Take Three: Harry Dean Stanton

Craig here with this week's Take Three. Today: Harry Dean Stanton

Take One: One of the Lynch mob

Stanton has been on regular staff rotation for four David Lynch flicks. (Four-and-a-half, if you include TV oddity Hotel Room.) From 1990 to 2006 Stanton provided characteristic screen goodness for a quartet of Lynch's most enduring works. Chronologically he’s contributed to: Wild at Heart (1990), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), The Straight Story (1999) and Inland Empire (2006). He was great as, respectively: disorderly PI Johnnie Farragut tailing lovers-on-the-lam Sailor & Lula; Carl Rodd, irritable and dishevelled proprietor of the Fat Trout trailer park; frowzy front porch frowner Lyle Straight, estranged brother to lawnmower man Alvin; and Freddie Howard, dilapidated Hollywood has-been, both on-set and off-guard.

“I’ve already gone places” HDS laments his lot in Fire Walk with Me

They are sad-sack characters, all. Apart from Wild at Heart – his most substantial role for Lynch – he has little more than one big scene in each film. But he makes his singular moments count. His Lynch mob doesn’t vary wildly, and they’re all vividly ragged extensions of the HDS persona. I could watch him yap like a hyena in bed, as he does in Wild at Heart, and be eternally happy; I could listen to his dog anecdote from Inland Empire ten times and still manage a smirk; I could watch, and watch again, his eyes well up with tears out of trance-like regret over either the arrival of an old crone (Fire Walk with Me) or the arrival of an estranged brother (The Straight Story) and be more and more moved each time. What is it with Stanton’s Lynch figments that swerve the fatty showmanship of so much character acting and zero in on the uncanny emotion of life in minute ways? Every auteur could do with five minutes of Stanton’s blue collar characterisation in every one their best films.

"Oh Marietta Honey." HDS laments his lot some more in Wild at Heart

Take Two: x2 from 1979

Stanton’s been making films consistently for the last 54 years; it’s rare one goes by in which he’s not adding fine support somewhere or other. (Apart from 2008, Stanton has made films every year since his uncredited debut in Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man in 1956.) The early ‘70s saw him hit his stride, and 1979 saw him find his very own career groove. The two, key films he made in ‘79 were: Alien and Wise Blood. (He also made The Rose that year, and very good he was in it too.)

That's not Jonesy the cat! HDS is about to experience some Alien intervention

His Brett in Ridley Scott’s Alien was perhaps one of his most fondly recalled roles.

Birthday Suits, Funny People

Your cinematic birthdays for December 1st. This post is dedicated to frequent reader/commenter Chris Na Taraja who celebrates the big 4-0 today. Happy Birthday, Chris!

1521 Takeda Shingen, Japanese warlord who Kagemusha tried to impersonate. Oopsie. I've actually never seen that Akira Kurosawa picture. How quickly should I rent it?
1913 Mary Martin, broadway star of Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and South Pacific fame. Those famous roles hit silver screens, but without Mary
1935 Woody Allen, legend (abundant posts)
1940 Richard Pryor, influential comedian
<---- 1945 Bette Midler the divine. In a fit of complete absence of budgeting sense I nearly purchased a flight to Vegas and a concert ticket last month. Just because. I've never seen her perform on stage but I did used to love her in the movies. Particularly: The Rose, Beaches (so underrated... weepies can't get no respect) and Big Business
1951 Treat Williams enduring B lister. Among the highlights: Hair, Prince of the City, being married to Michelle Pfeiffer in The Deep End of the Ocean, and memorably seducing an underage Laura Dern in Smooth Talk
1955 Verónica Forqué "Kika" herself, a three time Almodóvar alum
1956 Julee Cruise, the haunting siren voice of Twin Peaks

"The World Spins" one of my single favorite scenes on television ever.
Although it doesn't really work out of context. So sorry

1958 Candace Bushnell aka "Carrie Bradshaw" minus the perfection of SJP
1961 Jeremy Northam I bought the Gosford Park soundtrack just to hear him sing over and over again

1967 Nestor Carbonell tv series regular (Suddenly Susan, Lost, Kim Possible), occasional screen actor (The Dark Knight) who may or may not nab the famous "Khan" role in the sequel to this year's smash Star Trek reboot
1970 Sarah Silverman who is no longer f***ing Matt Damon
1971 Emily Mortimer (right) fine actress, Mrs. Alessandro Nivola. Not shy about her bod either, witness Lovely & Amazing in which she poses for a lengthy inspection or Young Adam in which she lets Ewan McGregor rub custard and ketchup all over her. But then again... who wouldn't? Next up for Emily: a key role in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. More on that here.
2005 Violet Affleck, Spawn of Bennifer, beloved by all gossip blogs.

