Today's Screenings

The Caine Mutiny (1954)
This was the second biggest hit of 1954 and also an Oscar nominee for Best Picture. Audiences and Academy voters were stupid back then, too. Some things never change.

Once & Again -another couplea episodes
I'm a third of the way through the first season and if ABC doesn't find it in their hearts to put the 2nd and 3rd season on DVD I may become violent.

Melinda & Melinda (at the theater)
Great concept. so-so to good execution. Look, I'm never going to tell anyone to skip a Woody Allen picture unless it has Jade Scorpion in the title...so take my thumbs-up with a grain of salt if you are a Woody hater. The premise here is so good it makes up for a lot says me... And it's always a pleasure to see Brooke Smith onscreen. She does not work enough. If you don't know who Brooke Smith is, shame on you and here is your triple-feature viewing assignment: Silence of the Lambs, Vanya on 42nd Street, and Series 7: The Contender. If you're not a fan afterwards...

Okay, everyone take a deep breath, cause I'm about to make a sports analogy (stop your laughing). I think Woody fans are much like Red Sox fans - we're totally committed to the team, we're resigned to the fact that they're going to lose (never able to live up to past glory), but we have eternal hope. The Red Sox just won (right?), sadly, I think, we Woody fans are just going to have to keep the faith.

(and yes, The Caine Mutiny sucks)

That's totally right.

I loved her in the Contenders. Bloody Mama.

Brooke Smith rocks!! She was uber-fantastic in Series 7. She has a supporting role (hopefully big- she's listed fifth on imdb) in the highly anticipated upcoming Curtis Hanson/Diaz/Collete/MacLaine film, In Her Shoes. *Crosses Fingers for some recognition*

"The girl in the pit" = Catherine Martin. She was pretty good in that. Don't think she'll be able to get past Diaz, Colette, and MacLaine for major recognition for "In Her Shoes" though. She's not exactly a "name" the way all of them are, and I doubt her role will be the juiciest.

The Caine Mutiny???! Are you scraping the bottom of the barrel, or just on a 1954 kick?

I think I saw it like six months ago and was just blown away by how bad it was... the worst part, in my opinion, was José Ferrer. Blech... and that guy that plays the lead: cute but man what a wooden performer!

I saw the Woody Allen movie tonight and feel much the same way you do about it. What it gives me more than anything is hope that Woody may be great again. There really are some inspired moments: the scene on the couch with Ejiofor and Mitchell comes to mind especially.

well, how many times has a director made a stinker followed by a brilliant movie? I think Anything Else was a baby step, Melinda & Melinda is a todler step and then... hopefully the next will be a great one.

But then, I'm more of a fan of Woody's early 90's stuff than the Annie Hall's so he won't be able to please everyone.

And... i still can't believe "Anything Else" hasn't been released in Australia yet.

...!!!!!
