Catherine O'Hara. Even though I don't think she's really starring in any movies this year that are going to give her that opportunity, but she's looooong overdue.
Otherwise...Kristen Stewart. Because that would be funny.
Kerry Washington for whatever. She's amazing, deserving, and one of the few black actors out there getting roles meant for white actors. That means a hell of a lot in Hollywood!
Also Jeffery Wright, Alfred Molina, Vanessa Redgrave, Mary Louise Parker, Leonardo DiCaprio, Judi Dench (a lead for heaven sakes!) and Alfre Woodard!
I Imagine the following: Annette Bening (The Kids are Alright) or Tilda Swinton (I Am love) Best Actress Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) Best Actor WInona Ryder (Black Swan) Best Supporting Actress
A number of people involved with Inception. namely Leo and Chris Nolan, both of whom I consider due.
also Jackie Chan for the new Karate Kid movie... I figure if someone who's done nothing but mindless romcoms can win... why not someone who's done nothing but mindless martial arts flicks?
A Leo win - in Best Actor though, none of this Supporting shi-it, please - would indeed be sweet.
And Scarlett Johansson. Hello! Do some work dammit! Best Actress BAFTA at 19. Four Golden Globe nominations by 21. Where's Oscar?...
Also, Gwyneth Paltrow just to be nominated again for... anything. She's actually one of those Best Actress Oscar-winners who's actually gone on to do better work since her crowning.
Helena Bonham Carter for The King's Speech; Ed Harris or Colin Farrell for The Way Back, Ms. Bening - for her very existence; and Ralph Fiennes in Coriolanus (or Leo D.).
To speak my piece: Why has Hollywood left Christian Slater in the "No Hope" pile? No, he's not as classic as Peter Sellers or The Guy He Sounds Like, but he's the most "inglourious" piece of detritus Hollywood has ever tried to excise, and I'm certain that he would have been a better, less favourtist, selection than Eli Roth. He should have had the kind of career that wins Oscars by now, not stooping to stretching his filmography...with an Uwe Boll movie. So, yeah, I want him to win one eventually.
I'd want at least Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams to get their second Oscar nominations. I don't need for them to win since they're both young, but I really want Blue Valentine to be AWESOME.
Julianne Moore and Helena Bonham Carter! I would be overyjoyed if either of these two were to win. Both incredibly deserving, amazing actresses long overdue for the recognition they deserve.
@ Sadner: I don't think the Academy HATES Kidman, she's already gotten one award after all.
I would like to see her at least get a nom for Rabbit Hole (rather than The Danish Girl). Something about which the detractors can't grumble "it wasn't the perf it was the makeup" etc.
Shutter Island and Alice in Wonderland look great, but will probably fall off the Best Picture due to timing. Also, Alice in Wonderland doesn't seem Oscar-y enough.
Then again, The Hurt Locker's in the running, and it was released way before Oscar season.
I second Kerry Washington. For ANYTHING! Get this woman some roles worthy of her talents. And of course Julianne Moore. Maybe Annette Bening for Mother and Child.
"Aaron Tveit for HOWL" Mmm... a sexy golden statue for a sexy golden statue.
Andrew R -- contrary to popular belief, Oscar remembered earlier movies this year. They just did that annoying thing where they only nominate December stuff for anything they're still undecided on.
MAY - UP
JUNE - THE HURT LOCKER
AUG - INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS & DISTRICT 9
OCT - AN EDUCATION & A SERIOUS MAN
NOV - THE BLIND SIDE & PRECIOUS
DEC - AVATAR & UP IN THE AIR
which is a pretty good spread and year-representative.
so who knows. maybe distributors will be less insane about cramming everything into December if they keep doing this.
*crossing fingers but feeling like an incredibly stupid optimist -- watch them push everything back to December again in 2010 and ignore what happened to NINE and THE LOVELY BONES*
