don't make her slap your face sissy spacek-style...

That little smirk suggests she may be thinking about short, stocky, bald men.

You know, I’m a bit kinder when it comes to Connelly’s BEAUTIFUL MIND turn then others on this blog… but as the years have gone by I can’t help but notice nothing from Connelly’s work burns nearly as fierce as what Tomei managed to do (with far less screentime) during IN THE BEDROOM:

I refer of course to the “slapping scene” (kiss me dead every time) but also that palpable sense of utter helplessness she conveys with her line reading “I don’t what to do!”

Marisa… you fucking rock.

And after witnessing her brilliance in last years “Devil”, I’m just as- if not more- excited to see her in THE WRESTLER, as I am Rourke.

I agree with Ryan. That year, I was pulling hard for either a Winslet or a Tomei upset over the steam-engine that was Connelly and 'A Beautiful Mind.' The Academy has a habit of rewarding actors I like for performances and films that I hate. By that logic, Kate Winslet will probably finally win her Oscar for some sappy Oscar-bait biopic directed by Lasse Halstrom.

And yes, Tomei rocks. Whether she's being slapped by Sissy Spacek or she's playing Lisa Bonet's white friend (I had to mention that).

Tomei is one on my favourite actresses at the moment, and I watched My Cousin Vinny for the first time last night actually, and LOVED her and it. If I were Jack Palance, I would have read the wrong name too. ;)

Love. Her.

My parents showed me My Cousin Vinny when I was 11 and I wanted to be her so badly.

jofo and catherine -- i hope you've heard her on the podcast. I was alarmed to hear from a frequent reader the other day who had NEVER listened to it. I'm like whaaaa? it's been up for a year ;)

robert --which short stocky bald men is this? does he have gold skin and a sword?

I fell in love with her in Slums of Beverly Hills. She makes anything she is in at least a little bit better, especially Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

I think Robert is referring to her "Seinfeld" episode...

I. Love. Marisa. Tomei.

It started when I was nine years old and I predicted she would win Best Supporting Actress, simply on the basis that I thought My Cousin Vinny was bloody hilarious.

It remains my proudest moment of Oscar prognostication.

Hahaha...I also predicted her way back when. That was an "especionally" good year for me, prognostication-wise -- I nailed the top 6, which is not bad for a 13-year-old. ;-)

Marisa gives her best performance in The Wrestler, I think. Its a nice culmination of all of her talents: dramatic, and comedic; not to mention her sheer nakedness throughout. That's a talent, right?

Anyways, I think it is quite brave of her, at 44, to just now start taking off her clothes in film -- she is a mature, sexy, capable woman, that Marisa Tomei.

I've been a fan of hers since she was on A Different World. It's amazing how she's an acclaimed actress and underrated all at the same time.
