I Could Never Be Your Comeback

Continuing the brutal saga of "will we EVER see Michelle Pfeiffer again?" seems there's yet more trouble for MGM's plans for I Could Never Be Your Woman which they've moved at least thrice now. You can read about it at Variety if you're following this infernal wait for the return of the great one.

I was shocked that MGM handled Casino Royale so superbly this fall --but maybe that was all Sony. It's not MGM's usual MO, the deft handling of hot properties. They screwed up royally with Hotel Rwanda in 2004 --Not a great film but one that could have gone much much further with audiences & awards with a different studio behind it. Anyway, I had allowed myself to hope that even if I Could... weren't any good, it could still be a hit for the romcom market: quality is seemingly not a factor for success determinatino in this genre which tends to rely mostly on casting combos to excite its audience and the Rudd/Pfeiffer match seemed curious and inspired.

Will this film ever get released?

...the article doesn't really state that the film is getting delayed though, does it?
or am I just as blind as a bat?

Beau, they have changed the release from Valentine's Day to March 2, now the official site just says COMING SOON, so who knows when it's coming out now(it was previously slated for July, then September, then July again, and I even read a December date as well). I think this has more to do with Bauer Martinez than MGM. Bauer bought the rights to Harsh Times, then screwed the marketing for that film up big time, but it's not a big surprise, they're run by a former con and a hack.

oh and the trailer for "I Could..." was supposed to be played with "The Holiday", but since there is no official release date anymore, they pulled it. That would have been the perfect audience for it, and a pretty decent sized one, since The Holiday had a good opening at the box office

Really? I thought the Holiday didn't do that well. It seems set to make MUCH less than its budget.

maybe youre right Adam, I dont know what its budget was. I think it opened with like 18 million?

The Holiday's budget was apparently $85 million. Probably a quarter of that was Cammy Diaz's salary, but there you go. Ridiculously high budget for a rom-com.

$25 million with little more to go does not hold up well to an $85 million budget. Sucks for Winslet. But Meyers' comedies are always bad, and Cameron Diaz is grossly overpaid, so it serves both of them right. I will wait for video for this one.

OMG, Nathaniel, you are just seeing Borat??? The rest of the world saw that like months ago. I'm curious to hear what you think.

I definitely laughed really hard for like 90% of the running time, but I didn't think it was nearly as brilliant as most do. Though I appreciate it more when I consider that it was a real documentary of sorts, and a lot of those people were for real. Also, Cohen himself was pretty awesome. But I don't think it's awardworthy beyond his perf.

it seems to be an uninspired and rather boring film anyway