Honestly, what's with the reasoning "because they're overdue!" fuck off!! That is such horrible reasoning. Its performance based, its not a battle between career or age. Look where that arguement has taken us, the two frontrunners for best actress are the least-deserving of all the five actresses nominated. And not to mention because sandra bullock got nominated she took The blind side with her. If it just so happens everytime an actor was nominated they had better competition and they didnt win...well,then...that's that. Being nominated multiple times is still a good thing. That means they still have a great career with growing potential, don't label them as overdue and then use that as a reason for them to win and having that win be just. IT'S RIDICULOUS!! Besides, giving an oscar/any reward to any actor for being overdue just creates more "overdue" actors. Just don't get mad cause someone else was better. Poor Mulligan and Sidibe.
Absolutely ANNETTE BENING!!!!! For "Mother and Child" or "The Kids Are All Right", but please, give this woman an Oscar!!! (Julianne Moore also is sooo overdue...)
Of anyone deserving an Oscar today, I hope that the Academy will bestow an Honorary Academy Award to Doris Day. This is an actress who excelled in light romantic comedy, musicals and dramas. Far from a cultural joke (read: virginal) she infused an empowering spunk and vitality in every role she approached. This is an actress who could do it all.
Poppy, I could not agree more. If an actor is going to be overdue when they win, they should win for a deserving performance, a la Jeff Bridges. That said, it pisses me off at the thought that Leonardo Dicaprio will inevitably win an Oscar, even if he never gives a truly deserving performance. Because that's just how it works.
just one? hehe... I want Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close and Kathleen Turner... I know not all of them can win in one year... maybe if one is an Honorary Oscar and two of them tie in one of the actress categories and the other wins the other... I'm out of my mind right?
If the film is half as good as the book, then Never Let Me Go could see both Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan back in the running. I would love to see Knightley in the running, not only because I consider her an excellent actress, but also just to annoy the cap out of her multitude of haters
@ Poppy: Totally agree with you, but I think these speculations are assuming that the performances they win for are deserving, and that their "overdue" status would just be icing on the cake. Think less Paul Newman in The Color of Money and more Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart.
Me again. Been watching some old movies, and I think Eli Wallach could deserve a statue for Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. It would be a neat choice, especially since the cast is almost entirely tilted toward new talent, because even the other old guy has only exposed himself as talented recently. (Sorry Frank Langella, but Eli has been waiting much longer.)
I don't know about winning, but as far as nominations:
DiCaprio for Shutter Island Farrell for London Boulevard or The Way Back Knightley for London Boulevard or Never Let Me Go Kidman for The Rabbit Hole Bonham-Carter for The King's Speech
GayAsXmas - why do you think Knightley gets so much slack? She's delivered several great performances over the last few years. I hope she really delivers in Never Let Me Go... she's got a really baity role that's different from any character she's ever played.
If Carey Mulligan gets nominated for a second time that'd be huge - it normally doesn't happen to young actresses.
Actually, DIANNE WIEST. She's a fierce actress, funny, humble, extraordinary in supporting roles, where she shines at her best!!!!! Rabbit Hole will proof it.
ACTRESS Nicole Kidman, RABBIT HOLE Julianne Moore, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT Carey Mulligan, NEVER LET ME GO *****Natalie Portman, BLACK SWAN***** Hilary Swank, BETTY ANN WATERS
I'd be thrilled to see DiCaprio nom'd for Shutter Island because he really, REALLY is great in it. In fact he'd have been up there with Bridges if the film hadn't been moved back (imo, of course). But I'm kinda glad he isn't because I really want to see Bridges take home the little man finally!! Cool thing I heard is that Mike Medavoy, who Brando appointed as a trustee for his estate, actually told Leo that his perf in Shutter reminded him of Marlon's work when he was a young actor. Would love to see Mark Ruffalo up for something. Ditto Annette Benning and Julianne Moore -- both terribly deserving.