DVDs: Spidey, Stanwyck, And A Slice Of Cherry Pie

Howdy folks! JA from MNPP here, bringing you the dish on what DVDs are arriving today at the local Stop 'N Shop for that most All-American of pastimes: the pursuit of unfettered consumerism.

Spider-Man 3 - I wasn't as derisive towards this third installment of the web-slinging series as most - for one, I enjoyed the goofiness of Peter Parker's emo-slide into the evils of hair-dye and musical sequences - but I'll certainly admit it's the sloppiest and least satisfying of the trio. What worried us fans beforehand - too many villains! - turned out to be the case, and the film feels rushed like a shoddy superhero suit, bursting its seams. Edna Mode would have had none of this nonsense.

Talk To Me - Don Cheadle and 'Chewie' Ejiofor (he lets me call him 'Chewie', by the way) spar as real-life D.C. radio personality "Petey" Green and his producer Dewey Hughes, respectively. Directed by the terrific Kasi Lemmons (Eve's Bayou).

El Cantante - I had nothing to say about this when it came out in theaters; I have nothing to say about this now that it's on DVD. I just hope it means I'll never have to watch J-Lo shake her behind in my face ever again. It does, right? Right???

Boob Tube Box-sets - Big day for TV-on-DVD lovers!
Twin Peaks: The Definitive Gold Box Edition - I've been waiting for this entire series to come onto DVD for years. I've never seen a single episode, nor Fire Walks With Me; I've been waiting for the entire run to become available. So I'm tinkled pink that the day's finally arrived that I can now know what the hell a Log Lady is.

My So-Called Life: The Complete Series - This came out in a super-expensive box-set a few years back that's been basically impossible to get one's hands on for about as many years, so this lower-priced re-release (of sorts - it looks like there are new extras added on, including an audio commentary by Angela Chase herself!) will mark the first time I'll see the episodes since their initial run, wherein I fell hopelessly in love with Jordan "So you, like, read and stuff?" Catalano... I fear the power of that old flame could consume me once again.

From The Vaults
Barbara Stanwyck: The Signature Collection - How crucified will I be for admitting on this site that I'm fairly certain I've only seen a single Barbara Stanwyck film (that being Double Indemnity)? I know for certain that I've seen none of the films on this set, which includes Annie Oakley, East Side, West Side, My Reputation, Executive Suite, Jeopardy and To Please A Lady.

So tell me about her in the comments. What should I see? What am I missing here?

Random Lynchian Thought

"...fire ...walk ...with ...me"

Why is it that David Lynch can always scare the crap out of me?

And why do I always get the sense that the actors helping him are as unnerved as I am by their own efforts? See also: Naomi Watts in Mulholland Dr, Laura Dern in INLAND EMPIRE, Grace Zabriskie in Twin Peaks, etc... it's not just "Bob"-channeling "Laura Palmer" here.

Do any of you worry for their sanity while you watch his movies. Or do you just find yourself craving cheese?

T H R E E

As promo'ed on Friday, the Film Experience Blog turned 3 years-old on this busy busy weekend amidst all the festival coverage.

We celebrate as we always do... with Lists!

Nathaniel's 3 favorite...
movies with 3 in title: 3 Women ('77), Trois Coleurs ('93-'94), The Three Faces of Eve ('57)
3rd installments of a franchise: Ouch. This one is tough since #3s tend to astonish with their capacity for suckage (see also: this summer's releases) but I'm gonna go Trois Coleurs: Rouge (1994), Alien³ (1992) --yes I mean that, Cremaster 3 (2002)...though, technically, it's not the third is it since they weren't made in order
directors: Hitchcock, Almodovar, Allen (give or take many others)
books: The Great Gatsby, Le Petit Prince, Inside Oscar
tv shows: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Once & Again, Twin Peaks
foods:
pad thai, coffee, anything w/ cheese (none of these inside the theater please)
mythological creatures: medusa, centaurs, lost silent films

