavishly devoting so much of his time to awards coverage. You're a joke, anon.

I should say, after that, well done Nat. Another great season!

I liked the winners, but the show itself was a disaster. DISASTER.

Unknown said...

About the five presenters: I'd say it was hit-and-miss this year, as it was last, but I think if they did it every year I'd hate it. Also, it was a little overkill also having last year's winner come out and read the names again, plus what was Sean Penn talking about?

Derreck said...

Of course it's always the anonymous who talks the most shit about you.

Anyways, there were ZERO surprises (Tom Hanks doing Best Picture?) but this Oscars felt more swift this year.

And i'm still gushing at Gabourey Sidibe's little swish/sashay move when she was first introduced with the rest of the nominees. Oh. yes.

I loved Mo'Nique's speech about being about the PERFORMANCE, not the POLITICS. Excuse me, but i just have to say this,

YOU GO, GIRL!!!

and when i saw Michelle P., i only thought of Nat squealing in delight at the T.V. lol.

and i'm upset that Nicole Kidman wasn't there, but she said previously that she probably wouldn' t be.

NATHANIEL R said...

hey everybody!!!

hope you had fun. I sure did.

i'm glad my last minute not quite drunk yet but insane jitters (i always get them right when the show is starting) were wrong (about avatar) because i waanted THE HURT LOCKER to win.

and yes... i FREAKED out when Michelle Pfeiffer and Julianne Moore were sharing the stage. Not only sharing it but STANDING NEXT TO EACH OTHER.

oh. my. god.

Joseph said...

I don't know Nathan Rogers but he seems like an awesome guy.

P.S. ALL HAIL QUEEN BIGELOW.

honduran said...

I´m really happy u enjoyed the night, keep having fun! Hope this year brings us same quiality films.

And thanks again for your work in this blog, i live in Honduras and there´s not a lot going on about award shows, not even filmmaking, so im glad to find a site where i can get resources and coverage of the award shows and film industry.

Keep it going.