There are so many=) I would love Keira, Julianne, Natalie, Nicole or Bonham-Carter.And Gwyneth to be nominated again. For actors, well Leonardo does sound great.
Are we going to write a book-that's a great lineup, apart from Swank...but unlikely to happen, cuz there are always some first-nomination people in the mix.
two of the most overdue people in the world are in contention this year: Terrence Malick and Julianne Moore so no other name comes to mind for me. although, i have to admit, if julianne and the bening run in different categories, wins for both would be amazing.
The double winners usually win their statues close together, yeah? (Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, Hilary Swank, Tom Hanks, Jodie Foster, etc.) I wouldn't be surprised if Nicole Kidman won for Rabbit Hole. It's a great part in a great play.
Wouldn't it be great if Julianne Moore were able to get nominated for Chloe? I know it's so unlikely, but Glenn Close got in for Fatal Attraction.
Annette Bening for The Kids Are Alright would make me really happy too.
Basically, I'd be happy with almost any of teh year-in-advance predictions.
Robert Downey, Jr. He's my favorite actor, and I think it's a bit ridiculous that he hasn't won an Oscar yet. Sadly, neither of his films next year really seem like "Oscar bait"
Is it possible for Helena Bonham Carter to get a Robert Downer Jr./Tropic Thunder nomination for Alice in Wonderland? That would make me so incredibly happy.
Knightley gets stick because of her weight. I know a lot of people (especially young women I have to admit) who have a visceral reaction against Knightley because they think she epitomises the 'impossibly thin' visual oppression that the media, and especially women's magazines, engages in. In Knightley's case though, its clear she really is just naturally skinny. I respect the fact that she is a young actress who has forged a serious career, largely free from tabloid-baiting situations, and has consistently proven her critics wrong. She reminds me a lot of Natalie Portman in that regard.
I think Helen Mirren has a good chance of another nomination next year for playing "Prospera" in Julie Taymor's "The Tempest". If she's as great as Jessica Lange was in Taymor's "Titus" then I really want to see the movie.
I think voters will be watching her and liking her this year in "The Last Station" for which she has no chance of winning, although I think the part will create goodwill that will carry over to next year. Especially if they're feeling a slight voter's remorse at giving the Best Actress award to Sandra Bullock.
I'd also love to see some of my favorite actors finally win - Edward Norton in "Leaves of Grass" or "Motherless Brooklyn"; Emily Watson in "Ride the Whirlwind"; or Naomi Watts, Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Viola Davis, Rosamund Pike, Joaquin Phoenix (if he ever makes another movie).
Oh my gosh, so many. Nominated: Gwyneth for The Danish Girl. Nicole for Rabbit Hole. Michelle and Ryan for Blue Valentine. Kerry Washington, I agree she's great. I'll go ahead and jump on the Julianna bandwagon just because she's great and she was snubbed this year. Natalie for Black Swan. Saoirse for The Way Back. It'd be interesting to see Christina have a standout performance in Burlesque, although I'm a little scared...Cher with a nice supporting performance would be nice to see. I want to see some veterans get back in the game. Keira or Carey for Never Let Me Go. I'd love to see Dakota Fanning nom'd, but it's not going to happen.
@badmotherfucker, Oh Marion won't get anything for Inception sadly, but I completely agree, she was the best (and arguably the only good) thing about Nine, and Penelope getting a nod was just fuckery considering how amazing Marion was.
Oh, I'd also like to see Jim Carrey or Cameron Diaz get nominated. They're two poor people who the AMPAs just don't like. Twice, Cameron Diaz has been nominated for both a SAG and a GG for a role and she just didn't get that Oscar nod. Jim Carrey should go for a nice dramatic role again and maybe at some point things will go well for him.

