2040-something

Damnit!!! Despite my obsessive love for Tony Leung Chiu Wai I, like the cinefool I am, did not buy tickets last night for the opening night showing of 2046 tonight and now the latest Wong Kar Wai (presumed) masterpiece is sold out. Tonight I will hone my self-loathing skills and cry myself to sleep. Why did I procrastinate?

Tantalizing Nathaniel w/ tickets to Tony only to tear them away is truly torturous.

That's . . . the saddest thing I've heard all day.

Here's what you can do: watch "In the Mood for Love" again. Bathe in Chris Doyle's lush visuals and take in Maggie Cheung's beauty. Admire it, worship it, love it. Then Saturday, go watch 2046 and be amazed.

Or you can read this rapturous article by Stephanie Zacharek at Salon.com. In the mood for Leung, anyone?

Wow, that's too bad. 2046 is really something. I think you'll be surprised at Zhang Ziyi's maturity. She's amazing (and so is Leung, of course).

This is why I just don't bother to see movies on opening night. I always wait.

OK, completely off topic, but I have to just chip in with a great big THANK YOU for kicking off your 1999 retro awards!

As uber-observant followers of THAT recent Julianne Moore topic comments list may have noticed, I handed Hilary Swank my #1 Best Actress for 1999, with Kate at #2. I have since realised (and it only took 5-and-a-half years) the implications of this...

See, I agree that Holy Smoke is THE best 'Kate the Great' work on film to date. And with Miramax handling the campaign (badly), it still baffles me that they didn't bag her a nomination.

So... my problem is this: if I'm putting Swank at #1 for 1999, then that means I think Swank has given a better performance on film than Winslet has ever given. I possibly won't sleep tonight, because that's just plain WRONG.

My bad.

Oh, and I'd encourage you to seek out Tumbleweeds forthwith, because (a) it's a sweet little film, (b) it's twice the movie that 1999's similarly themed "Anywhere But Here" was, and (c) if you're going to say 1999 was a weak year for actresses, you need to seek out a performance that WILL make your shortlist, and McTeer is outstanding.

Oh wow. Rob nailed it. If Holy Smoke is Kate's best work, it HAS to be better than Swank. Although I really LOVED Swank in Boys Don't Cry. Such a great film. But then everyone in Boys Don't Cry was awesome. Sarsagaard and Sevigny were no less worthy of praise. I think in retrospect that it was all Kimberley Pierce's fault. She did a great job and raised the level of all her actors' work (has she ever done a follow up project, btw?). Kate Winslet, on the other hand, brings her directors up to her level, not the other way around. I really need to see Holy Smoke... I stupidly rented it once and never finished watching it before I had to give it back, before the days of netflix were upon us. As for Kate not even being nominated, I suspect the sentiment behind that snub was something like "WHAT? She's now internationally famous A-lister and she goes an makes an obscure indie? That's bass-acwards." Plus people just didn't seem to "get" it.

Yeah, for as great as the Holy Smoke performance was, it's really not the kind of thing you expect Oscar to recognize.

Ouch. I must agree, that is very sad, Nathaniel. But don't beat yourself up about it...I'm sure there will be tickets available soon.

(Wow, I am supremely bad at offering sympathy.)

2046... SAW IT BACK IN JANUARY HEHEHE.
LEUNG IS SUPERB, ZIYI IS GREAT, BUT DON'T GO THINKING IT'S "IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE 2" IT'S A TOTAL DIFFERENT STORY, DIF. MOOD, DIF. TONE... I THINK IT WAS NOT AS GREAT. SORRY ;)
