Sound Off December 11

Oscar prediction updates, mini reviews and more are coming but your patience is required. Fatigue, excess work and technical difficulties are overwhelming me. [Despair: Why are podcasts so much more difficult to make available than to actually create? Despite five software programs and six hours of work it's still somehow not ready for your ears. I feel incredibly stupid at the moment but I swear to you without hyperbole that I have rarely done anything on the web more complicated than an iTunes podcast. Even intricate video edits are simpler to understand. I'm missing something for sure. I feel like I never even went to kindergarten and I'm suddenly trying to make it at university.] So I'm stepping away from the computer and watching Avatar for the next three hours.

What's on your mind? It's (almost) the weekend. Any movie plans?

I´m sorry to hear that but now you should enjoy "Avatar".

Maybe I´ll go to see "Antichrist" or "Zombieland" this weekend.

Roger Ebert gives 4 stars to ME AND ORSON WELLES and praises the work of Christian macKay. People feel Mackay is gonna beat Waltz.

I hate to be the negative nancy but I still don't understand why I'm supposed to be more excited for Avatar than I was for say Transformers (which is not at all).

Because James Cameron tells me it's the greatest movie ever? Or because initial reaction seems to be "Action! Effects! Awesome! WHOOOO!"

People are going to be telling me for months, nay years how I just don't appreciate the coolness of it. It'll be Sin City all over again.

I plan to enjoy Disney's return to hand drawn cell animation this weekend, "The Frog Princess." I hear very good things, and it reminds me of a time in childhood when my family and I would wait with baited breath for the next Disney film (I was lucky to grow up during the Disney Renaissance)...I was very sad when that anticipation died so its good to have it back. I also plan to see "The Lovely Bones" as I really enjoyed the book (critics don't seem to like it, but what do they know?)

"Me & Orson Welles" tonight! I will hopefully get to see "Food Inc." by Sunday. I guess maybe I should drag myself to go see "The Blind Side"... you know... so that I can back up my hatred for it.

I'll be seeing Invictus and The Princess and the Frog.

Still waiting for Bad Lieutenant, The Road, and even Bright Star to be released somewhere around here. This is crazy, considering I live in a city of 160,000, not even including the metro area.

Seeing "Invictus" this weekend. I'm seeing "Bad Lieutenant," next Wednesday, followed by a lecture by Werner Herzog. I'm hoping he's as crazy as I've heard.

Just watched "According to Greta" (which opened in Santa Monica, CA) and I was really surprised how much I liked it. It's very well put together (editing, music, animated scene transition sequences) and the cast does well with their roles, especially Hilary Diff, Evan Ross, and Ms. Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn. I hope it does well in it's LA-run so that it can expand to more theaters in the coming weeks. Melissa Leo was ok for her minor role as Duff's absentee mother. Favorite movie quote has got to be:

Lou (Greta's Boss): "You gotta treat customers like what they are."

Greta: "What? Thumbtacks in my ass?"

What interesting sidebar reactions to Avatar and It's Complicated. I look forward to more.

Is Avatar an "A"??? "Yes! Yes! Yes!" is a pretty strong endorsement.

Lots of great films to make a top ten list this year, huh? I feel like you have almost enough A- or above for the whole ten. Can't argue with that.

saw late marriage today. enjoyed it quite a bit. for now, my only question: when you understand neither hebrew nor georgian, can you tell when they're speaking which? (same goes for ajami if you've seen it.)

New reader here - one who quite digs your blog. Keep up the good work!

As for the podcast tech difficulties, I hear that! I posted my first one last weekend, and was stupefied by how tricky it was to post. The good news, is that when you get it figured out the first time, its all downhill from there.

Lookin' forward to hearing it!

...Oh, and I just came in from seeing INVICTUS, which was good, but not Clint's best.

I just watched "Invictus." Oh dear. This movie totally squanders all of its opportunities by focusing far too heavily on rugby for the movie's entire second half. The first half was good, if dry and unambitious, but the second half is a complete trainwreck of sports movie cliches. All of the film's "conflict" seems to be fixed by grunting rugby players and cheering spectators. In short, I was NOT impressed.

I also saw Precious again today. I'm curious about people's thoughts on where best actress is going to lean this year?

Mulligan's win at NBR is a huge push, yes. But I'm wondering if, come March, the Academy will renew their love affair with damaged film heroines named "Claireece."

Sooo excited for Avatar. Have been putting it at the back of my mind to quell myself but after what i've been hearing ahhh! Similarly I'm excited for The Lovely Bones simply for the wildly divisive reactions i've been hearing. Must see what side i'll be on.

Finally caught up on Precious today. Loved it, there was a few too many flourishes like you said Nathaniel in your (though I enjoyed the Italian fantasy quite a bit) but it's soul was so real that I gave in wholehog. Spent a long time thinking about it after. The ending was dynamite and Mo'Nique was devastating while Gabby Sidibe was so natural. Stunning.

Don't understand this buzz surrounding Mariah Carey though. she was good, but not a showy role and was only in 3 scenes so I don't see how she could possibly be pulled into the mix.