Catherine O'Hara. Even though I don't think she's really starring in any movies this year that are going to give her that opportunity, but she's looooong overdue.

Definitely Julianne or The Bening. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I hear they're good!
Is Leonardo DiCaprio supposed to be good in Shutter Island? I could get behind a Leo win.
Right now, for me, 2010 is all about Terrence Malick. I highly doubt it, but an Oscar for Malick would be a nice start to the decade.
CHER for Burlesque.
I Imagine the following:
Annette Bening (The Kids are Alright) or Tilda Swinton (I Am love) Best Actress

Without any doubt JULIANNE MOORE.

I hope Natalie Portman gets in the conversation for Black Swan.
It'd also be interesting if Brad Pitt got considered for a win at some point - maybe Tree of Life can do that?
the Peter Weir movie about the escape from Siberia looks great. And what a cast Colin Farrell, ed Harris, Ronan...
Is it Ed Harriss' time? Better be.
Helena Bonham Carter for The King's Speech; Ed Harris or Colin Farrell for The Way Back, Ms. Bening - for her very existence; and Ralph Fiennes in Coriolanus (or Leo D.).

I'd want at least Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams to get their second Oscar nominations. I don't need for them to win since they're both young, but I really want Blue Valentine to be AWESOME.
MERYL STREEP because she hasn't won this year yet, or the past 27 years!
alas, she has no projects in the works that i know of.
Ellen Page for Inception
Julianne Moore and Helena Bonham Carter! I would be overyjoyed if either of these two were to win. Both incredibly deserving, amazing actresses long overdue for the recognition they deserve.
Mark Ruffalo would do me just fine

Jude, you are awesome for mentioning Aaron Tveit. I want to marry that man.
Shutter Island and Alice in Wonderland look great, but will probably fall off the Best Picture due to timing. Also, Alice in Wonderland doesn't seem Oscar-y enough.
Then again, The Hurt Locker's in the running, and it was released way before Oscar season.

Chris Nolan for Inception
Leonardo Dicaprio for either Shutter Island or Inception
Martin S. for Shutter Island
Tilda Swinton for something she does
Ronan for The Way Back
Benning for The Kids Are Alright
diCaprio for Inception
Rapunzel Best Animated

I have this sneaking suspicion that this might finally be the year for Leonardo DiCaprio and Annette Bening... is that a foolish pipe dream?
Honestly, what's with the reasoning "because they're overdue!" fuck off!! That is such horrible reasoning. Its performance based, its not a battle between career or age. (Julianne Moore also is sooo overdue...)
Jennifer Aniston...so that were done with all of America's Sweethearts and move on to REAL performances!
I would love to see any of these women win:
Tilda Swinton, We Need to Talk About Kevin
Emily Watson, Oranges and Sunshine
Imelda Staunton, Another Year

