I hope they don't have to be living actors because nobody else but Vivien Leigh could ever play my mother. Actually, she already did, in Streetcar Named Desire. My dad would be played Ben Gazzara with a southern accent. I've always thought they looked alike.

My mother said she would chose Sally Field to play her because of her "spunk" or somesuch thing but I think my mother is lovelier than Sally - I would have chosen Natalie Wood. As for my father - Gregory Peck?

For my mom, Sharon Stone. For my dad, Tom Hanks.

My dad has been asked for autographs by people who have mistaken him for Mr. Bean, but he's far more handsome than Rowan Atkinson! The first person that comes to mind is Steve Martin, that mixture of goofiness and intelligence.

My mam is a little harder to place. Dianne Weist, maybe, if she could do a convincing Dublin accent.

Sam... you must have had quite a colorful childhood if you grew up under the wing of Blance 'kindness of strangers' DuBois. Do tell!

Oops. Totally did not mean for my life to turn into the film Parenthood!

Well... my dad is oddly similar to Mickey Rourke in 'The Wrestler', except... you know... around when I was a kid. All 80's and calling everyone brother.
My mom on the other hand... hmmm... that would have to be Shelly Duvall. Tall, lanky & loopy.
What a strange pair.

Definitely Meryl Streep as my mother, she was a math teacher and Meryl is good with Eastern European accents :-) And as my dad Clark Gable for sure - he's so charming ...

I'm daydreaming now how would a scene between my parents look like played by them - this definitely made my day :-)

Julia Roberts as my mom, Jerry Seinfeld as my dad. My dad has been mistaken for him before.

My mom would be Imelda Staunton and my dad would be Richard Jenkins.

My mom totally would channel Rita Moreno, as mother-dear is also a smart, witty, and talented Puerto Rican who does NOT speak with an accent. As for father, I'd venture to say he looks like a heavier-set Woody Allen, and just as doofy-looking (sorry, pops, but I'm just saying!)

jim broadbent and sally field.

Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman as parents, where do we sign ?

John Pankow and Shelley Long.

Kathleen Turner as my mother and Alan Arkin as my father. Kathleen would have to learn french Canadian inflection and play it with a sort of subdued toughness and a vague sense of tragedy; Alan would have to watch the Helvetica film, soften his movements and take his voice up a few semitones, but the performances are there.

Charles Durning and Lois Smith

Catherine Keener and John Goodman. And throw in Gladys Cooper as my grandmother.

NATHANIEL R said...

easy lowdown... kathleen will totally pull through for you. She's a great actress just waiting for the right role to prove it once more.

erich... we'll make sure to give your mother really long and spooky monologues for the camera!

nate... love that you divided it up to genres. it's so important to cat differently for different tones.

my father = bruce willis, because they look alike.

my mother = laura linney, because she sounded very familiar in the squid and the whale.

Anonymous said...

Ewan McGregor as my mom and Philip Seymour Hoffman as my dad.

Guy Lodge said...

My mom would have to be played by Sissy Spacek for the dull but unavoidable reason that they look spookily similar -- right down to posture and mannerisms. Even strangers have remarked on it.

As for my dad, I need a lanky, scruffy professorial type with a robust British accent -- if Paddy Considine doesn't mind undergoing some ageing makeup, he's got the gig.

Marshall said...

Pernell Roberts and Stockard Channing.

Victoria Abril & Antonio Banderas!!!

Because the're a really sexy couple together (would love to see them act again, together taht is) just like my folks... and there's a very notable resemblance, especially in my mom and Victoria. I look more like Antonio (in his younger days) than my dad but the resemblance is there too.

Plus they're great actors.

My mom looks, sounds and acts identical to Frances Macdormand, it's actually ridiculous

elgringo said...

Jeff Garlin and Kathy Bates...

Dave said...

My dad would be Nick Nolte, my mum Annette Bening. Not because my parents are crazy, but I'd make them so. It'd liven things up.

Anonymous said...

Frances McDormand/Ellen Burstyn as my mom and Tom Wilkinson or Alec Baldwin as my dad. All but Burstyn would require a good deal of aging makeup, of course.

Unknown said...

Mom = Michelle Pfeiffer
Dad = Günter Lamprecht

In a biopic of my life, the actors playing my parents would have to convincingly begin in their mid- to late-forties and get older, so for my mother I would pick Jennifer Beals and for my father Don Cheadle. They're about the right height too, especially if Beals wears heels.

NATHANIEL R said...

fernando if you're telling everyone you look like the young Antonio Banderas... WATCH OUT. people will be leaping through their computer screens.

agreed that Banderas and Abril were an AMAZING screen couple. Too bad that wasn't regular.

Gee-Nee-Us your gender blind casting is awesome.

Without any doubt: Julianne Moore and Clive Owen. Crazy Diane Keaton as my grandma. My grandpa, Jim Broadbent. :)

My Dad would undoubtedly be played by Bruce Willis. Its a well-known inside joke throughout my community that the character of John McClane is based on my dad. mannerisms, hair, altogether badassness... Bruce Willis is the Hollywood version of my dad. My Mom is a little tougher. They don't particularly get along so I suppose someone who could butt heads with Bruce Willis would be clutch. A younger Meryl Streep could've pulled it off. I'm tempted to say Virginia Madsen because of the phone message she left on Giamatti's answering machine at the end of sideways. My Mom is a very caring person

I don't care if Kate Bush is not an actress, she should be one and she should play my mom. And for my dad, Benicio del Toro. It would be like a remake of Scenes from a marriage, just a bit more existential and mattresses would fly off the balcony. Plenty of fights.

