FYC for FB

Film Bitch Award diehards, here's your last chance to brainwash me into your way of thinking. I HAVE TO complete these awards. Too many other things piling up behind them. So, FYC in the comments for Credit/Title Sequences, Character Intros, Cameo or 'Limited' Roles (i.e. they're not crucial to the film, have only one real scene or coulda been dumped in the editing room but made it through) and Individual Scene Categories that you really love. I'm thinking of dumping the line reading category? I might ignore your favorites but, then again, I might not.

This message has been brought to you by Nathaniel's procrastination and lost pages of paperwork (oops & argh).

FYC cameo: Jane Adams in Little Children and Matt Winston in Little Miss Sunshine.

I love these last categories, but it's hard to think of deserving winners there. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with.

FYC: Character Intro
*Frank Costello (The Departed). That lovingly slow close-up of Jack's shady profile. Soon to be iconic.
*Jack Sparrow (PotC2).

FYC: Best Musical Moment from Non-Musical film
*I Want Candy (Marie-Antoinette).
*1812 Overture (V for Vendetta). I hated the movie too, but loved that scene.

FYC: Individual scenes
*By the cottage (Marie-Antoinette)

credit sequence: DWP

Cameo actress: Loretta Devine in DG

don't dump line reading! it's my favorite of your categories. I think probably 3 of the 5 nominees need to come from The Departed, however.

"I'm the guy who does his job. You must be the OTHER guy."

"You want a smoke? You don't smoke, do ya, right? What are ya, one of those fitness freaks, huh? Go f$%& yourself."

"Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe f$%& yourself."

"To me feds are like mushrooms. Feed them shit and keep them in the dark."

I'm sure there's more.

Action scene: The Protector. Tony Jaa in a one shot five minute action scene in a hotel throwing people over balconies, threw tables, and all sorts of awesome.

I second whoever suggested the "Chase Through The Work Site" scene in Bond (so viscersal and wonderfully non-CGI) and the Car Scene in Children of Men.

I would also add the Birth Scene in Children of Men. I spent a moment there pondering whether Clive Owen was ACTUALLY delivering a live baby in front of me.

The scene felt real is the point.

FYC Best Actress in a Cameo Role:

Gwyneth Paltrow, Infamous

Her performance succinctly captures the spirit of the whole film. She tells us what will happen without us even knowing it. For a brief few moments, she makes a mid-performance breakdown in a jazz club seem like the most tragic event in the whole world.

Line Readings:

"I'm Al Gore, I used to be the next President of the United States." -Al Gore, An Inconvenient Truth

"Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe f*** yourself." -Mark Wahlberg, The Departed (there's where the nomination is)

"Please bore someone else with your questions." -Miranda Priestley (I know "That's All" is fabulous, but this one made me laugh the hardest)

Credit/Title Sequences-I don't know why, but the radio buzzing in the background on A Prairie Home Companion sticks out for me.

Character Intros:

James Bond-When else are you going to so revolutionize a character in one scene?

Dalton Russell (Inside Man)-He lays everything out so neatly.

Miranda Priestley-This is the sort of opening a category like this was made for.

The Prom King (Little Children)-With a title like that, it has to be good.

Cameos/Limited Role:
Chus Lampreave (Volver)
I'd say Doug Jones for his limited role in Pan's Labyrinth as the Pale Man, but he was also Pan, so that kind of leaves him out.
Jearlyn Steele (A Prairie Home Companion)

Individual Scene Categories:

The Pale Man (Pan's Labyrinth)-Was there anything as chilling as this scene all year?

The Finale (A Prairie Home Companion)-The enigma of it all

The Birth Sequence/The Descent Down the Stairs (Children of Men)-I was in tears for one, cringing with hope for the other.

And I Am Telling You-It's not going.

For Sex Scene, please don't leave out The Painted Veil.

I'll second this:

Actress Cameo: Mary Lynn Rajskub in "Little Miss Sunshine"

Definately the "Prom King" for best Character Intro!!

J.D. Judge said...

Limited Actor:
- Tommy Lee Jones, A Prairie Home Companion. A thought he was good.
- Clifton Collins, Jr., Babel. He impessed me a lot in Capote, and he impressed me here with 2 minutes of screen time. About that.

Limited Actress (you confused most of us with Shaw and Kirshner in Supp. Actress):
- Sinead Cusack, V!!!!. Oh, who I am kidding? You'll never go for that.
- Chus Lampreave for Volver. Very well done.
- Asia Argento, Marie Antoinette. Who knows if she'll make your list.
- Pam Ferris, Children of Men. I have her in this category, but I don't even know if you liked it.
- You haven't seen Bobby, so...