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine
Tilda Swinton - We Need to Talk About Kevin/I Am Love
Melissa Leo - Welcome to the Rileys/The Space Between
cast and crew of Meek's Cutoff
There's only one option:
MICHELLE PFEIFFER!!!
But of those that have releases slated in 2010 it must be Bening, Moore or La Kidman
James Gandolfini. I know WELCOME TO THE RILEyS isn't supposed to be that good, but still.
I'd like to see Amy Adams get a juicy roll and win this time.
Another oscar for Tilda.
Or mayb someone completely new to surprise us, kind of like that gals from PRECIOUS are doing now.
I'd like to see Matthew McConaughey get away from silly comedies and into some serious drama
And what happened to Billy Crudep
I know this is sad, but I would like to see Tom Cruise do something worthy of an award.
If the film is half as good as the book, then Never Let Me Go could see both Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan back in the running. I would love to see Knightley in the running, not only because I consider her an excellent actress, but also just to annoy the cap out of her multitude of haters
So many people. Bening and Moore for sure.
But I'm also really looking foward to see Olivia Williams in The Ghost Writer, after what I've seen her do in Dollhouse.
Meryl Streep if it doesn't happen this year, Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and some day Natalie Portman.
Laura Linney should win next time, I have no idea for which performance but she should ;)
Emily Watson, Edward Norton those sorta people....
Juliane Moore and Brad Pitt!
Jake Gyllenhaal - nom for Love And The Other Drugs.
Dakota Fanning for Runaways or Gong Li for Shanghai
Julianne Moore,
for either
The Kids Are All Right
or
Chloe.
FilmFan... I can tell you this already... Julianne Moore ain't winning for Chloe. Terrible, terrible film.
Bening or Moore. Or me-I'd certainly like an Oscar this year.
Someone actually deserving!
Edward Norton for "Leaves of Grass"
@ Poppy: Totally agree with you, but I think these speculations are assuming that the performances they win for are deserving, and that their "overdue" status would just be icing on the cake. Think less Paul Newman in The Color of Money and more Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart.
Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole. Now THAT would be a comeback.
Nicole Kidman ... to start the new decade like she did in the last decade...
Sigourney Weaver
David Fincher
JOHNNY DEPP FOR THE RUM DIARY!!!
I dont know if this filñm will be released next year...
ALICE IN WONDERLAND FOR BEST PICTURE!
INCEPTION WON EVERYTHING!
Me again. Been watching some old movies, and I think Eli Wallach could deserve a statue for Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. Any outcome that doesn't give Meryl Streep another pat on the back for "having fun."
Nicole Kidman in RABBIT HOLE.
Actually, DIANNE WIEST. She's a fierce actress, funny, humble, extraordinary in supporting roles, where she shines at her best!!!!!
Rabbit Hole will proof it.
ACTRESS
Nicole Kidman, RABBIT HOLE
Julianne Moore, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Carey Mulligan, NEVER LET ME GO
*****Natalie Portman, BLACK SWAN*****
Hilary Swank, BETTY ANN WATERS
Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole. Word is the release has been pushed back from spring to fall which helps for nominations.
Honarary Oscar for Robert Mitchum. I hope there is no explanation necessary.
I was hoping for some love for Winona Ryder. sigh.. we've forgotten her. How great would it be if she comes back with a great role, ahem, Black Swan.
i don't think they give honorary's to people who have died. mitchum died quite some time ago.
i would love to see angela lansbury or doris day get an honorary. i've read doris day has turned them down & would not travel to award cermony.
would love to see annette bening win. or sissy spacek or julie christie get nominated again.
I'd be thrilled to see DiCaprio nom'd for Shutter Island because he really, REALLY is great in it. In fact he'd have been up there with Bridges if the film hadn't been moved back (imo, of course). Natalie Portman - Black Swan
Saoirse Ronan - The Way Back
Keira Knightley - Never Let Me Go
Malick! Malick! Malick!
Nathaniel, when will the medals be given? And will we have a list of movies you (and other bloggers) anticipate the most this year?
Julianne Moore. And I'll keep saying the same damn thing until she does.
Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole. She needs this
Robert Downey, Jr.
That would make me so incredibly happy.
michelle and ryan for blue valentine
Christopher Nolan! All the way!
Jim T ... i can't do the medals until I finish. (sigh). it's taking me forever!
not sure about that "we can't wait" list. i'll try to find the time.
Two things I'd like to see:
1. Kidman get that elusive 3rd nod (and win) if Rabbit Hole delivers -- and I think it will.
2. Inception grant Cotillard her already overdue 2nd nod (love you, Pené, but we both know I'm right).
I can't believe no one's mentioned EMMANUEL LUBEZKI, you know, the cinematographer who lost the Oscar for THE NEW WORLD and CHILDREN OF MEN?
Gosling or Williams for Blue Valentine.
Javier Bardem in Biutiful¡¡

If Laura Linney is winning anything next year, is going to be an Emmy. She is doing TV now, a dramedy about cancer on Showtime.
Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin for Woody's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger"
I think Helen Mirren has a good chance of another nomination next year for playing "Prospera" in Julie Taymor's "The Tempest". If she's as great as Jessica Lange was in Taymor's "Titus" then I really want to see the movie.
