My Spidey Sense is Tingling

In just one year --May 4th, 2007--Spider-Man 3 arrives. I could not be more excited. As you all know I am cuckoo for Peter Parker. Or at least the screen version of same. I think Spider-Man 2 is the best superhero feature ever made.

I recently checked out the the official site which is being very cagey about the villains. We've seen photos of Thomas Haden Church in the typical striped green Sandman outfit and we know that Topher Grace is playing Eddie Brock (i.e. Venom) which is a real inspired move. Consider that he's a) a terrifically engaging actor and b) he looks enough like Tobey in size and general physical presence to provide a great doubling effect so popular with superheroes and their villains (think Batman & Joker).

But let's be honest. We don't know exactly in what capacity these villains will appear or if they will at all (consider that the man who would be The Lizard made a cameo in the last. So just looking at names, you'd think The Lizard would be a villain in Spider-Man 2 which he was not). We also don't know whether or not or how or in what shape James Franco takes on Goblin duties. It seems likely. The official site lists a full 16 villains as possibilities. They include virtually every famous Spidey foe with the notable exception of The Black Cat. Though I like The Black Cat (and she was rumored to be involved at one point) her absence could only be considered a good decision. She would read far too Catwoman-esque on the big screen: the feline villain who is not really a villain who is in love with the hero. Been there and done that at the movies with you know who so it's, like, untoppable.

Now swing on over to Film Ick to read a lengthy report from the set. There's even video!

I hate that it's an entire year away - I want it now! But, as much as I love the Spidey movies (and I agree with you that Spiderman 2 is the cream o' the superhero crop) I'm really looking forward to Sam Raimi doing something else after this one.

I love Spider-Man 2!

I was a little underwhelmed by Spider-Man, but the sequel was my number 3 in its (very good) year. I also nominated Tobey Maguire (who usually irritates me) for Best Actor and was thisclose to nominating Kirsten Dunst for her one-two punch in this and Eternal Sunshine.

So excited for the third.

I also *heart* Spider-Man 2 and can't wait for the third (yay!). I was actually thinking beforehand that 2 would probably disappoint -- even after seeing X2 greatly improve upon the first in that series -- but boy did I have nothing to worry about. I now can say without a doubt that I have complete faith in Sam Raimi and the team he has assembled. Just wish I could say the same for the folks behind X3 (oh how I worry about that one!).
