ask nathaniel

monday blog vacancy. I turn to you. ask me something. anything. any topic. you can comment or e-mail me at flmbtch(at)hotmail(dot)com --i don't know why i just typed that in the no-spam way since the spam has already found me years ago.

P.S. if your question is something movie related that I want to respond to at length I may add it to an upcoming "reader mail" column on the mainsite. if unrelated to the silver screen it'll go here

Movie related:
1) Given your love for the Beatty/Wood pairing and Splendor in the Grass, do you think Beatty would've been a better choice (chemistry-wise at least) for the Richard Beymer role in West Side Story or not really? (apparently he auditioned and really wanted it)
2) I think this year's best supporting actress golden globe is going to Scarlett J for Match Point (since they want her babies), or possibly Kirsten D for Elizabethtown (hey, Kate Hudson won). What do you think?
3) I just read the 58-page Brokeback Mountain and was wondering if you'd done the same... I was a bit underwhelmed, but I think it could make a fabulous film if fleshed out properly... wish Gus Van Zant had done it, though.

Non-movie-related:
How old are you (unless that's a touchy topic)? Just curious. It would allow a better ability to delineate the Nathaniel timeline of fandom.

Forgive my intensity/insanity/lots of questions. I'm a college student, it's summer, I'm bored.

Hmm...One question, any question:

I love the lists of your favorite movie actors and actresses. In fact, you (nearly) inspired me to compose my own. But I'm curious: If you hadn't limited your lists to only film, what other actors may have made the cut? Any TV stars? Any un-filmed Broadway talent?

What did you think of Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together?

Oops, I have another question that I've always wanted to ask: What did you think of Shawshank Redemption? I assume you've seen it, but I noticed it wasn't on your top 10 for its year. Did you think it was just OK, then, or did it really rub you the wrong way? It really rubbed me the wrong way, Road to Perdition-style. I think it's the most overrated movie ever.

Aw crap, now, speaking of 1994, what did you think of Forrest Gump? Just OK, or are you a hater? I used to really love when I was younger and now I'm like "eh, it's OK."
OK, I'm done now. Really.

there's gotta be more questions than this...
doesn't have to be about movies either.

1) what's behind the recent line of "surprise" flops (i.e. the island, stealth)? my theory? the new generation of consumer is more pop culture savvy than any that came before. that means they know a top gun retread when they see it. and why go out and pay to see an unorginal rip-off when you own and can quote the original?

2) i believe there are as many different new yorks as there are new yorkers. what is yours?

You once said that Anjelica Huston would win your '91 Lead Actress Award for "The Witches"/"The Grifters" because the Film Bitch Awards date back inside your head.

That got me thinking... I know you're a busy man, and I'm not saying right now, but in the near future, would you possibly consider doing an awards "ceremony" for '99, '98 and and so on? I'd love to see who has won an acting award from you, especially who you would choose for Best Actress of 1995 - Moore or Shue?

six questions -

where did you grow up?
where did you go to school?
are you close to your family?
who's your oldest friend?
how long have you been with "the boyfriend"?
where did you move from, and to, recently?

I'm curious about best actress of '97. We know you hated Hunt, but who did you love?
Hmm... non-film things...
I'm pretty sure you DO like the Golden Girls... so who is your favorite golden girl?
Have you heard the theory that Golden Girls was the model for Sex and the City? It makes a lot of sense.
Did you ever have a serious faux-girlfriend before you were out?
Who did you vote for in the 2000 election, Gore or Nader?
Would you please attend the Sept. 24 anti-war/anti-lies march on Washington? (www.impeachbush.org for details)
What do you do for a living? (i.e. the "real job" to which you often cryptically refer)

Just throwin' stuff out there. Answer at your own discretion, obviously.

How do you know your friend Nick of Nick's Flick Picks?

Hahaha. I think I'm done. I'm totally out of material. Plus, I think I'm scaring Nathaniel.
We've now totally barraged him with questions, but still he remains silent... Wonder why?

I have a late edition for a question: Did you ever had aspirations to ever actually become a part of the film making industry. And if so, what?
