And you. And you. And you. You're gonna love me...
The Dreamgirls trailer is @ MTV. They sure do want you to think about Chicago when you watch it, don't they? Reminds of the blatant way in which the Shopgirl trailer tried to put you in that Lost in Translation state o' mind with fonts and colors. [thx, ModFab]

I thought Dreamgirls would end up being a huge disappointment when I heard they were finally making the film adaptation, and the trailer confirms my belief. Sure, the singing and dancing will be spectacular, but really, who can ever measure up to Jennifer Holiday's flawless performance of "And I Am Telling You" (God bless YouTube).
The only acting they showed in the trailer was medicore at best, and I have a feeling marketing isn't to blame...
I think it looks good. I ended up going to YouTube for the trailer, I don't know what the hell was happening at MTV.
I'm veeery excited 'bout this. Thankfully I don't have the pre-existing knowledge of having seen it on Broadway. Well, it's a good thing for the film (like with Chicago) but a bad thing because the stage version is always better.
Ugh, I just watched it again, and it still bugs me that they don't mention Jennifer Hudson. They have her BIG song playing as they list the cast and they've obviously gone out of the way to point out she's a main character (moreso than Anika Noni Rose) yet they can't even give her a spot.
Plus, I think Hudson's "And I Am Telling You" works better with the visuals attached. But maybe that's just me.
The trailer is flaccid. They should've played the big number over a montage of quick, heart-quickening clips, and left some of the mystery for the uninitiated. Beyonce will sink this movie, I think. They should've used Heather Headley.
NICE BANNER!!
Whoa, weird new comment format.
I thought the trailer was good, but I have to say, I was rather disappointed with "And I'm Tellin' You..." It does work a bit better with visuals, but it just isn't in the league of JHoll's version.
And I actually thought Beyoncé shined in the trailer. I think she will win the golden globe, even with JHud in the mix. It'll be Chicago all over again.
Hm, I guess that weird format was just a glitch on my computer. It's the same again now.
Also, I wanted to say that yes, the trailer does seem highly reminiscent of Chicago, but at least Bill Condon is ripping off his own film instead of someone else's. Can't really blame him for that.
I think it will be tough for any film performance of "And I'm Telling You" to compare to a live version... I saw Dreamgirls on Broadway without Jennifer Holiday and it was still one of the most amazing performances of a song I've ever seen--I can't recall who was playing the part at the time... I'm sure it will still be great in the movie, just not the kind of moving experience from hearing Holiday sing it or hearing it live.
Witchiepooh (with a new ID)
At least you sorta get the idea that the movie is infact a musical.
And I agree with Adam, Beyonce didn't actually seem to be that bad.
I thought Beyonce looked good, too. Her "You swear?" bit was great.
And I agree with Gerry. They tried way too hard to fit all the songs in, which made the whole thing awkward. Still, I'm loving the look of this film.
I was very anti-Beyoncé until recently, but then I saw this trailer and her interview about the film on mtv.com, and she actually seemed intelligent and articulate, which shocked me. VERY MUCH improved from her dumb-sounding comments on the "Behind the Scenes" Dreamgirls preview clip. I think she will impress a lot of people and work really hard for the nom, and if not for the ridiculous competition this year, I'd say she had a real shot. And she might, now that Bening is flailing. But it's hard to imagine her getting in before Streep, Mirren, Winslet, Blanchett, Dench, or even Cruz. My feeling is she'll come in 7th.
Lest we forget that Bette, Babs and Cher all got nominations (and Barbra won) for their first films. This is Beyonce's first SERIOUS film (let us ignore The Pink Panther mmkay). And Bette and Barbra did indeed win for musicals, although only Barbra won for a traditional one like Dreamgirls.
Of course, that was a completely different time and place and this generation's singers-turned-actors are your J.Lo's, your Beyonce's and your Britney's, which as of now aren't big glowing endorsements. No wonder people are cynical these days about it.
BTW, Madonna was well into a career of flops before she got Evita and that really did work against her I think.
But, yes, despite all this, I think she'll miss out on an Oscar nod, but a Globe nod seems pretty good.
Bette has never won an Oscar (yet), and I think 'Silkwood' was Cher's second film -- 'Come Back to the Five-and-Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean' was the first.