actors about whom I have impure thoughts: Jude Law, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Brad Pitt
foreign movie stars (all time): Catherine Deneuve, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Liv Ullman
michelle pfeiffer performances:
Susie Diamond (1989), Catwoman (1992), Ingrid Magnussen (2002) all of which she should've won Oscars for. Yes, in my world she has three.
childhood obsessions: Olivia Newton-John, The Muppets, Gene Kelly
nonhuman film characters:
The Tin Man (The Wizard of Oz, 1939), Smitty (The Awful Truth, 1937), Pris (Blade Runner, 1982)
movie stars (classic): Natalie Wood, Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland
movies (ever):
West Side Story (1961), Manhattan (1979), number three changes all the time so stop asking (1915-2002)
cinematic moments most likely to entrance me: a strong musical number, a good close up (if they've been used in moderation and if the filmmaker has the good sense to not cut away after 2 seconds), a woman lying to herself

Hump Day Hotties: TV Characters

I was seriously not feeling it today, the selection of some random star to drool over. So: something different. There’s a listing meme sweeping the blogs now occasioned by our master Joss Whedon naming his 25 fav TV characters of all time. My blogbuddies Stinky & JA took up the task as well. Now as I’ve remarked many a time I don’t watch a lot of television (relatively speaking) so today’s Hump Day Hottie is the 25 Hottest TV characters according to moi. Some of which I’m embarrassed about. But lists are always confessionals, aren't they?

25 Rachel from Friends. I know. I know. I'm totally Team Jolie but in the first several years of this show: hot! (My favorite hairdo was the long impossibly sleek version)
24 Dark Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Reg'lar Willow is too pure to be pink. But Dark Willow? Rowwwwrr. Love the gay foreshadowing.
23 Dr. Mark Greene from ER. I'm sorry. In those first few years I just wanted him in the worst way. So adorably bald and soft lipped.
22 Samantha from Bewitched. Wasn't just the nose but that helped.
21 Chachi from Joannie Loves Chachi . I apologize.

20 Sammy Jo from Dynasty. White trash nouveau riche is no longer even remotely hot. Nobody will ever do it better.
19 Alex P Keaton from Family Ties. The only Republican I'd sleep with.
18 Maya from Space: 1999. Shapeshifting sexiness.
17 Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yeah, I got sick of him too. But for a good long while it was pure yum.
16 McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy. He gets so much sexier every decade he will be causing spontaneous multiple orgasms in the entire world populace when he hits 90.
15 Six from Battlestar Galactica. She terrifies me. And apparently with my actressexuality, that's a turn on. I didn't know.
14 Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. *sigh*
13 Claire from Six Feet Under. Why didn't she win 100 Emmys?
12 Laura Holt & Remington Steele from Remington Steele.
11 Kelly Garrett from Charlies Angels. I know this is such a K-Mart Middle America choice. But I'm a midwestern boy and as a little kid I thought she was the prettiest person ever. I knew that Sabrina was cooler and Jill was foxier but it was Kelly all the way for me.

10 Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly
9 Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. (prev. post)
8 Jordan Catalano from My So Called Life. Like Angela, I'm helpless.
7 Batgirl from Batman.
6 Chris Keller from Oz. I hate this show. But Chris Meloni? Damn.<
5 Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks. I love every single thing about him --especially the way he disarms everyone around him with nonsequitors and contagious enthusiasm.
4 Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & The City . Some of the credit has to go to Patricia Fields, genius costumer, but SJP is hot stuff. I don't care what anyone says.
3 Rick & Lily from Once & Again. The scene where they sleep together for the first time remains the sexiest thing I've ever seen on my television screen.
2 Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer "five by five" And a "10"
1 Michael from thirtysomething. Ken Olin, Mmmmm. (prev. post)

My Favorite TV Dramas (Ever)

Gotta take those Oscar breaks to keep on breathing. Herewith my 10 favorite tv drama series ever... (give or take something I forgot. and obviously based on childhood favorites mixed with current passions --and obviously i don't much care for hospital or cop shows like the rest of the world)

Discuss. Or share your favorites. First person to say Law & Order must recite a 10 minute expository monologue and then hang their head in shame.
