"This One Goes to 11"

That famous line from Spinal Tap is more than appropriate here. My god but there's bombast!

p.s. Cate is a hoot. She's clearly relishing her star mojo... the rest of the cast kind of stares at her in dumb awe, poor things. But then that's basically all Elizabeth The Golden Age requires of them.

I really hope that's a sign you liked it, or at least her. Lord knows I will! Nine more days, nine more days, nine more days... [hyperventilates into paper bag]

Yes, are we talking Oscar-in-the-bag? The extended trailer sure makes it look that way (whilst simultaneously removing any need to actually see the movie any more, obviously).

Is the movie watch-able?

What a waste of Samantha Morton

I dunno, man. RT has it at 30%. That'd better change soon, or else Cate is dead in the water.

At least Jesus didn't weep on this one.

"Cate is a hoot". Spinal Tap comparisons. Not a good sign, imho.

Sounds like Nathanial thinks this is a comedy or a future camp classic. But not a serious film about Elizabeth.

Blanchett looks like she's mugging and gnawing scenery shamelessly in the clips I've seen anway. I think she might be entertaining to watch in a vaguely camp, Joan Crawford sort of way. But not in "she's going to win an Oscar for this" kind of way.

ok...I don't understand how people still think this is a big Oscar magnet. The reviews have NOT been good and most if not all of Blanchett's buzz has abandoned ship and taken refuge under the I'm Not There tree.

"Blanchett looks like she's mugging and gnawing scenery shamelessly..."

I'm assuming she has a good dental plan what with entire pieces of furniture stuck between her teeth

"anonymous 3" -watchable yes. good no.

This is why I can't get on this ludicrous Blanchett pimp train that critics keep trying to foist upon us. The woman is either giving bombastic, theatrical and unsubtle performances or doing impersonations (Hepburn, Dylan, Dietrich in The Good German). Can't doubt her technical precision and skill, but I can't remember the last time I really cared about one of her characters. It should have been Notes On A Scandal, but she seemed implausible and miscast as a weak willed idiot.

I dunno. I just have to shrug my shoulders at all this acclaim that gets thrown her way. I think her technical ability makes people overlook her numerous shortcomings as an actor.

Sounds like The Black Dahlia. Georgeous to look at, filled with big scenery chewing, but really ineptly made.

Anon: So you don't hope Kate gets an Oscar? Some fan you are...

I don't care what the reviews are like, I'm going to see this. It could get 2 thumbs down and a big fat F and I'd still go. The costumes alone should be worth the price of admission. I believe it will either be really good or really bad in a good way. Either way, I'm there.

I'm with Sam on this one; I'm looking forward to it immensely. I adore the first Kapur/Blanchett Elizabeth, and the trailer got me drooling.

That having been said, I thought the recent Mirren HBO Elizabeth was pretty amazing (as indeed was Mirren's performance, which knocked the bejeezus out of her turn in The Queen).

Ditto to Sam's comment! I'd have to be locked away somewhere for months to make me miss this one! ;o)

Whew, I was afraid the BlanchBots had intimidated Nathaniel earlier to make him yet another unquestioning Cate worshipper.

The trailers for this movie have been awful one after the other, as have the clips and the posters.

The bit where Cate is bellowing about hurricanes inside her makes me think she's about to defecate all over the Spanish ambassador or something...

A total camp fest. I wonder, what if John Waters had directed this...

Guys, leave Cate alone. I don't understand those of you who keep saying that she only relies on her acting techniques to act hence she's not a great actress. Well, everything we do requires methods and techniques, and Cate knows how to use them to her advantage on top of her natural talent to act. She's clearly in a class of her own. This storyline of this movie may be terrible, but she's still worth the admission ticket.

I'll say this about the film: It was a wig-raising experience.

i keep thining of her as the new faye dunaway, where is her - blanchett's - career at now too many films too overexposed, and yes i do hope kate w wins an oscar some day,she maybe a dame when she gets it who cares, the winslet will be legendary one day a la meryl streep.

Not really interested in this film, but the reviews for The Brave one are better ( so far, although they aren't that great either).

Do you guys think that Jodie and Cate are out of the Best Actress comp.?

If so, it makes it a lot more exciting especially if Cate's chances are low ( nothing against Cate). I mean this year's race is pretty unpredictable ( with the exception of 3, Ratatouille, Javier Bardem and Atonement).

The film may suck (I don't know) but that still Nathaniel has selected is awesome.

J.D. said...

Well, I think this will be one of those films people will hate, but to hate it's artistry and visuality is practically insane (think Memoirs of a Geisha, kind of). Does that sound close?

Anonymous said...

Where's an actual review of the film?

I can't wait to see "The Golden Age" and see Cate Blanchett in all of her glory again as Elizabeth I.

Though The Golden Age is one long bombastic film, it's 10X more exciting than Memoirs of a Geisha. It's really a shame it wastes the actors, who have to deal with such a boring script. I have to say I enjoyed watching Cate and Clive--it makes me wish they had coupled in Closer.

For me the best Queen Elizabeth I will always be Glenda Jackson in Elizabeth R
