Oscar Shmoscar: Julianne's Campaign Lives On!

Eye Candy Weekend

Julianne Moore is the NY Times cover star for Women's Spring Fashion 2010. Mmmmm Julie Ann Smith. She never fails to awe in still photography.

The Times claims that she "acts out the complex theater of feminine personae for the photographer Raymond Meier" ...isn't that what she does every time the camera is on her?
Her own description of her character-building for A Single Man (we don't normally hear her talk this explicitly about her process) makes me love the performance more in retrospect
A lot of the character began with a particular vocal choice: she’s someone who is very wealthy, very educated and kind of a party girl. There’s this way of speaking among these women where you don’t know whether they’re posh or hammered all the time. So, that’s where I started. Then I listened to very early Julie Christie, to get the early-’60s kind of sound...
Julianne listening to Julie? Someone needs to make a short experimental film inspired by that.

Click on the photos to take a look at their shoot. If I were a photographer she'd definitely be near the top of my long must-get list. Along with so many others but the ones that just occurred to me while typing away were Anne Hathaway, Jude Law, Juliette Lewis, Olivia de Havilland (for the private audience you know) and James McAvoy. Off the top of my head.

Who would you thrill at capturing on film... and which complex personae would you hope they worked for the lens?

Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Susan Sarandon, Jennifer Aniston, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt pop into my mind.

Moore, I just saw the shoot Kidman did with Peter Lindbergh so her, too. I would also like to capture Ty Burr, Downey Jnr.

I'm not liking this pic of Julianne too much. She looks like a cadaver. It's like a shot right before it widens to reveal the rest of the morgue and the investigators looking down at her.

Gah, it sounds like i've been watching too much movies/TV. Anyways, i'd love some pics of a 'femme fatale' Amy Adams, Viggo Mortenson and a Leo and Kate combo (I love those two together). And of course, Nicole, but i decided to go with the non-obvious first.

It seems this piece has come weeks too late! Still, although I wouldn't have nominated Julianne that laugh was so raucous and wonderful. It felt so connected to the character and it just shows how aware and thorough she is as an Actress.

to think that Julianne Moore studied early clips of Julie Christie to get the early 60s voice correct sends shivers down my spine.

Heard she's seriously considering returning to her acting roots and going back to 'As The World Turns' before the sudster goes off the air later this year. Good for her.

Sorry - I don't know how you check comments, Nathaniel - is it by some kind of alert system, or manual check? In case its the latter, I'm going have to go off-topic here and post my comment to your earlier blog post asking for "best line reading suggestions":

Harry: "Sir!"

It's official, that in addition to Extras, Radcliffe is kind of a brilliant comic performer. Dramatics though, not so much.

Also off topic. But I love the new addition to your banner. Madeline Kahn is a genius.

JAMES FRANCO and PENELOPE CRUZ... would love to have them in crazy outfits all the time in front of a camera (and wouldn't mind having them naked off camera, or ON)

A. Julianne does no wrong.

B. I saw the trailer tonight for Chloe. Thrilled.

C. I think if Precious didn't exist and Julianne Moore was nominated in her place, she would easily win in this group.

D. If she returned to As the World Turns, even if just for a day, I would die. Happy.

Barry and Peter -- that would be BEYOND cool of her to do. I hope she does it. I hate it when famous people forget their roots.

Speaking of Anne Hathaway , I hear she is absolutely brilliant in her upcoming movie (November 2010) "Love And Other Drugs". She is almost guaranteed an Oscar Nomination.

Goddess.

I loved her turn in A Single Man, and the thought of her finally winning in some alternate universe for what I thought was a great achievement (the sloppy speech, the haunting laugh, the intense vulnerability...an underappreciated gem of a performance) is exciting. Too bad it's not to be =(

Girl has had a lot of issues with timing come to think of it. Her work in The Hours, Magnolia, and Far From Heaven easily could have triumped in different years.

1. Was her work in A Single Man a bit under-appreciated on here, maybe? Certainly Madonna couldn't have done it like Moore.

2. OK. She'll do this thing for As The World Turns for 1 day. And then, please, please someone give her a great, meaty leading role in a huge, ambitious film by an established director. Scorsese, Nichols, Eastwood, Ang Lee, whoever, cast Julie Ann Smith!!! She got 4 Oscar nominations in 6 years, and since then she's waited 7 years and still no other nomination. Why is she only offered TV work in the last time?! I don't want her career to be over so soon.

Caroline -- I know exactly what you mean! While watching the Half Blood Prince, I too was surprised at how funny I found that bit (Harry! Sir!). He's pretty good. It would be nice to let his character be more lighthearted and funny more often (he was under the Felix "good luck" potion at the time)

Julianne is not only one of my favorite actresses but also my not so secret crush as well.

I would also LOVE to see her in a musical. I hope some directors were listening.