My dad - current Kathleen Turner

My Mom - early Kathleen Turner

haha.... you think?

Sorry if anybody struck their head hard with the monitor... ;)

My first thought for my mother was Sigourney Weaver but that was just wish-fulfillment. I then remembered that an actress has already played my mother - Anjelica Huston inBuffalo 66 WAS my mother, it totally freaked me out when I saw the film.

For my father... I have to repeat what Cory said - Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler was a weird, weird flashback creator. Just minus the long blond hair and replace wrestling with... dare I admit it... stripping. Sigh.

rosengje said...

My mother is unavoidably Gwyneth Paltrow. They look exactly alike, much to my frustration, and have the same type of sincere snobbery.

My father would require more delicate casting. Maybe post-bubble Alec Baldwin.

Anonymous said...

Sally Field as my mother. I just can't see anyone else in the role. And Tom Selleck as my dad (but he has to be sporting the mustache to pull it off).

Anonymous said...

well, i'm not sure which actress would be my mother, but Shirley Maclaine's character in 'Postcards from the Edge' is the closest thing i've ever seen to my mom on screen, minus the hollywood career and alcoholism.

my dad would definitely be Jack Lemmon. no contest.

Anonymous said...

Although there isn't a resemblance at all I'd choose Tantoo Cardinal to play my mom. I've always had a soft spot for Gary Farmer; a great Canadian actor. But I'm gonna pick Adam Beach to play my dad (would be a teenage daddy sitch but whatever).

Sam said...

Nathaniel, to give you a taste, in 1948, my mother ran off to New Orleans with a saxophone player. She was 18 and beautiful. Her parents were aghast that she would never debut. As for the rest of it, let's just say she always created enchantment. I should write a play.

Well,
based only on physical ressemblance :
Mum - Joanna Going
Dad - Gabriel Mann.(when young)

Yeah, I was supposed to be a pretty boy!!!

Mom: Natalie Wood
Dad: Walter Matthau

Upon remarriage:
Step-father: Paul Sorvino
Step-mother: Dianne Weisst

rubi-kun said...

Not sure about my dad (Bill Murray maybe?), but my mom is pretty much the female version of Jack Black.

Lorenzo said...

Mom: Jessica Lange.
Dad: Albert Finney.
Just like Billy Crudup's parents in "Big Fish" but with italian accents. Now, if only I looked a bit more like Mr. Crudup...

Garen said...

Maria Callas would come back from the dead and her zombie would play my mom. Chuck Norris would play my dad. And that's not because I'm participating in this absurd chuck-norris-as-badass fad. They actually look alike.

Patrick said...

If he were still alive John Ritter would play my dad and Helen Hunt would play my mom.

Jacob Passy said...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus would take a dramatic turn on the big-screen as my mother. Robert Downey, Jr. would play my father.

The Pretentious Know it All said...

I would cast Anna Deavere Smith and Dennis Haysbert. Smith because she seemed very present and motherly and warm in "Rachel Getting Married," even when she wasn't saying anything.
And Haysbert because the only time my father really talks to me is when he's harassing me about auto maintenance.

NATHANIEL R said...

JA.... stripper?! We must have cocktails soon.

Kamila said...

Meryl Streep: her personality reminds me of my dear mom.

Richard Jenkins: because he is as serious as my dad! And he can be sarcastic too! :-)

Have a nice weekend!

Walter L. Hollmann said...

I feel like Burt Reynolds could play my dad, because both men rock the mustache. As for my mother, it's a toughie. I used to think either Catherine Keener or Mary McDonnell, but that's an Oedipal road I'm not ready to go down. Beth Grant, maybe?

Saltire Flower said...

Don Cheadle and a younger Pam Grier. Also a less sassy Pam Grier. My mother has calmed down with age.

Sally Belle said...

She'd freaking kill me for saying this, but for my mom...young and old, Debbie Reynolds. For my dad, Kevin Kline.

No wonder they got divorced!

Paul Outlaw said...

@ Saltire Flower:

When you consider that Beals and Grier play siblings on The L Word, that would make our biopic DNA kind of incestuous.

Anonymous said...

My mother is absolutely, without a doubt, Patricia Clarkson. My father is harder... Kevin Costner is probably the closest, but I'd choose Dennis Quaid just because I trust him more as an actor.

Anonymous said...

For me, Brenda Blethyn as my mother and Dr David Starkey as my dad (not exactly an actor but anyway...)

Anonymous said...

Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell.

Not that they look anything like my parents, but it would still rule.

NATHANIEL R said...

comahan...are you telling us that you're one of the last surviving members of the human race?

Anonymous said...

my mom would be phyllis from the office

Anonymous said...

Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep - cause I look a bit like like him as a young man and my mum looked a bit like her as a young lady.

richard jenkins and i don't know, my mother is too crazy and unique.. she should play herself, she's an actress

My mom looks and acts like Shirley MacLain....i sometimes wonder if Shirley is actually my mother in an alternate life (that's a past life occuring while your still alive).

My father would probably be most likely Roberto Begnini, but slightly less annoying. No, actually I'm going to cast Cheech Marin (post Cheech and Chong, cuase my father didn't smoke pot)

I have to add that my older brother looks pretty much like John Travolta.

Wow, this explains a lot!
