Dreamworks Makes First Big Oscar Move ... For 2006

MCN tells us that Dreamworks has announced that it will pay the licensing fees for any amateur production of Dreamgirls in the calendar year of 2006. So, theoretically at least, they just built a possible huge groundswell for this movie all over the country. High school kids, community colleges, etc... This movie is sounding more and more like the next musical blockbuster on the level of Chicago. [Yeah--no, I don't expect Rent or The Producers to get there]

The Bill Condon (Kinsey, Gods and Monsters) helmed musical already has a website and a release date: December 2006.

Yeah, I see Producers and Rent reaching the $50mil mark that seems to be standard for musicals these days other than Chicago and the indie low-budget ones.

Dreamgirls is gonna be huge. Could we be seeing another black female Oscar winner in the form of an American Idol reject? That'd be a comeback story!

i would love to see a film with a predominantly black cast sweep the oscars. it's ridiculous that halle berry was the first women to win an oscar let alone the last one to be nominated for best actress say what 3 years ago. the black community deserves bigger and better films than soul plane.

After seeing THE PRODUCERS yesterday, I can tell you that it has little prayer of seeing $50 million without an avalanche of studio advertising. Way too old-school, way too over-the-top, way too loud.

I'm still unsure about RENT...it's a mixed bag, but it could still pull out a buzzy cult following.

But more and more, I think DREAMGIRLS is as sure a thing as we've seen in a long time.

Well, i figure that if Phantom of the Opera and Evita, which aren't exactly the most commercial of musicals can get to above $50mil, then surely The Producers, which is quite high-profile can.

But I haven't seen the movie, so i can't really say.