Opening Sequence:
- Inside Man. The best part of the movie to me. At least top 3.
- Casino Royale. Two kills.
- The Devil Wears Prada. "Suddenly I See". That's why. Good editing.
- The Queen. Very well done.

Credits Sequence:
- Casino Royale. Come on, you know it was awesome. Even if it was too Bondesque. But that's the point.
- Volver - the end credits. Very beautiful.
- An Inconvenient Truth, the end credits. "I Need To Wake Up" is good on it's own, but then with the sliding in and out, up and down, transforming 'tidbits' about environmentalism makes it very good in my eyes.
- The Fountain, yes. Very, well... it fits with the movie.

Musical Moment (Non-Musical):
- 1812 Overture (V!!!! agreed whole-heartidly. But with you...
- Super Freak! Super Freak! 10 y.o. Super Freak!
- Penelope Cruz in Volver. Very beautiful, and good lipsynch on her part.

Action Sequence:
- The African chase scene in Casino Royale. Without a doubt.
- The driving scene in Children of Men. Makes me sad. Damn realistic. [shudders]
- In Monster House, when the house walks. Come on. You have a weakess for the movie, so...
- Anything from The Departed.

Reg. Scene:
- The Queen of England caving in to public pressure, having to survey the damage of her traditions, and getting the flowers from the little girl. Bravo.
- The Queen again, but for the deer. That deer, the deer. Just great.
- The birth scene in COM. The baby really did look real. A great moment in a great film.
- As used in trailer from The Devil Wears Prada, since it seems too late for the opening.

Don't know where to place this:
The entire last half hour of COM. It's everything grand and epic and armrest holding about the film.

Musical Moment (Musical Film):
- Hmm, whatever will you put here? [J-Hud triumphantly plays in the back of my mind] I don't know.

Line Reading:
- EmBlu, "I'm just one stomach flu away from my goal weight." God, she was good.
- Rachel Weisz, "Together we will live forever." The repetition got to me.
- Whoever played the back designer guy, "You're working for Miranda Priestly now. You must be in desperate need of hard liqour." Funny script.
- Michael Caine, "You Fascist pig."
- A forgotten gem: Gretchen Mol, "Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden of Eden, weren't they? When they sinned, they put clothes on." Brava!

Kiss:
- Clive Owen and Julianne Moore. Very creative, I have to admit.

Sex/Love scene:
- Leo DiCaprio and Vera Farmiga, The Departed.

Ending:
- The Fountain. So beautiful.
- United 93. Come on. Although you have mized feelings for the movie, you have to admit: that's an incredible ending.
- V for Vendetta. I thought it was excellent, and that's all that matters.

And probably something somewhere from The Prestige.

I know there's more, but I can't think of anything else.

If you change your mind:

Individual Line Reading
Miranda Priestley (The Devil Wears Prada): The details of your incompetence do not interest me.
Miranda Priestley (The Devil Wears Prada): Bore someone else with your questions.
Miranda Priestley (The Devil Wears Prada): Oh, don't be silly - EVERYONE wants this. Everyone wants to be us.
My favorite: Miranda Priestley (The Devil Wears Prada): No, no, that wasn't a question.
Miranda Priestley (The Devil Wears Prada): Find me that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning.
Izzi (The Fountain): Finish it!
Dwayne (Little Miss Sunshine): You know what? Fuck beauty contests. Life is one fucking beauty contest after another. School, then college, then work... Fuck that. And fuck the Air Force Academy. If I want to fly, I'll find a way to fly. You do what you love, and fuck the rest.
Garrison Keillor: (A Prairie Home Companion): We come from people who brought us up to believe that life is a struggle, and if you should feel really happy, be patient: this will pass.
This is for Mr. Altman: Dangerous Woman (A Prairie Home Companion): There is no tragedy in the death of an old man. Forgive him his shortcomings, and thank him for all his love and care.
Cutter (The Prestige): Every great magic trick consists of three acts. The first act is called "The Pledge"; The magician shows you something ordinary, but of course... it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn"; The magician makes his ordinary some thing do something extraordinary. Now if you're looking for the secret... you won't find it, that's why there's a third act called, "The Prestige"; this is the part with the twists and turns, where lives hang in the balance, and you see something shocking you've never seen before.
Cutter (The Prestige): Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it because you're not really looking. You don't really want to know the secret... You want to be fooled.
Perry White (Superman Returns): Lois, Pulitzer Prizes are like Academy Awards, nobody remembers what you got one for, just that you got one.
